Ir.'inlfiil Hail Storm. * .
One of the most terrible, liail-storins that has ev
er been witnessed ‘n this section of the country,
passed over the Southern portion of Meehlenburg,
on the ltlth inst. It extended througJi the neigii
horlsrfvls of Ftee) Crock. Sharon, I’KAidencc, etc.,
andwenvenot inf lined how muelk^Aurther. —
T*o cowls arose, one in the east, the the
southwest, rolling and curling in frightful shapes
until they met, a little to the south Cliarlotlb? the
wind giving the rain and hail-stones a wlWrling
motion. NYe k-arn that many of the stones mea
sured eight incites m.cimnnlerencc, and in some
plates covered the ground to the depth of several
indies. The storm made a clean sweep of grow
ing crops along its patli, literally stripping the cot
ton stalks and heating into the earth com, wheat,
oats, syrUp cane, &t\, and pealing the hark from
fruit trees; in fact, destroying at one fell swoop
tlie hopes of farmers of the current year. It ises
perinlly distressing to the poorer class of persons,
*vlio were almost entirely dejiemlent upon their lib
lie crops for a living, a successstul re-planting being
very doubthil, unless we have a very good season
*ml a late trill.
N\c trust that not many arc in this condition. —
The feelings of one gentleman found a relief in
tears as lie described to us the destruction of bis
crap and his prospects. But the same hand that
guides the storm, feeds the young eagles upon the
rlefls of the rock, bread to the raven*

P. 8 -W> arc informed by a private letter from
Clark’s Creek, Cutawbn county, that the same
*tnrin visited that section. It swept away every
thing in its track—cotton, corn, wheat, oats and
orchard a—stripping the forests, shattering window
jlass, penetrating the roots of houses and leaving
destruction in its train, We hear of its ravages as
far down as Cheraw, 8. C. —Charlotte (A’. C’.) Ik-

Written on hearing a lady complaining deeply on
account of the death of a favorite Mocking Bird.
Nay. hut thy bird yet lives, and even now,
Perchance, has found thy little ones aliove,
And lightly swinging on some spirit bough,
Pours gently torth his timid song of love.
Happy thought, that < rrn in a little hint, •
There is one bright spark which can never die;
That better strains from his mellow throat are heard,
And brighter .wings are given him to tlv.
Who dares to say, though thy bird lias left thee,
fold is his *Tnn and h islied his loving strain.
That this spark of lon will never be set free.
That he xvill'never sing for you again?
i Surely, God does not build but to destroy,
No! when lie kills it is to />'i i ify —
To take the yowl no lot from the base allov, j
And thus it is tlllil we have to die,

A lawyer in his office sat,
One sweet lovely spring morning bright,
A thinking over this and that.
What might turn up ere dusky night.
Not long to wait—a sound lie heard—
Quirk as thought to the door he flew.
Unconscious whether man or bird.*
It was a lady all in blue.
Good morning, lawyer, how do you do?
As quick as thought, the lawyer replied,
1 am glad to see it is you—
Please to he seated oil that side.
The lady from her pocket drew
A written paper, very old,
Whose color was of ancient hue—
Begged liis pardon if too bold.
The lawyer, anxious lor a fee.
Looked sharp at his client fair —•
Forgot his usual courtesy,
> — Dropped by her side itMiis chair.
tsuid paper old from her lie took.
With can* perused it through and through.
With a sage and savaunish look.
Exclaiming, a fee for me—a fortune for you.
News like this, the lady in blue,
Took all the lawyer said for true.
Feeling lich as a merchant jew,
1 let parse upon the table threw
The fee now paid, the suit began-
Court after Coart—year after year,
Continuances on the docket ran,
Still, the law yer said, the right was clear.

\\ inai patience could endure no more.
Tin lauv in blue, now in black,
Had grow n old and wretchedly poor,
Without a home or cloak on her back?
To end it all, the lawyer said.
The right w as clear, but the proof was not.
Another Court found his client dead —
The in xt, the ease dismissed, and all forgot.
