POETRY
BATTI-EFI'AGS.
BY GBOBOE COOPER.
Beet them proudly homo igtin 1
Veterans of the gory plain !
Bulky naw, with rent and stain,
Once so fur.
Bands and hearts hare brarer grown,
Where these glory-folds have shone,
When the wings of Death alone
Swept the air I
Faded stars the story teH
Of the noble ones who fell,
While the shrieking of the shell
Froze the blood.
Of the onset and the fight,
And the silent.march by night,
, When we stormed the rebel height
Like a flash 1
Precious every shred they bear,
Furl the battle-flags with«care,
You who in their glory shave,
Ballet scarred.
Grateful hearts in pride receive,
This, the heritage you give,
Through the years your fame shall live
Here enstarred 1

Somebedy’s Boys.
Somebody’s sou was out last night,
Braising about the town ;
And. if I mistake net, he was tight—
‘ Tight as a Derby clown.”
I know he’s considered a moral youth,
Above suspicion!—bat that
Is no reason, to tell the troth,
He hadn’t “a brick in his hat.”
Daylight morality often takes
Strange lancies into its head.
And “plays the d—,” or “jumps up snakes*
When the public eye is in bed.
“Jfy son can’t dance,” somebody said,
“For never a lesson took he—” .
But he dancod last night when you were in bed,
And Twilight was there to see.
You may call it dancing, or not as you feel,
Though for half an hour or more,
He danced or “jigged” a “tangle-foot reel,”
In front of my office door.
«Mg Bon can’t sing,” somebody swears,
But he sung last night, I know,
As rough a song as a demon dares
To sing in the regions below.
“A/V son don’t imbibe,” somebody thinks,
Well, maybe he don’t—but then,
That bk acts very much like one who drinks,
Can be proved by a hundred men.
Yet something was tight—y«s, di unk—last
night,
Bo drunk it could hardly crawl—
Perhaps 'twas the brim of a crownless hat,
That I found by my garden wall.
Bo, for fear lam wrong and somebody’s right,
My hasty words I recall,
And say that the thing I saw last nigh t
Was nobody's son—that’s all !
A Week’s Work.
Sunday—church doors enter in,
Rest from toil repent of sin ;
Strive a heavenly rest to win.
Monday— to your calling go,
Serve the Lord, lot e friend and foe;
To the tempter answer no.
Tuesday—do what good you can,
Live in peace with uod and man ;
Remember life is but a span.
Wednesday—give away and earn j
Teach some truth, some good things learn ;
Joyful good or ill return.
Thursday—build your house upon
Christ, the mighty corner-stone,
Whom God helps, his work is done.
Friday—for the truth be strong,
Own your fault if in the wrong ;
Put a bridle ou your tongue.
Saturday—thank God and sing,
Tribute to his treasure bring ;
Be prepared for Terror’s king !

[From the Harrisburg (Pa.) Telegraph.]
A Prediction Verified.
I860, when Jeff. Davis was threatening destine
tion to the North as the result of secession, he,
one day, in an animated conversation with Gen
Simon Cameron, exclaimed: “When the Sooth
secedes, each paralysis will fall upon Northern
enterprise that the grass will grow in the streets
of your Northern cities !” The retort was instant;
the General replied : “Air. Davi>, if the Southern
States secede, utter ruin will fall on your section.
Yonr slaves will be liberated, and will assist in
your destruction. The North will not be rained,
bat I will, with my own hands, plant corn in the
' streets ef Charleston, the cradle of treason. True
to his promise, in the spring of this year, when
General CameTon visited the South, he did plant
corn, hired a soldier to attend to it, and has just
received a crop, with the following note from
Major General Hatch, commanding our forces in
harleston:
Charleston, S. C., July 21, 1865,
Hon Simon Cameron—Dear Sir I ship »o«
day, by Adams' Express, four ears of corn, the
produot of the grain planted by yonrstlf, in the
•aily part of April.
It is poor corn at the best, probably owing to
the soil. It.received every care from the gar
dener at the hospital, whose same is given below.
Very respectfully, your ob’t serv’t,
John P. Hatch,
Brevet Major General.
David Fitz Gibbon, gardener, Orphan’s Asylnm,
Charleston.
We have been presented by the General with
an ear of the oo'rn, which we will be glad to ex
hibit to onr visitors.
Items.
The turpentine crop in North Carolina will
be small this season.
The blood-bound brigade to be used against
the Minnesota Indians cost $65.
Books, pen, ink and paper are now allowed
to Jeff. Davis.
They were dying at the rate of 1,500 a day
of cholera in Constantinople last month.
The cigar steamer, it is asserted, will be
worked by steam, not smoke as has been sop-
posed. .
Punch says the cigar steamer is a remarka
ble sea “weed.”
Housekeeper’s situation wanted by a young
lady. Marriage a preliminary requisite.
Teresa’s new song in Paris is called “The
Venus in Carrots."
A Goon Match foe Somebody.—Marriage
able young ladies should read and ponder upon
the following : A young man in Aroostock
county. Maine, advertising for a wife, speaks
of himself as follows : “I am eighteen years
old, , have a good set of teeth, and belike in
Andy Johnson, the star-spangled banner and
th® 4th of ■. July. I have taken up a State lot,
cleared up eighteen acres last year, and seeded
ten of it down. My buckwheat looks fine, and
the oats and potatoes are bully. I have got
nine sheep, a two year old ball and two heifers,
beside* a house and barn. I want to get mar
ried. I want to buy bread and batter, hoop-
skirts and waterfalls for some person of the fe
male persuasion during life. That’s what’s
the matter with me. But I don’t know how to
do it.
Effects of a Pafee Cuerbhcy.—Specula
tion is everywhere raising its head, and must
continue so long as paper money increases.—
Good family flour U now retailed at $13 per
barrel, coal at $H per ton, and almost all the
necessaries of life in about the same propor
tion. This great advance over prices oi $5
and $6 for flour, and $4 and $5 per ton for
coal, is almost entirely attributable to currency
very greatly cheapened in value by the increase
of its amount. Three dollars of paper is now
worth some two dollars in coin; but this'is not
the wont of a redundant currency. The more'
there is of it the greater is the facility afforded
capital in combining to put up prices, leading
to strikes and combinations in resistance on
the pan of ewwWwre.'v-jPWWs^Ald Ledger.
