particulars of a horrible affair, which recently oc- i

paralleled in atrocity among the aehievetnonts of j
modern times by the exploit of Marshal St. Ar- j

death thousands of his harlmrinn opponent* who
had sought refuge in u deep and spacious eave :
“In the ease at the Cape of Good Hope, the Caf

the stone, however, rendered this scheme impraC j
tlc ihle. and he then stationed his men around the i
mouths of th caves, and built up walls in font
of them. After a few days, many of the women
and children were driven by hunger and thirst
from the hiding places, and were allowed to es
cape : but everv man who came forth was shot
dead by their rifles. On the 17th of November,
at the close of u siege of three weeks, the besieg

the silense within together with the horbble
odor arising from the hodios of the dead, told how
effectually their object had been accomplished.—
More than nine hundred C"ffre< had been shot
down at the mouths off the caverns, and a much
