SAVANNAH NATIONAL REPUBLICAN, FRIDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 24. 1865.
Business on the Wharvey.
For the $a*t three month* the business of
our city, especially that immediately connected
with the shipping, has increased to an extent
which is truly surprising. The large number
of steamships and steamers arriving here daily
has fiiied oar warehouse* with quantities of
goods of all kinds, and the wharves are ac
tually blocked np with goods for storage. It
is with considerable difficulty that the vehicles
for carrying off the luggage of ,the numerous
passengers from the steamers can manage to
“6teer” tbrongh those valuable cargoes now
lying upon the wharves. Daily the bustle,
and we might call it confusion, is on the in
crease with the accumulating business. Our
stores are filled with buyers, and greenbacks
are plenty. If Savannah only continues im
proving at the present rate, time will make
her—what her natural position greatly favors—
one of the most prosperous cities in the South
ern States. . * - ■

At an adjourned meeting of the City Council
at Savannah, held on Wednesday evening last,
quite a number of important matters were
acted on—among them a voluminous report
bum the Finance Committee in relation to the
rice turned over to the city authorities by Gen.
>h-imitn, for distribution to the citizens.
The Gas Committee were empowered to
, : ve all the gas lamps in the city put in order
: immediately and lighted.
Tite Sanitary and Police arrangements of
‘ tae city received due consideration.

Forestalling the Market.
tVe are glad to see that the matter of forestall-
p- mg the market, which has been practiced for
pome time, is attracting the attention of our au-
|tti rides. We have on several occasions called
latteution to this subject, but without much ef-
f'feet. Our worthy Mayor, however, has taken the
matter in hand, and all who violate the ordinance
id regard to this matter may calculate on meet-
ng with stern justice at his hands. Living is
high enough in all conscience, and every effort
should be made to lighten the burden from our
sow impoverished community. We have heard
t: several arrivals of chickens from the surroun-
cuig country being bought up by hucksters and
speculators for 75 cents per pair, who place them
'Dike market and demand $1.50 to $2 per pair.
This extortion should be stopped immediately.
Marine Intelligence.
The U. S. steamer Nansemond, Captain
t Colesbnry, which arrived at this port on
I Wednesday from a cruise, reports much dis-
| t.-e<s among the shipping along the coast, and
I mong the Florida Keys. She fell in with
q he brig Mary E. Thompson, of Searsport,
>: lom Galveston, bound to Boston, about 40
U -ides to the eastward of Key West. The M.
,1 h Thompson was without a navigator, the
J- raptainfliaving died the day before, and was
I. turned about an hour before she was boarded.
I Tieut. Gabrielson was placed on board the
S? Mary K. Thompson, with instructions to take
H tor to Tybee for the purpose of being sup-
| piled with a captain. We have been informed
| that the brig has not yet arrived, and that the
WDuunccment of her arrival at this port yes-
er day was premature.
