The first parade of this newly organized Volunteer
Company, came off about seven miles below this city
on Friday last, and with full ranks made a very im
posing appearance. The uniform of the officers con*

The sleeves are ornamented with four nitchcd holes
with buttons, and four scheverons on each sleeve.
The collar has two nitched holes on either side
trimmed with gold lace, with gold epaulets and two
brass buttons ou the back of the coat. The punts of
same cloth open in front, with gold stripe one and
a half inches wide. The hat is of black felt, richly
ornamented with gold luce, and three flowing black
ostrich feathers to correspond with the uniform.—
The dress of the privates are similar, except the
trimming, which is black. Altogether it is it most
beautiful uuiform, and can but be admired. Their
weapons consists of a United'Stntes Carbine and sa

Gentlemen of the Congress :
With, sincore deference to the judgment of the

relative to the beautiful wreatn n: Soui!:< rn flowers
which decorated its tep, we omitted to mention the
name of Mrs. David Mayer in connection with tliat
of Mrs. £iras, who assisted in its neat construction.
We were not apprised of our irror at the lime, it is
therefore due to Mrs. Mayer to make this statement,
as we regard it a worthy, noble and patriotic act,
coming as it does from a Southern daughter of her ^ ^ ^
adopted State. We make tins statement volnnUr;- * w )t)
The Constitution (Section 7. Article 1) provides

prevent ihe same ”
The rale herein given is emphatic, and distinctly
directs legislation which shall effectually prevent
the importation of African negroes. The bill before
me denounces as a high mi^ietneanor the importa
tion of negroes, or oiher persons of col-ir, either to
be sold as slaves, or to bo held to service or labor,
affixing heavy or degrading penalties on the act, if

Homespun Pic Nlo.
On Saturday last the young ladies of thi* city,
gave what they termed a ‘-Homespun Pic Nic,” at
the Blue Spring near this city. We were not pres
ent, but learn tliat a great number of the fashion and
beauty of the city were there, and several gentle
men and many of the young ladies dressed in plain
but neat Homespun dresses. This is praiseworthy.
Fashion and extravagance oil tfio part of woman,
once destroyed the government of ltume. It hud
risen to that degree thatordinary. hut good men could - d.n
dot marry, for they had not the means to *'<p;nrt the j !,,Hr
wife’s extravagance. Judging of the fashions • r j
the past few years, we began to feel that tto* once
government of the United States would fall from
the same cause. We therefore applaud the exam
ple set by our young ladies, and trust they will not
abandon it. We also learn that the dance went
merrily on, and every kind of sweet meats furnished
to sail the tastes of all. —
