rOMMt’NICATEI).
Jan. 14, 1854.
During the present session of the Legislature
the High School of McDonough was incorpo
rated under the name and style of “The McDon
ou,Oi Collegiate Seminary,” and in the act of in
corporation the power to control the liquor traf
fic, and every other vice calculated to corrupt
the morals of the students of the Institution, was
transferred to the commissioners of the town.
On Tuesday last, the citizens met and elected
Messrs. L. T. Dov.vi., Adam G. Sloan, It. M.
Stell, Joseph A. Tuuashkk, ami John Still
well, Esqrs., Commissioners. Tli i character of
these gentlemen is a sufficient guaranty that
the morals of the students will l e sufficiently
guarded, by the enactment of wise, efficient, and
wholesome by-laws and ordinances. If this
should be done no reasonable objection can he
ur<red against our Institution, and that it will
be done is a “ fixed fact.” It would be superflu
ous to say anything in reference to the healthy
location of McDonough. It is free from eontij
geous disease, and no local cause exists to pro
duce sickness of any kind.* In regard t>> the
morals of the place, the hot evidence 1 can give
of superior advantages in this respect, is, that
there are three churches in the town—the Bap
tist numbering about two hundred members, the
Methodist about one hundred, aiid a respectable
number of I‘resbyteriaus. his true, we have
three groceries, and hcin-e, occasionally we have
sonje disturbances resulting from ‘intemperance,
butji the same objection maybe urged against
nearly every city, town an>l village in Georgia.,
But, with the present efficient hoard ol’Cointnis j
sioners, all riotous and immoral conduct will be |
promptly suppressed. The Trustees have seen j
red the services of 8. \V. Hatch, Esq., as presi-j
dent, and a sufficient number-of subordinates, j
all of whom are well qualified to discharge effi
•ciently the respective duties assigned them.—
There is no reason, therefore, why the Institution
located at McDonough should not receive a libe
ral share of public patronage, and I would there
fore, confidently urge upon parents and guardi
ans to give the Institution a fair and impartial
trial. If the teachers should fail to give satis
faction, or if in the opinion of parents or guar
dians, any sufficient cause should exist for remo- :
ving their children or wards to another Institu j
tion they can do so. I would not, as others
have done, say anything calculated to injure!
ether institutions. I am proud to know that
Georgia is awake on this subject, and that schools j
and colleges of a superior order, are springing i
up in many villages, towns, and cities within |
the borders of our noble State, and would be
glad to see a superior school in every district i
from the mountains to the seaboard, but would I
present our claims to the public, and leave those
who have sons and daughters, or\ wards to edu- i
cate, to make their selections, uninfluenced'by j
misrepresentations, or any other ilnploper con-i
federations. I atn aware that strong etforts have!
been made to impress the public mind with the \
•idea that it would he unsafe to send students to

and we have heard these insinuations w ithout j
uttering a word of complaint, having confidence j
in the capacity of parents and guardians to select j
an Institution of learning for themselves, but as i
we know that these statements are unjust, and J
as we are now prepared to offer superior ad van-1
tages tostudeuts, we flsfl it our duty to present
them, and once more ask (lie-public to give us
a fair trial. The exercises of the Institution will
be opened o:i the third Monday instant, and a
catalogue will be prepared in due time. Board
can be obtained in private families at from $8
to $lO per month, including washing and lights.

It is no marvel that there have, been monetary
pressures where there have been such causes for
thein. It is only strange that universal bank
ruptcy has not followed these excessive inipor
tattoos.
The Democratic party professes itself hostile to
the credit system, and would have the world be
lieve that true Democracy consists in keeping out
of debt: and yet its. hostility to the principle of
protection furnishes the strongest possible incen
tive to practical extravagance.
Here are liabilities incurred to the amount of
nearly ninety-four millions of dollars; not to our
own people nor for articles which must of neces
sity be fabricated abroad, but to the artisans of
foreign countries for what, to the extent of at!
least seventy per cent., could with proper effort j
be as well produced here as. elsewhere.
This may all be consistent with Democracy ;!
but it is not consistent with the kind of De-1
raoefaev whictTcoranioft sense inculcates, andj
which has for its basis a patriotic desire to pro- ]
mote the.permanent prosperity of the American
people.
If overwhelming disaster lias not followed in the
wake of this species of American . Democracy to
promote foreign interests, it is only because our
resources arc even more prolific than the folly of
our rulers; or rather perhaps because the exces
sive importations induced by the commercial
policy of the party in power, by creating a for
eign indebtedness, stimulates the issue of domes
tic stocks, which, by being received at low rates
abroad, have postponed the final adjustment of
accounts. But pay-day must come; and, when
itdoescomo the lesson will be fearfully impress
ed upon the public mind that the “nodebtr No
mocracy of the day is by its anti-protective poli
cy the great debt-instigator of the nineteenth cen
tury. A .. ,
It may be wise to send a hundred millions of
dollars a year to England, France and Germany
M pay for broadcloths, calicoes, silks, and linens,
when we hare the material and skill within oar
own tefriwirinl limit# -to provide all these com
moditjes of dtoselvm, blit we arc too dull to
OOtMprchcnd it. Nor do we believe that Ameri
ca will ever acquire the power and greatness at- j
tain able until American industry receives the f >s-,
tering care of an American Congress, or until the j
American people teach American statesmen that,
home labor has a claim upon all who prefer home
to foreign interests.— Albany Journal. \
