Their discordant elements were uuit«d. not by simi larity of principle, but by hatred of the domi nant party and of the government. They were like weak bands of Indians, who, although unfriendly to each other, unite to overcome a convoy too strong for a single tribe to attack, aud when their object is gain ed, and the common foe defeated, fight eaoli other for the spoils. If the so-called Democracy had bevu tri umphant. its discordant elements would have quarreled among themselves the moment their triumph was assured. As time rolls on and “distance lends en chantment to tbo view,” the side issues of the time will be forgotteu, and soon to have been opposed to tbe prosecution of tbe war will, iu ibt- minds of the people, be an unpardonable crime. Every year that passes adds lustre to tbe war, boaor to those who fought in it, and opprobrium to those who opposed it. The truth of the above is already visible. The Democracy ia already repudiated by the Northern people. It can never regain its lout ground, but on the contrary each year will add to its weakness, until from a faction it will bo nothing.
