The voices are tender, .
And the whisper* ar* t«««i
'itmt natnre’* fond molhtr*
Softly breathe* nnte yott;
But why should yon deem
My friend false and light ?
Hi* heart may be given
To fancies more bright.
Another may win him;
But I care not for aught
But a sweet sister’* claim
In his fond, loring heart.
Then do not deny
To me that sweet name—
Trne, I will deem him
Forever the same.
Ton may think he it false
To hi* fond ‘ ‘sister May,"
But never, no, never,
Will I think he’ll betray
Affection like mine—
So gentle and calm—
Pure and nnselflsb,
Yet tenderly warm.
Then think not that natnre
Doe* not speak to my heart:
I lore all I loved,
And no joy will depart,
Except what I glean
In deeming him mine—
My brother so fond,
So gentle and kind.
Daisy.
the children.
When the lessons and tasks are all ended,
And the school for the day is dismissed,
The little ones gather around me
To bid me “good night” and be kissed-
Oh 1 the little white arms that encircle
My neck in their tender embrace;
Oh! the smiles that are halos of heaven.
Shedding sunshine of love in my face.
And when they are gone, I sit dreaming
Of my childhood too lovely to last—
Of joy that my heart will remember
While it wakes to the pulse of the past;
Ere the world and its wickedness made me
A partner of sorrow and sin,
When the glory of God was about me,
And the glory of gladness within.
I ask not a life fox the dear ones,
All radiant, as others have done ;
But that life may have just enough shadow
To temper the glare of the sun ;
I would pray God to guard them from evil,
But my prayer would bound back on my
self ;
Ah 1 a seraph may pray for a sinner,
But a sinner mtut pray for himself.
I shall leave the old house in the autumn,
To traverse its threshold no more;
Ah ! how I shall sigh for the dear ones
That meet me each morn at the door ;
I shall miss the “good nights” and the kisses,
And the gush of their innocent glee;
The group on the green, and the flowers
That are brought every morning to me.
LOST IN THE DARK.
Come back ! come back I for tbo light went
out
When your eyes looked away from my own!
Grieved and wearyl wandered about
In the ctfld and dark alone!
Trying to find my way to your side—
Come, darling, and take my hand!
Once I drew it away in my pride
From the tenderest one in the land 1
Come back ! come back ! with the Spring’s
sweet prime
With the birds from over the sea!
For I turn my face from the golden time,
And my ear from its minstrelsy!
For my passionate soul cries .out for the day
When your heart fell away from mine—
Cries out for the cup that pushed away,
Spilling its costly wine!
Come 1 and your kiss shall kindle again
The passion-bloom on my cheek! *
Come 1 and read in my eyes the pain
That my lips are too proud to speak I
Come 1 for I lie in the cold without,
Stabbed with agony wild,
All for yon—and my heart cries out
Like a poor little motherless child!

CovTOJf—The receipts ot eotton since the 26th
Hovember, have been as follows, vii: 8,980 bales
of Upland, 909 do Sea Island, and U bales of
Domssiies. The exports during the eame period
have been 7,912 bales of Upland, 117 bales of See
Island, and 124 bales of Domestics—leaving a
stock on hand and on shipboard not cleared of
2,134 bales of Upland, 987 bales of Ssa Island |
and 350 bales of Domesties.
At the close of onr last weekly report, holders
wars firm, and the sales effected were at the full
rate of our {notations, when we quoted Middlings
at 47X*iSe. This state of tbs market eontinnsd
for some days, and holders were firm in their
asking rates, bnt on Wednesday European ac.-
oounta were received by telegrams announcing a
decline in the Liverpool market. This news in-
duoed holders to relax their firmness, and sub
mit to a decline of from 1 to ltfo on the previous
rates. Sisoe thit time this decline has been es.
tablished and Middlings will now only command
47s. Holders, however, contiaoe sanguine, and
the msjer part of them do not feel disposed to
aeeept the offering price- of purchasers. There
ia s very limited stock on sale, and the only lota
offered are in small quantities. During the
week several English buyers havs appeared on
the streets, but the qualities they require and the
supply is not enfieieni to fill their ordera. All
good lists are eagerly taken, at the following
rates, dnly paid:
Ordinary .Nominal.
Low Middling 44 a— e
Middling 47 a—e.
Strict Middling 48 a —c.
Good Middling 60 a—c.
Ssa Islaxds—There is very little done in this
article, in consequence of the limited stock
placed on sale. The finer grsd.es are mostly in
request, but the greater part of the receipts are
ot a very inferior quality. In the unsettled state
of the market, it is only necessary to give ex
tremes, which are from 75 to $1 25 per lb, while
most of the transactions are at $1al 10. Nearly
all of the receipts are badly prepared and of in
ferior etaplo. *

Stock on hand
1, 1895... ...
Bacoe.—Thera has been bnt little ehange in
the market daring the past week. The market
is still well supplied with all deacriptiona, and
bnt a moderate demaad. la view of the large
stock en hand, however, eellers “have been dis
posed to redoes their asking rates a trifle, and
oar figures will give a lair index of the market,
viz : Prime Sides, 22a28a; Shoulder*, 20a31c;
Hams, 25a68c per pocad. Piekled Meats are in
moderate request at our last quotations, via:
Family Pig Pork, $16*20 per half bbl;*Family
Beef, $17al8 per half bbl.
Bag*iss—The demand fer Bagging noticed in
our last, has rather slackened this week, but
prists remain unchanged, and we therefore re
new those given in tur last weekly report, viz
Gunny, 25a60c; Sea Island, 32a88c; Cooper A
Co’s, 46c. The latter article is selling in a retail
way for 45c.
Bcttzb—The market continues to be well sup
plied with Western Batter, and sellers have been
compelled to submit to a reduction for the me
dium qualities in order to effect sales. A prime
article, however, will command our outside figure.
For Prime New York Goshen there has been
rather an active inquiry daring the week, and
holders have advanced their rates. The stock on
sale is,fair. We qaote Western, 45a50; Prime
Goshen, 55a60e per lb.
Cabbaobs.—The constant arrivals from the
North keep the market abundantly supplied with
this article, and while oqr highest figure ere paid
for a prime quality, an inferior artiele can scarce-
ly be given away. We give as the ruling rates,
$5 to 10 per 100, as in quality,
Coas—The arrivals from Baltimore keep the
market well supplied in corn, and the demand is
only moderate at lormer quotations of $1 15al 20
for Maryland White, and $1 SOal 85 for Prime
Western.
Coffbb—The Ooffee market during the past
week has been without change, there being bnt
little demand for shipment to the interior. A
good sapply is in the hands of dealers, bnt they
ere not disposed to lower their former rates, viz:
Java, 40a48e; St. Domingo, 84a; Rio, S4a86e por
pound.
Cidbr—A considerable qaantity ot Cider hae
reached our market daring the week, for which
-there has been a fair demand. The article ie held
at$2Sa80per bbl for Champagne, of good quali
ty, and for Newark Cider, in quarter barrels, 915
al6 is demanded. ,
Floeh—The market continues supplied with an
abnndant stock of all kinds of floor, with only a
moderate inquiry from buyers. Family Ohio ia
quoted at $10 25al0 50 per bbl; Family, 911 25a
1150; "New State” New York, $10 50all per bbl.
The lower grades, for which there ie bat little
demand, are quoted at $9a9 50 per bbl.
Hat—The active demand for Hay the past
week, and-the limited stock on sale, has caused a
slight advance on the artiele. Holders are firm
in their rates, and are asking $110 from store.
It is sold by retail at $1 SOal 40 per 106 lbs.
Lbxohs—But few Lemons are now On the mar
ket, whieh readily command $12al4 p$r box We
notice also some very fair looking Florida Lemons
on the market, but w* believe they are inferior
iu quality, and are In hot little request,
Lab»—The market remains in pretty much
the eame eondition as noticed in oor last, and
prices remain abont the same. We continue to
quote as before, viz: Leaf, prime, 80a83c per lb;
pressed, 27a29c per lb.
Line—There is bnt a little lime on onr market
at present. A small lot ot Rockland hae been
received, whioh is held at $4 per bbl. Slacked
Lime ia worth $2 per bbl.
Molasses—Nothing new has transpired in this
artiele during the week. The stoek on the mar
ket is light, bnt tally equal to the demand, which
has not been very active. There has been no
change in pne .s, and we renew our quotations of
last week, vis -. New York Refined, 60a65 cents;
Golden Syrup, 80a90 cents per gallon.
Oats—The market is now well supplied with
Oqta, and in consequence has declined in price.
The inquiry does not keep pace with the increas
ed stock. The article is selling at 80c per bushel
in sacks. If taken from the wharf, the general
rate ia 75a80o per bushel, which U a filling off of
5al0e from last week’s rates.
Oxiors—There is an abnndant supply of Onion,
on the market, and with but a limited demand,
price# hare given way. A good article ie now
aSOnig at f3aS 58 per bbl. * .
Potatoes—A Urge quantity of Potatoes have
arrived daring thd week, for which there appears
99 be a steady and increasing demand. The arti
cle is selling at $3 50et per bbl, bnt targe sales
from the wharf have been made at fignree a shade
lower.
Bora—Quite an active demand haa existed for
Rope daring the past week. The enpply con
tinues fair, and prioee remain unchanged. We
therefore renew our former quotations, viz : 18*
19 cento.
Bice—The demand for Bice during the week
hts been very good, but there ie very little of t e
article on sale, and there has consequently been
an advance of la2c per lb. The stock on the
market is very small. Holder* are asking lSJ^a
14c per lb by the cask. . i
Sugabs.—A good demand has sprung np for
all kinds of sugar during the past week. The
stock on sale is not large, and prices have re
mained about the same as last week, vix : Brown,
16al7 l-2c; B Coffee, 21c; A Coffee, 22e; Crushed,
2$a24c; Powdered, 23a24c per lb.
Salt—During the week upwards of 12,000
sacks have been received direct from Liverpool.
In the early part of the week it was sold at $3 25a
8 50 per sack, in lota of 500. Within the last few
days it has declined, apd can now be purchased
at $2 75a8 per 100 sacks. The market is well
stocked with Liverpool Salt, and all demands can
be supplied. The shipments to the interior and
Florida have been large since our last report.
Timber—There continues to b« an active de
mand for good timber, but most of the rafis that
come to market are of an inferior quility and not
suitable for foreign trade. Raft Timber brings
from $>0 to SOper 1000 feet. Small dimensions
of poor quality are at a lower figure. A fair
quality ot good merchantable will command from
$23 to 25 per thousand feet.
Exchakqe —But little change has taken place
in the money market during the week. Gold ia
not so abnndant, and only offered in small lota.
The demand has been very limited. Sight
Checks on New York sell at par to 1-2 per
cent, premium. Buyers, pay 47 a 48 per
cent premium for gold, and sell for 49J4-—
We hear of small sales at 50c. For Silver the
demand is limited at $1 85 a 1 36. The rate for
