The Journal i Messenger of yesterday dropped in at the ap> pointed time. Routes —A corrected Military Directory will be found elsewhere in tho Era. This ii corrected from a Roster, for which w$ are in debted to General Terry’s Headquarters. Christian Chapel.—The walls of the new Christian Chapel are completed, and the roof will soon be up. The chapel will be ready for service early in the Full. Patnr’s Chapel, (M. E.) is progressing wel eoou be reAdy for use. and will be n great con venience to people iu the North end of the city. BAPTISM.—The ceremony of Baptism was performed upon a number of ponton* at the Third Baptist Church yesterday. These were part of the fruits of a recent revival in that new Church. Impbovehent.— St Philip’s Church, which has heretofore been lighted by kerosene, is about to be lighted by gas. A collection vas taken up on Sunday to procure the necessary Allures. MraicAi. —Peters' Musical Monthly for Au gust has come to hand with its usual quantity of characteristic matter. It is emphatically a parlor magazine of music and musioal intelli gence—one of the most superb published in ibe country. Amther Good Boildino.- -Mr. K. M. Clarke is putting up a fine new building on Broad Street, adjoining that of W. B. Lowe A Co. The building will be two stories high. The upper part of it will be fitted np for a boarding bouse. BctLDtwoe.—Tbe number of building* new In preoeasof erection iu this city approximates three hundred sod fitly. It probably does not exceed that many. The buildings gener ally are of a good class. Some of them are the best ever erected in Atlanta. B. C. Robson —Among the many railroad agents in the oity there is nono more affable, polite and efficient than B. C. Robson, agent of the well known Green Line. Ho is an in veterate worker—can always be found when needed, and is always ready to lend bis aid tor the accommodation of the people. The Mails.—Three issues of the Knoxville Whig, aud the sume number of the Press A Herald, reached us in a boucb yesterday. Cer tainly tbero is a screw loose somewhere on this route, or these papers should not have so lagged behind. Other mails over the same route reached us in due time. PsanoiAL.—Mr. B. W. Wreun, Genera, Ticket Agent on the Western A Atlantic Rail road, is one of the officers against whom is heard no complaint. He is a »oung mau, full of bosioens activity, aud perfectly alive to the interest which he represents. The depart ment of the road which is under bis manage ment is not likely to suffer from neglect. Cool.—Since Saturday the weather has bean remarkably cool. It really seems os if Autumn were about to rob Summer of one of her month*, and appropriate it to her own uses. It. we are inclined to think, is the re sult of lunacy on the part of the weather— that in, the moon U shotting off a part of th6 hunt to which the earth is entitled. Punas Contention.—It seems determined «h«t * Convention of the Press of Georgia will bs held in this city on the 23d of August Al most if not all the papers—daily, tri-weekly and weekly—in the State will be represented. We hope arrangements will be made to show these gentlemen every possible courtesy, aud that they will be made comfortable while in the city. We beg them all to consider the hospitalities of the Era office fully extended. The “latch-string is ou the outside," aud wo will be glad to weloome every one. Sherirv s Hales. —We oall special attention to the Sheriffs sales for September, advertised in this issue of the Era. A large number of the levies sr« for lost yean*' taxes, Slate and County, and it become* the people to look afUr these things io order to save thuir prop erty from sals. The Hboriff will sell unless the executions are satisfied before tbe day of aula. Hboriff Hubbard is bringiug tbe people to “taw” as fast as the law requires. It ia perfectly useless to attempt to dodge him. What the law requires be will execute without fear or favor. He is a good officer, and one who will certainly discharge his doty. Fin Cotton —Wo were shown yesterday, by Dr. H. J. Holmes, two stalks of California soil on, which are certainly the Quest wo ever •a#. The seed was planted io April. Jtuonrrm Tool Limn. - Parties remit ting mossy to the Era offieu, either for sub- •oripttoiifl or other boainofla, have ohoioe of thiew methods by which it oen be sent at our risk; by registered letter, by money order, or by Express. One of the three ia aooeesi- ble to every one, henoe, there U no neoeasity tor having a dollar lost. Tbe irregularity in the mails is ao great at present that it is not mfe to trust a money letter through the ordi nary fihanntlf We reoelved a letter from Lexington, yesterday, in wbioh we were in formed that over a month ago a subscriber remitted money to us, but it never reached us. Similar letters reach us frequently.and of eoureu there ia no means of hunting the lost letters up. But this oeu all be avoided by the methods suggested above. It ooets but a small fee to register a letter or purohase a money order, and we are willing to take the risk whansvsr mousy is seut in either way.— We hope our friends will all make a note of this, and save themselves and us trouble in the future. Oil versus Gap—We have seen an ingen ious lamp, consuming Petro oil, by which it is suggested the use or ga* for street lights can be supplanted, saving to the oity an ex pense of ono dollar a mouth upon each lamp. The parties controlling the invention propose to put up two hundred lamps at their own ex- peuao--furnishing the lamps and the posts- to keep the asms in order lor fivo years, to do all the filling, lighting and extinguishing du ring that length of time, and theu turn them all over to tbe oity, without further pay than three dollars a month for each lamp In use. — We have soon the lamp while burning, and are satisfied that one of them will give more light than two of oar present street lamps, with the quality of gas furnished by the At lanta Gas Light Company. The light oan be seen any night in front ot John T. Hagan's store, on Whitehall street. It would be well for the City Counoil to investigate this matter thoroughly. It will thou be seen whether the Atlanta Gas Light Company i* a permanent monopoly or not MONETARY iHB COMMERCIAL. ATLANTA MARKETS. Ovnoa Daily Saw (u, •atoXa, Ivactra.
