Of pica or National Watch Go., 1
159 & 101, Lakb Street, V
Chicago, Oct 12, 1869. )
Messrs. Lawshe <fc Haynes, Atlanta, Oa.:
Your letter of October Ctb, to Mr. P. 8.
Bartlett, General Traveling Agent of this Com-
pauy, wherein you mention that certain state*
monts have been made in your city, detrimen
tal to the character of the Elgin Watches, for
Finish aud Durability, has been referred to me,
and I desire to note briefly in reply as follows:
First, as regards the finish of oar movements.
Upon this point your own opinion, with the
published testimonials of the most practical
and experienced watch-makers in the country,
and the medals aud diplomas that have been
awarded to them for “perfect construction
end fine finish ” at eight difi'erc/U State Fairs,
iibin the .past two years, should be concla
ve to your customers. Second, as regards
Durability. The only possible criticism upon
this point Is “that the watches have been but
a short time in market, and although without
doubt they could not have gained the reputa
tion they have, without being more than ordi-
narily correct time keepers, and of handsome
aopeArauce, it cannot be known whether they
will last"
lu reply to this, 1 have to say: First—That
the watches sold by us two and a half years
ago aio iu ns good condition to-day, where
they have hod proper usage, as upon the day
ol their purchase Second—That the use of
machinery in the construction of our move-
Rents, nnd that of a superior kind, enables
ns to use u harder metal for piuions and
when Is t^an can be found in other watches
not constructed in|n .similar manner, and se
cures K'ss friction in the watch train by the
greater exactness and uniformity of machine
ov. r hand labor, and wo know, and every
biecliiiiiic knows, that watches made upon our
American principle are superior to, and will
outlast twice ever all others.
Third -To settle this point definitely, you
re uuthiHis *d to nay to your customers that
r any watch bearing our trade-mark shall,
ith proper usage, within ten years from
ate of purchase, wear out, so us to become
Helens to the owner, wo will give u now
lovcmeut of the same grade therefor.
Hoping this will unit all objections and
enable yon to ndd to the large Halts you Lave
already made of Elgiu Watches, I am yours
truly, T. M. Avery.
