LOSS
By Portland Fire, July 4th.
The total amount covered by iEtna Policies on
property destroyed or damaged is 92009854$ on
which salvage will be about fi per cent. Our total
loss will not vary much from 8200,000* ai*J is
being promptly adjusted and paid. This sum is fi
per cent, upon the assets, b figure but slightly ex
ceeding our government and State taxes paid last
year, or a proportion equal to a $5000 loss for a
company of $100,000 assets.
The necessity foT insurance and the value of
Wealthy, strong corporations, is forcibly illustrated
by 111 is tire. Several weak Insurance Companies
are destroyed. Portland has a population of85,000;
was handsomely-built, mostly fine brick or stone
struoturesy-proteeted and screened with upwards
of 3000 shade trees—bounded on three sides by wa
ter—indeed, literally, almost rising from the ocean
md wit h a good steam fire department—y at it has
$10*000*000 of property consumed in ft few
hours—upon a holiday when its people are least oc
cupied—from the very insignificant cause of a con
temptible fire cracker.
Remember the trifling origin of fires that sweep
away in a.few honrs the earnings of years. Con
sider your best interests and give the iEtna Agent
a call if you need proper Insurance security. Pol
