Messrs. Lawshe A Haynes, Atlanta, Ga.:
Your letter ol October 6tb, to Mr. P. S.
Bartlett, General Traveling Agent of this Com
pany, whoreiu you montion that certain state
ments have been made in yoar city, detrimen
tal to the oliaraoter of the Elgin Watohes, for
Finish and Durability, has besn referred to me,
and I desire to note briefly in reply as follows:
First, as regards the finish of oar movements.
Upon this point your own opinion, with the
published testimonials of the most practical
and experienced watch-makers in the country,
and the medala and diplomas that have been
awarded to them for “perfect construction
and fine finish ” at eight different State Fairs,
within the past two year#, should be ooncle-
sivo to yonr customers. Second, os regards
Durability. The only possible criticism upon
this point is “that tho watches havo been but
short time in market, and although without
doubt they oonld not have gained the reputa
tion they have, without being more than ordi*
narily correct time keepers, and of handsome
appearance, it cannot be hnom whether they
will last.”
In reply (o this, I have to aay: First—That
tbs watch'** sold by ns two and a half years
ago arc iu as good oouditiou to-day, where
they have had proper usage, ns upon th# day
their purchane Second—That the use of
machinery In the construction of oar move
ments, and that of a superior kind, enables

■r hand labor, aud we know, and every
clmnio kuow*. that watchos made upon our
American principle aro superior to, aud will
outlast twice over all other#.
third- -To settle this poiut definitely, yot
tlinrixed to say to yonr customers that
watch twuriug our trade-mark shall,
ith proper usage, within ten years from
to of |Htrchase, wear on', so as to becoma
Iuhm to the owucr, wo will give a new
