SODA FOUSTALV.
Wc have reasoiytq congratulate ourselves
and the public during theso dry, hot and
sultry days, that L..E. Welch has establish
ed a Soda Fountain at his Drug Store in this
city, direct from thopolar regions, where on
yesterday all had free access. to its cooling
and invigorating effects. We felt its effects
themorefronitheifact,that on yesterday
no cloud was seen to ohscqre the serene
brightness of the: starry-decked Heavens—
no refreshing breeze passed to'cool the
parched and suMy atmosphero- 'nor to give
life and vigor to animated nature, but the
general “hue and cry” of tho populace seem
ed to establish the feet that it was “very
warm,” tq which each and every one gave
an affirmative ahsfrer. But “tl,e treat” was
’free.” How we are in favorof “free trade,”
and Mr. Welch has set an example which
We hope all will follow. We are decidedly
in favor of free-trade—in ffiot, we are its
friend -we control no narrow sentiments of
hostility to free traffic. It cultivates unity
JN: ween our citizens and the public. It
knits them together by a constant inter
change of kindly offices of interest and af
fection, and cherishes a feeling'of'brother
hood for the whole community. Wp hope
that sincoMr. Welch has openod a'“free”
Fountain for the 2/th day of July, 1800, ho
will coritinuc.tho “Free Business” for tho
balance of the sultry season. Yet, since he
lias beym to considerable expense in -fitting
up t-bis establishment so much needed in our
Community, we belieCe.tlmt a generous pub-
lia will amply remunerate him for his trou
ble and expensive outlay.
P. S.—Frioat Evexixg, 4 o'clock, p. m.

has become bankrupt, and had to sus-
