Ball think yon hors wholly -though un-
wilUogly I admit—misapprehended the poai- 0
lion of the friends of Mr. Chief 4 ustloe Chase, 0
when you Mem to nnsnme that he will not he ,
a candidate. That Oov. Hoffroau pousesMs t
some adraaHagea, 1 freely acknowledge. He is
a young and rising politician. Lie stay justly {
lay claim to Mew York, to begin with. This, i
I admit* in an important point in his favor on 2
the score of aTtilibUily. I am also femsible
of the laet that Mr. Obese has, by his long t
ideotifloatiun with the public servioe, lost, to f
aoms extant, his hold upon any particular local - 1
tty. He may not practically claim Ohio as his j
reeidsnee. He ieaoitisen of U«« United HUtea. ,.
Hence mere total politicians do not fuel that f
iutereat in his nomination that they otherwise J
Would* ]
Nevertheless, when viewed in its proper l
light, this circumstance should be in his favor, a
lie belongs to no one State or looality, bat to 1
tne whole eoontry. Ho represents, not a |
State or section, but the nation in Us entirety. |
And that he is tho first choioe of tha piugreo- <
sive Democrats of the whole eoontry, no man 1
who has carefully studied the signs of Ui<>
times can reasonably doubt. I have every ,
reason, therefore, to believe that, so far from 1
having retired from the field, he is more
prominent before the Democracy of the u*-
lion to-day, than st any time iu tho past; rnd*
that he will be in the field in 72, I have no
sort of donbt In fact, I have every reason to
iufer, from the statementa of his most inti
mate frieuds, that he will be a candidate.
You therefore wholly misapprehend the
purpose of his friends, as well as tbs feelings
of the Chief Justice himself, when you Inti
mate that he has retired from tho coutest, and
that he is “satisfied with his present exalted
position." It is true, Mr. Chase never has
been disposed to enter mere politioal scram
bles before nomimating conventions. Such
proceedings do not accord with his well known
conceptions of propriety. But that be would
accept the nomination if tendered him, no
mao who knows him doubts; and that he is to
day ih* strongest and most available man up
on whom the Democracy of the nation conld
unite, is, I believe, generally admitted. Mind
you, I say the Democracy would have to unite
upon him—not bis blends upon it. He Is not
in the market as a trading politician. He
would never oonsent to shape his political
views to suit a conventional platform. He is
a platform in himself, and the Democracy will
find it to their interest to go to him; he will
not go to iL
Knowing, therefore, your exalted private
opinion of Mr. Chase, and your unwillingness
to knowingly do him or his friends injustice,
I have thought proper to drop you this hastily
written paragraph. I am emboldened to do
this all the more by reason of your firm adhe
sion to the fortunes of President Grant; and
feel assured that you will not, under the oir-,
cumstauces, deny this correction a place in
your columns. Hence, I select what I eon-
cieve to be the ablest Grant paper in theSonth
as a medium through which to oorrect false
impressions respecting the future plans of the
Iriends of Mr. Chase. Faib Plat.
