, The War with the Sioux.
Ijetters have been received in this city from
Fort Laramie as late as the 10th September.—
They contain some news of interest, and alto
ther present the condition of things in that
quarter as of a belligerent character.
Captain A. P. Ilowie, 4th artillery, was about
tried by a military court, of which Col.
liotihian was President, charged with disobedi
ence to orders, in having failed, at tho battle
of Blue Water to go down the hill after being
dismounted to fight on foot, whereby Col. Cooke
was deprived of the services orttis company dur
ing the tight. _
Gen. Harney arrived at Fort Laramie on the
j7th. The Sioux Indians, it is said, have com
menced war in earnest. They attacked a small
party of three men, from Laramie, a few days af
ter the battle of Blue Water. They run off the
Government herd from that post, a few days
since, and succeeded in getting thirty animab.—
Johnson was sent after them, but bad to give up
the pursuit after going some ten miles, his horses
(broken down ponies) having giyen out. The
greater part of the animals stolen by the Sioux
were afterwards recovered
The same Indians, attacked some express men,
from Fort Pierre. They saved themselves and
their mail bags, being on fleet horses, but they
lost all the led horses.
Again, says the letter, the Sioux Indians last
night stole eight mules from some people enroiite
to the States, encamped near this fort. The bail
is now opened and we may have, and doubtless
will have, work ahead. The Indians says “come
o n.” They are on White Earth, in large num
bers, and have sent messages to Gen. Harney to
come on with young men, that they are readyand
want his horses, tlia t he had better not come
further into their country, or he would cry.”
Wharton is at Fort Grattan, at Ash liollow,
but goes to Fort Kearney. “Tin* r!uw's for
a tight are good, but in my opinion the Indians
will run.”
Two forts arc to be established between Lara
mie and Fort Pierre.
“Col. Cook deserves great credit f.ir his admir
able decision and <jiiickuess in the battle of Blue
Water. — It is feared the command will lose all
the dragoon horses t is winter, they are now
poor, she ponies are... uning admirably, and
stand this country well. (Apt. hoveii has return

An “American” Trocession broken up and
Dispersed by a Band of Irishmen !
The “Voung Amerieans” had a mass. meeting
last evening, at the junction of the Bowery ami
| Third Av. niic. After addresses from Gen. Lloyd
I and Col. May and other speakers, a torchlight
procession was formed.
When the procession was turning the corner of
Ist avenue and 13th street, it was suddenly attack
ed in the most brutal manner by a numerous gang
ol Irishmen, who had evidently bceen lying in wait
for the purpose. A volley of stones and brickbats
was sent into the ranks, —many of the lights were
wrenched from the hands of the torchbcarer.*. and
extinguished.—while every transparency on which
the ruffians could lay their hands, was summarily
destroyed.
The American flag was taken from tho proeo?si n
and trailed in tho dirt.—but it was subsequently
re-taken by a party of the Voung Men's Ameri
can Club.
Knives and pistols were brandished by the attack
ing party, and a number of persons were badly
beaten iu the melee. Tho Irish came upon the
Americans suddenly, filling tlie__ojj-
and hisses intermingl'd with curses for the Know
Nothings.
The scene, for a while, was one of the great, *1
consternation, and for a moment it was feared
that the scenes recently exhibit and in the streets of
Louisville were to be re-enacted here.
The forbearance and self restraint of the citi
zens in tho procession. however, alone sav 1 the
city from that calamity,— but nothing was left un
tried, on the part of their ferocious oppioiu ntu to
provoke tho eatastrophy.
The Irish succeeded in what is thought to have
been their object in making the attack mi:v
JiKoci: up and nispiVKsr.n tiie i'uuci.-o-iun. They
