SAVAIWAH NATIONAL REPUBLICANS jjFRIDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 3. 1865
POETRY
[For the Savannah National Republican.]
LOVE ME.
BTjHniA ADDIS1UB.
Twine aroand my heart thy chain,
Let me feel for e’er thy power—
From Love’s dream I’ll ne'er refrain,
Though it blossoms but an hour.
Give me but that heart's caress.
Link thy soul to mine, ray love ;
And thy raem'ry I will biers,
Thro’ this life and world above.
Let rac blissful dream away
All the cares my heart hath known :
Let Love’s bright and sunny ray
Chase each sorrow I have borne.
Let me, let me dream once more,
That I have.thea at my side;
If thine eyes their love light pour,
Care I not what may betide.
Link thy soul With mine, my love,
Though it be bnt for to-night;
My fond heart shall never rove,
If my love you once requite.
Give, oh ! give to me the power
To awake a throb of bliss ;
For in payment of that hour
I pledge all my happiness.
Let me bear each pain Of thine.
Ail the pangs of parting too ;
If I only call thee mine,
That sweet thought repays adieu.
Give, oh! give me but thy heart,
Should it rove from mine away ;
With Love’s sweet and fondest art
I will chain you as you stray.
If yon only love me now,
That is all I ask of thee ;
Fondly I will keep the vow,
lifting still thou lovest me.
Love and trust me, that I ask,
Never let a doubt arise—
Mine will ever be the task!
To prove the love that in me lies.
If thou lovest half as well
yts the love I bear to thee,
Then I know a constant spell
Will enchain thy soul to me.
Cast o’er me thy spirit’s love—
Link thy heart and soul to mine ;
I will ever constant prove,
Thro’ the fleeting years of time.
THE PEACE ACTUJIN.
BT JOHN G. WHITTIER.
Thank God for rest, where none molest,
And none can make afraid,
For Peace that sits as Plenty’s guest,
iieueath the homestead shade 1
Bring pike and gun, the sword's red scourge,
The negro’s broken chains,
A ud beat them at the blacksmith’s forge
To ploughshares tor our plains.
Alike henceforth our hills of snow,
And vales where cotton flowers ;
A !1 streams t!(it flow, ail winds that blow.
Are Freedom’s motive powers.
Henceforth to Labor’s chivalry
Be knightly honors paid;
For nobler than the sword shall be
The sickle’s accolade.
Build up an altar to the Lord,
O grateful hearts of ours 1
And shape it of the greenest sward
That ever drank the showers.
Lay all the bloom of gardens there.
And there the orchard fruits ;
Bring golden strain from sun and air,
From earth Tier goodly roots.
There let our banners droop and flow,
The stars uprise and fall ;
Our roll of martyrs, sad and slow.
Let sighing breezes call.
Their names let hands of horn and tan
And rough-shod feet applaud,
Who died to make the slave a man,
s nd link witU toil reward.
There let the common heart keep time
To such an anthem snng,
As never swelled on poet’s rhyme,
Or thrilled on singer’s tongue.
on" of o r burden and relief,
Of peace and long annoy;
The passion of our mighty grief
And onr exceeding joy.
A song of praise to Him who tilled
The harvests sown in tears,
Aud gave each field a double yield
To feed our battle years!
A song of faith that trusts the end
To match the good begun,
Nor doubts the power of Love to blend
The hearts of men as one.
Horse Car Salad.
[From the Portland Transcript.]
Never full! pack ’em in 1
Move up, fat man, squeeze in thin.
Trunks, valises, boxes, bundles,
Fill up gaps as on she tumbles.

Thirty seated, forty standing,
A dozen more on either landing.
Old man lifts the signal finger,

He’s jerked aboard by sleeve or shoulder,
Shoved inside to sweat and moulder.
Toes are trod on, hats 8re smashed,
Dresses soiled—hoop«skirts crashed.
Thieves are busy, bent on plunder,
Still we rattle on like thunder.
Paoked together, unwashed bodies,
Bathed in fumes of whisky toddies,
Tobacco, garlic, cheese and beer,
Perfnmo and heated atmosphere,
Old boots, pipes, leather and tan,

Homicide.—Mr. John H. King, Agent of the
South Carolina Railroad, at Hamburg, was shot
by a United States colored soldier about 9 o’clock
Saturday night,on the corner of Centre and Mar
ket sirsets in Hamburg.
The weapon used was a long horseman’s pis
tol, the ball from which entered the right breast,
passed through the lungs and produced death in'
a few hours.
From wi at we have learned, the deed was as
unprovoked as it was cruel and bloody. Mr.
K.ng was talking with a few friends on the
street, when four colored soldiers came up to
where they were standing and some few words
passed on Whieh ,he soldiers
H i®". Thls Party met another colored
soldier and a woman, to whom they remarked
that they came very near having a
scrape, to which this soldier replied that he cou"d
shoot as quick as any one else, or something of
he same effect, and proceeded in company with
the woman to where Mr. King and h P is
were conversing. Some ren-arb , a
made, the fellow immediately approached^??
King and fired the shotT whichTnfrrEnatel*
proved so fatal. So close did he approach the
former that the powder was flashed in h; s f ace
The woman, together with some three or four
colored soldiers, have been arrested, but it is not
ascertained as yet whether the guilty party is in
custody. The case is one which requires a speedv
'nvestigation.
The whole affair is a very melancholy one, and
we record it with much regret. •
Mr. King leaves a mother, a brother and three
or tour sisters, who were dependent upon him, to
