THURSDAY MORNING, NOV. »th.
Cotton Purchased by the State of
Georgia.
We publish in our issue this morning the
documents relating to the purchase of cotton
by the State of Georgia, and the assets of the
State held abroad, lately submitted to the Con
vention by the Provisional Governor of the
State. We have had the article on hand for
several days, but have been compelled to defer
its publication in consequence of the pressure
of other important matters on our columns.—
Deeming the article of considerable interest to
the people of the State, we give it to our read
ers this morning to tae exclusion of much oth
or interesting matter prepared for this issue.

The production of this spectacle, last
evening, was a decided dramatic triumph,
.it which the indefatigable, managers
may well feel proud. We have not suf
ficient space to do justice to the perform
ance, but shall refer to it at greater
length in our next issue. We advise all
to attend the theatre this evening and en
joy a genuine dramatic feast. The spec
tacle is produced in magnificent style,
abounds in beautiful tableauxs rich
scenery, while the musical portion of the
eutertainmant is worthy of praise.
Great expense and pains have been be
stowed upon this spectacular piece, and we
hope the liberal public will respond to
t he efforts of the company to produce a
first class novelty.

Arrival of the America..
It gives us great pleasure to record the
safe arrival of the substantial and com
modious steamship America, of the fa.
mous Star Line. The America reached
her wharf at a few minutes past eleven
o'clock yesterday forenoon, bringing
quite a large list of passengers and a very
heavy cargo of assorted merchandize.—
The America, during her temporary with
drawal from the line for the purpose of
perfecting important repairs and adding
valuable improvements to her machinery,
has been thoroughly overhauled, and is
now one of the finest boats plying be
tween this port and New York.
Our citizens will be glad to
learn that though great alterations
have taken place in the mechanism
and interior arrangements of the Ameri
ca, no change has been made in her of
ficers. Capt. Lindt, and Purser Robert
H. Owen, both continue to fill their re
spective positions with as much credit
and suavity as of yore. In recommend
ing the officers off the boat to the travel
ling £ommuuity as gentlemen in every
sense of the word, who are not only com
petent to discharge the duties of the of
fices devolving upon them, but are al
.ways willing to be courteous and accom
modating, we offer no disparagement to
the gentlemanly officers of the various
other steamers plying between Savannah
and the port of New Yo rk.
Distinguished Arriva 1 .
The world’s profouudest philosopher,
most sagacious stateman, the immortal
and transcendentally eloquent “J. N„”
we are gratified to learn, is paying our
city a brief visit, and is temporarily so
journing at the Pulaski House. “J. N.”
comes among us a martyr to the cause of
truth, but not as a stranger in a strange
land; he possesses a world wide reputa
tion, the acknowledged superior of
Aristotle and Plato, in logical pro
fundity; surpassing i n metaphy
sical acuteness the immortal Locke and
Jlaoan, and iafiaitsly aupsviw i« politic^
when people
view it from his standpoint, there will be
a spontaneous and general reconciliation
to his unanswerable and profound theory.
Should the pressure to-day be too great,
he will positively martyr himself in the
darkest dungeon of our city prison.
This relieves everybody, and makes “J.
N. ” the mark of envy and jealously, which
he knows must surely exist respecting
truths which differ from the established
ideas of the age.
We predict for the heroic “J. N.” the
earnest attention of a vast assemblage
this day, in order that he may be fully
understood before his departure from
our city. Let all who desire to see the
veil of ^prejudice majestically removed,
and superstition banished, rally to-day,
and hear the sublime orator discourse,
enlighten, thrill, amuse and convert his
hearers.

Europe.
By lbe arrival of the ateainer Java yesterday,
we have tews from Europe to 22d October. At
that date Earl Russell had accepted the office of
Prime Minister of the British Cabinet, vacant by
the death of Lord Palmerston, and had under
taken to reconstruct the ministry. The opioion
prevails that in consequence of Russell’s great
unpopularity with all classes his Cabinet cannot
be of any stability, and that Gladstone is expect
ed to be the coming roan. The English papers
report that the Cholers is stationary in Paris.
France and America.
In a correspondence between Mr. Seward, of
the United States, and the French Minister, tne
former stated ihat he apprehended extreme meas

tfce French Government send any more troops to
Mexico, and expressed a hope for the preserva

that more French troops would not.be sent there.

In the early part of the week a large business
was done at advancing rates, but towards the
close the tendency was downwaid and lower
prices were taken. In Sea Island an excessive
business had been effected at fall prices, and
American was in demand, particularlv for export
and speculation, and was offered at a decline of

the isme proportions. Egyptian wag also active

hand was estimated at 280,370 bales, of which 37,-

In Manchester the business was almost en
tirely suspended and everything looking heavy.
Any thing that was done in cotton was in favor
of the buyer, and no improvement in cloth and
very little in yarns.
Cotton in India.
We have advices from Calcutta and Bom
bay to the Oth of October. Cotton was then
in active demand and prices advancing at Bom
bay, bat in Calcutta there was but little busi
ness doing aud holders were firm to the rates
demanded. In Bombay Dhollerah cotton was
sold at 4.15 on the 4th, and on the 6th, the
currency rose to 4.60, at which the demand was
active. Cotton goods and yams were advan
cing in price both at Bombay and Calcutta.
Cholera iu New York.
The steamship Atlanta, from London, arrived

mortal. The vessel was ordered into quaran

In a work just issued from the press by Gen.

surface, which is calculated to shake the nervous
system of the inhabitants of the most fashionable
and opulent parts of this city. He warns the au

premises by data which bear the impress ot

We have intelligence directly from the steam

This information is litter than that given in our

for any other reason the examination should take
place immediately, they ■cumtnnnioate with the
Health Officer, when he may make the usual in
spection.
Yesterday aiternoon Dr. Swinburne, contrary
to his customs, visited New York in order to re
main lor the nigh’, leaving word with the
Deputy Health Officer, Dr. Burdett, that he would
be at the lesideoce of Dr. Sayres, the resident
physician.
The Captain of the Atalanta Calls for Help.
Cant. Pinkham, of the Atalanta, made a
signal, by burning a rocket, after bis res e. came
to anchor, to indicate his desire his vessel
should be boatded at once; but the s goal Was
not ofi-erved ; and early in the evening Ur. Bur
den left the quarantine office, and went to bia
residence.
At a >ater hour the captain despatched a mes
seuger on shore with ths statement that cbolei a
was among his passengers, that the physician
who bad charge of them hid exhausted bis
strength, aud asking tor bntp immediately. The
deputy health officer went on board. He was
; met by the surgecn of the Atalanta, a German,
remained above for more than two hours, tra-j w ho explained the facts, and gave an account of
joyment of the rich treat promised by the big
•how bills. Many a wise and sedate-looking in
dividual wbo would scorn to acknowledge that
he could derive amusement from the fanny
antics of the clown or the daring feats of the
ring, have surreptitiously resolved to invest a
dollar a*d see the Jm*.
A large coucaurWjf people were assembled
on Ci^tdnl Green on Saturday, to see the free
exhibition. Signor Ferdinand, though he mist
ed bis tip at firs', did wond’rs at last; and
vhilsttfbtue people were suspicious that he did
not fly, many were eqaally astonished at
hi* not breaking his neck. The afternoon
inside 'show was no go—everybody was
waitiag for the night, and, sure enoogb,
at night the house was filled to its utmost ca
pacity. The pavilion is new and handsomely
decorated, the seats well arranged, and the
performances excellent, Balloons are jumped
through, horses are ridden in all sorts of ways,
nun twist themselves up, spin barrels and balls
with their feet, leap, turn somersaults, stand
on each other's heads, and do alt the things
that circus people are expected to do—bot
what is more to the point, they do them well.
Thrire are two funny mules, a smart horse, and
some wonderfully sagacious and well-trained
dogs—they can do whatever is possible to be
done by mules, horses or dogs. The clowns
are funny, the riding good, the feats of agility
not to be surpassed ; and, in short, the circus
is a success.
tne manner in which be had treated the passen
gers. About one-halt ot the whole number at
tacked with the disease died.
The Passengers.
The passengers of the Atalanta, numbering
five hundred and titly-two, were principally
Germans, excepting the cabin passengers, of
whi.m there wtre forty-eight. The vessel had
taken nearly all the latter on board at London,
and part ot the sletrsge passengers; hut she
slopped at Havre, vyhe e more psssengere were
received.
The Infection—Number of" Deaths.
The p rsuns who brought the cholera on board
came irom Havre. On the first day after the Ala-
Luta went to sea, one of them, a child, was at
tacked, aod died ou the following day. Others
became sick immedta.elj, but the disease was
confined entirely to the steerage. None of the
cabin passengers wire in the least d-gree affected
i by it. The cases of sickness numbered, as is re-
j ported elsewhere, from fifty to s.xty, and there
■ were fifteen deaths.
Conduct of the Passengers.
The steerage passengers on the Atalanta did
not know, it is sa-d, till they arrived at this port
that the disease that was amoog them was cboL
era. Some of the most intelligent among them
surpected the fact, but the physician carefully
withheld positive information from them fearing
the rff'ect of excitement among them, it is
thought that this accounts for the fact that only
fifteen of the five hundred persons wbo were ex
posed to the disease died ot it.
Th- passengers manifested very little anxietT;
they did not seem to be much alarmed even
after they learned the nature of the epidemic
from which they were soft-ring. -
Music and Mirth.
The cabin passengers, who became aware
versing space at an altitude occasionally of j
more than tw o miles, taking a deviation across j
the North river over Jersey City and returning, j
making a tour across the East river, and thence j
back again, descending on the spot from which |
the travelers started.
Fires and Accidents.
Several fires have occurred during the week, j
attended with considerable loss of property. In j
one of those calamities which took place in j
Heaver street t«’o fire c ngincs were overturned
on their passage to the scene and rendered un
fit for service there, and one of the firemen had

On motion by counsel, Wm. Murphy sued
for a dissolution of partnership with his wife
on the grounds that she, holding the check
book on the bank, drew on the money that was j
lodged there to the credit of the partners. He !
being lord and master, would not recognize j
Mrs. Sarah Murphy, his wife, as the governing j
parly in the partnership and alone entitled and j
possessing the exclusive power of drawing his j
money out of the bank whenever she thought
proper, and to any amount and for whatever
purpose she pleased. lie indignantly denied
her power and authority in the premises, and
prayed for a dissolution of the partnership, or a
mandamus to restrain ill; d f. ndant, his-wife,
from drawing his money out of t'to bank.
Mrs. Murphy, in defence, repudiated in toto
the authority or in'erference of the plaintiff in
the premises. She <1 niid his right to open his
lips on the subject, inasmuch as the money in
bank to which her husband refened was all her revj early iu the voyage that cholera was on

without any apparent regard to consequences.
Some of the steeragers passengers decided

Crime and l’hrenzy.

Ilis wife, a very interesting and ladylike young
woman, with an infant in arms, appeared to
supplicate the clemency of Ins accusers, but in
vain—they would not be conciliated or ap

Whereupon, and finding all entreaty to be vain,
the wretched young creature Hew ont of the
court and in the hall swallowed a large qnantity
of laudanum, and returning speedily into the
court, she threw the empty vial on the floor,
saying, in loud accents, “ 1 have done it; take
care of my child.” The devoted and afflicted
woman was conveyed to a private room in the
court house, where remedies were applied and
successfully. She is on the recovery, but in a

Nightingale was despatched to her relief. -The

, Cotton.
On Wednesday the transactions of the day
were a little more active toward and at> /the
close, aud prices a shade higher (ban on the
dty before. Middling sold freely at 56ao7.—
On Tborsday the general tone of the market
was languid, and purchases were not to any
large extent. The chief article in demand
was the finest quality, but it appeared there
was not much of that on baud. The market
however may be quoted a shade higher, but

The Atalanta Ordered to the Lower Bay.
Dr. Burdett endeavored to communicate
with the health officer, but could hear only
from Dr. .Sayres.
This forenoon the dsputy health officer or
dered the Atalanta to the Lower Bay, where
she now lies, at a point about fifteen miles dis
tant from this city.
The Hospital Ship.
The hospital ship, known os the Florence
Nigli ingale, but the real name of which is the
Falcon, was withdrawn from her station in the
Lower Bay on the I9th day of October, and
laid up” at Red Hook, foot of Yan Brunt
street, Brooklyn, for the winter.
The reason for this was that it wag snpposed
there would be no farther use for her.
She has been ordered to her old station, and
the patients will be removed to her and treated
on board.
TyOtcr.
Still later intelligence is from Dr. Walzer,
who has charge of the patients on the Atalanta
as an assistant health officer.
The number of deaths up to 3 o’clock this
afternoon was nineteen.
The number of cases on hoard at that time
was more than pventy.
