of some Afrioan chief, at that he has twnsd

from the wife of the well-known traveler,
Captain Barton, and which is supposed to re
flect the latter's views, expresses a belief that
Dr. Livingstone is a prisoner at the town of
Luoenda or Lands, the capital of the King of
Oaxembe.
The chief of that ooantry is a monarch of
considerable note and power, living in a land
far removed from the intereourae of trade
Houthward and Northward; and if Dr. Liv
ingstone were violently detained at Leoendo,
it would be natural that no tidings from him
should oome by way of tho Nile, or of Zani-
bar. Mrs. Burton draws attention to the fact
that the Arabs of Muscat have great influence
in the Cozembe district, and that the Doctor
has never been popular with the Moslem, for

Mrs. Burton inclines, therefore, to believe
that the Arabs, dreading probably an inter
ruption of their slavo trade, have caused him
to be kept at Oaxembe.

My daughter has been afflicted with akin dii
