The Steamer Savannah.
Tun steamer Sheppard, Capt. Bliss, arrived
yesterday from the steamer Savannah, lately
mink oil the Savannah river, about fifty miles
above this city, on her passage to Augusta. The
Sheppard brought down a quantity of freight
taken from the wreck, and Capt. Spicer, of the
Savannah, is now engaged with a large force of
hands in discharging the balance of her cargo.
It is thought in about a week the entire cargo
will be taken out, and that the steamer will
again be afloat. The whole cargo was, as a mat-
tri of course, greatly damaged and we regret
to state that there was little or no insurance on
it
It is thought that the steamer is not materially
damaged, aDd that her injuries will be speedily
repaired.
From the known energy of her agent, Mr. My-
rell and Capt. Spider, we are in hopes of beiog
soon able to announce that she has again been
placed on the route to Augusta.
The Gale an the Coast
We team from Mr. George M. Knowlton, mas*
ter of the sehr. Chattanooga, Capt 0. D. Black,
twelve days from Boston, and which arrived here
yesterday, that while at anchor outside of Tybee
Bar on Sunday last, waiting for an opportunity
to enter the harbor, a heavy gale sprang np,
which compelled them to slip their port chain,
and in a short time after to let the other go -in
order to prevent the schooner from going ashore
on the North Breaker. The wind was blowing
fresh from the Northeast, and a heavy sea run
ning at the time—the weather being thiek
and the rain falling in torrents. The schooner
weathered out the gale and arrived here yester
day. She is consigned to Messrs Riohardson A
Barnard.
The weather on the coast, for some days past,
has been very thick, with strong winds fr om the
Northeast. Nearly every vessel ' arriving has
met with some disaster in lose of sails, Ac.

Justice of the Peace.
An election was held yesterday for a Justice
of the Peace for the Second District, City of
Savannah, to fill the vacancy occasioned by
the death of the late G. E. Bevans, Esq.—
There were polled 114 votes. Levi S. Part,
Esq., received an unanimous vote, there being
no opposition.
Personal.
Major H. J. Nims, Paymaster, U. S. A.,
who has been some time in this Department,
has been ordered to California, and left on
Saturday last, on a special steamer, for Hilton
Head, whence he will sail for New York in a
few days.

10 o’clock, a. m.

Marine Disaster.
We learn from the agents, Messrs. West, Bryan
A U'.)„ that the steamer Fannie Lehr, Capt-
hewis. which left this city on Saturday afternoon
W, for Augusta, was snagged at Gum Tree
Snag, about 3 o’clock.on Sunday afternoon. She
va-, however, immediately backed ofi by Capt.
Lew s, and run ashore on the opposite bank of
tbe river, where she sow lies. The water comes
into the steamer pretty freely, but they are en
abled, by the constant use of her steam-pumps,
lo keep it down. The Minnie Brandt will be dis
patched to her this morning at 8 o’clock, for the
purpose of conveying her passengers and freight
to Augusta, None of the freight is injured, and
the damage to th8 Fannie Lehr is supposed to
be but slight.

A first class grocery establishment has just
been opened at the corner of Abercorn street.
The proprietors, E. H. VanNess A Co., have
spared no expense nor trouble in fitting out this
establishment and stocking it with an enormous
supply of first class produce, by which the citi
zens of Savannah can be supplied with tbe very-
best descriptions of groceries on the lowest
firms. Steamers and sailing vessels can also be
tally supplied, and ship-owners who shall make
a trial ot this establishment as well as private
families, shall never have reason to regret their
dealings with D. H. VanNess A Co.

Tkc Weather.
The lemarkably warm weather which we
bare experienced for several days past^ took
a sudden change yesterday. From an early
hour in the morning a cold, drizzling rain fell,
uonhnuinj; throughout tbe day, and while we
w nte it is still drip, drip, dripping. Our streets
*re in A miserable plight, and nothing but mud
ft eets the eye at erery turn. On Sunday persons
on the streets were hunting the shady spots and
biding themselves from “Old Sol’s” rays, but on
FiWty they might have been seen hugging
hie chimney corners. Overcoats and fires were
by no means uncomfortable. These sndden
Uusnges are severely felt by our people, but more
so by those who have been accustomed to tbe
steady but severe eold of the Northern cities, and
colds and coughs are a natural consequence.

Liverpool, Novi—About6 o’clock yesterday morn T
g schr Rover, of the Isle of Man, during a squall
drifted down and athwart the bows of the Culloden, for
Portland, Me, (both at anchor in the Sloyne), driving
the fluke of her anchor, hanging over her bows, into
the sehoone's bows, and staving in those of the Cul
loden, and the schooner went down immediately, her
crew leaping on the Culloden. The C had put back to
the Mersey from her intended voyage, being so leaky,
having enconnte ed- heavy weather, and the extra
water gaining in the hold through the hole in tbe bow s
was too much for her buoyancy, and she in turn showed
unmistakable signs of sinking. ; ignais were made to
her Majesty’s ship Donegal find the steamer Woude -,
and the boats on the former were immediately launch
ed, and the latter ran alongside the sinking ship.—
Though almost level with the water, nine ofthe < ullo-
derns ciew persisted in going into the forecastle for
their clothes, and while there the ship gave a lurch and
went down, taking the unfo tunate men with her.—
Capt Hutchinson, ofthe Culloden, was, we are inform
ed, on shore at the time of the collision.
