How to Head off Dueling.
When tbe capital shot Burlingame desig
nated the long range rifle in responso to a
duel challenge, and the six footed Potter, of
Winconsiu, chose bowie knives, the bellig
erent Brooks and the fiery Pryor suddenly
became very averse to the practice of dueling,
whatever they might have thought concern
ing the theory. The barbarous custom re
ceived a check, only second to that which
followed from Hamilton’s death st the hands
of Bnrr. Two Frenoh women have now
fnrnished a key for tbe total doing away of
this practice. Annon B., and Jeauuetou It.,
two Parisian matrons, quarreled over a sum
of money a few days since. Instead of
yielding to thejost now prevalent mania for
small swords a* a means of adjusting
differences, they vigorously pel ted each
other with eggs until seconds interfered and
pronounced the oonteet a drawn battle. If
gentlemen now-a-days subject to challenges,
would act on the above suggestion, there
would soon be an end to affairs of honor.

Richmond, December 8.—In the Bo..rl of
Trade Convention, Monroe, of Dubuque, had
the floor on the unfinished bustose* of
yesterday, being a resolution for a double
track railway from tbe oenter of the ohief
source of grain and produoe iu the West to
the Atlantic seaboard. He showed that a
double track road 1,200 miles long, with
trains starting every five minutes, having
3,000 trains on the track with 64,000 oars in
constant motion three hundred and sixty-five
days in the year, would have a capacity of only
fifteen and three quarter million tons
each way, while tbe Virginia water line, with
boats of two* hundred and eighty tons, and
double deck, and used only three hundred
days in the year would have a capacity of
over sixteen million ton« each way.
The whole subject was then laid on the
table by a vote of IX) to 13.
A resolution was offered by Mr. Begley, of
Detroit, nrging upon Congress the necessity
of the construction of a ship canal around
Niagara Falls, connecting Lakes Erie and On
tario, and appointing a oommittea to memori
alise Congress on the subject. He explained
that Congress was not asked to giv* any aid
to the work. *
The resolution was advocated by Bagley,
of Detroit, Dore, of Ohioago, Hal tan, of Wis
consin, Opdyke, of New York and others.—
They urged it aa not only a sectional bat a
national neoeaoity. The whole chipping of
the West, which might be noeded as a navy
by the Government sotpe day, is locked up
whore it oan never reach the ocean. The cost
was variously estimated aa ranging from six
to twelve millions, is nothing compared with
the vital necessity for it*
