POETRY-
[For the Savannah National Republican.]
nEHORY.
BY HINA ADDISINK.
Memoi) • what a changing dream thou art,
So full of smiles and bitter tears;
Embodjing some new feature in each heart—
Some dream, some bliss of former years;
Each mindjddth paint thee different as thou Comes t
to them—
Each soul dwells on thy form with joy or with
dismay;
Anon thy shadow darkens all, or like a shining
gem,
Beaming Hope attends thee, or Despair engulfs
_ . thy way
At nines as'ioue as a maiden sick with lore,
Tliou sitiest sad and fondly dream
O’er pleasures lost, and loved ones flown above—
Kissing flowers cull’d in happier scene,
Thy melancholy spirit bending ’neath the weight
of woe,
Too deep, too eloquently sad for relieving tears
Faded like the fragrant blossoms gathered long
ago,
Thy form is stricken as though bow’d by age
and years; *'*
And thou claspest to thy heart some trinket
fond—
Some likeness thick with gems and gold—
Pondering o’er Words ’wakened by thy wand,
From lips long crumbling with the mould.
Memory 1 sweet gift of earth—crowning young
love with delight—
How changing^art thou, yielding unto some
fond hearts
All that their longing souls desire of hopes so
pure and bright;
Anon, traitor to the true devotee of thy arts,
Whose heart has, in its wild worship,
Made thee a shrine whereon is placed
The purest off’ring of his impassion’d soul,
Deeming thou could’st his gloom efface.
Alas ! to him thou turnest coldly, and he weeps
sad tears
As he views the strange changes thou doth e’er
unroll,
Yet, worshipping, he clings to thee as the last
fond lint
That tells him of a happier though a distant
time.
And even when fast chilling on life’s warm
brink
He casts a last gift on thy shrine,
And but in.death he breaks thy mighty link,
(E’en then believing thee divine.)
Oli, Memory I thou fickle maid, what dost thou
want with me ?
I love thee not, I have no pleasure in thy form,
Nor hare 1 ought but sear and worthless gifts
to offer thee,
Culled from the bitter fruits within my heart’s
grey urn.
Avaunt thee 1 I will not yield unto thy sway,
Full well I know thy tricks and wiles—
The faded garlands and hopes of life’s dark way,
Forgetfulness alone beguiles.
Then leave, oh, leave me—it is not for thee I pine
and sigh;
I thirst, but it-is for the cold drink of Lethe’s
stream,
And I gladly pass thy maddening thoughts and
pictures by,
While in obiivion I end thy haunting dream.

FlMiHIAL AND COMMERCIAL.
Cincinnati markets.
Cincinnati, Nov. 10.
The provision market during the week past
has been unsettled and prices hare fluctuated
considerably. The holders of old stock, in order
to clear their houses for new operations, forced
prices down till a demand sprang up. at the re
duced figures, and with the light stock on hand
prices improved.
Mess Pork—During the week declined to $30.
but Tallied again with some sale at $32 in small
lots. The market closes quiet at $31 for choice
City, though it is generally held a shade higher,
New Jless is offered at $32 50.
Prim* Mess—Is dull and unchanged.
Romps—Exhausted.
Bulk Meats—Old are in light demand and
supply, and are nominally held at 15 and 17%
loose for shoulders and sides.
Bacon—Has advanced, and is also in light sup
ply. I quote the closing asking prices at 17,19,
and 21% to 22c for shoulders, sides and clear
sides, packed.
Hogs— 1 The receipts have continued light, and
those on the spot have been readily taken at
from $11 to 11 50 gross for good to first class, or
33 50 to $14 nett, while sales for the future are
difficult to make at these prices, or even at a
shade lower. Packers are generally holding ofl,
with a view of lower prices, or, when matters
are more settled so that they may see their way
more clearly, to pay current market prices, even
though they be higher, while feeders prefer to
hoid back, and feed their cheap corn and take
their chances of the future.
Grbkn Meats—Have been in fair demand all
the week, closing at 12,15, and 17% a for shoul
ders, sides and hams; new bulk shoulders fifteen
days in salt 15% to 15% packed.
I.ard—Has declined somewhat this week, and
closes quiet at 25c. for whole bog in new tea, and
27c. for kettle rendered and in kegs 27 and 29c.
There is as yet no quantity of head or gut lard
being made; the price talked of is 24 to 24%c.
Whisky—Firm at 2.30 for new and 232 for
old.
Exports—Of the week were tes Lard, 645
kegs do, 964 bhds Bulk and Bacon, 145 tes 1521
bits pork, 60 Boxes, and 40000 lbs.
Freights—Have again advanced to $1 05 100
<.5c and 90c per 100 IbB, all .rail to Boston. New
i ork, 1 hiladolphia and Baltimore or 5c less
rail and water.
Montgomery market.
Montgomery, Ala., Not. 18.
Cotton—The market exhibited an improved
feeling yesterday; there was more disposition to
buy, more offers tendered. A half dozen loads
were all we noticed upon the streets. Prices re
mained about as on Thursday. The receipts for
the past week have been quite light, and not
many bales have changed hands.
Columbus Cotton Market
_ Columbus, Not. 18.
Cotton—Middling cotton was sold yesterday at
89a4o cents. There were quite a number of cot
ton wagon* on our streets, bnt the staple was
drooping.
New If ork Gold Market.
«, *• New Yonx, Not. 17.
The gold market was steady, the opening and
colsing price being 147, and the only deviation
% downward
Foreign exchange was firm, but not active.
Bankers’ bills at sixty days were quoted at 108%
a 109, short sight 109% a 110%. The transac
tions in the former were generally at 108 7-8. '
The deposits in exchange for certificates at the
Sub-Treasury to day amounted to $644,000-
making a total of about $1,700,000 since the books
opened on Wednesday.
