V very enjoyable and recherche enter- i v.umout occurred yesterday afternoon [,,, lioard the above new and elegant L'tmier, where quite a large party of our i ,. j • iig merchants and citizens assem- | i to partake of a sumptuous dinner, j lV or Arnold, who was in one of Ids ; w racteristic and jovial moods, delivered very felicitous speech, which gave great, ■4 to the gastronomic portion of the en- I rtainment. The boat was the theme of Miuiration from all who visited her, and ... known not which to congratulate the r «t—the courteous and gallant Captain fniwell, who commands her, the enter prising and public spirited merchants, Messrs. Hunter & Gammell, who act as r Agents in this city, or the travelling immunity who are fortunate enough to ,,)mcss so substantial and beautiful a ,e;i craft to cross old Neptune’s bosom. flu' press was well represented by del- f it'ions from the Herald and National i{. ■.mhltam offices, and the whole affair ;i;l ,sprl off in a more than satisfactory man- J( ,.. We are, owing to the crowded ( tntc of our columns, reluctantly com plied to postpone giving a full descrip- of this model steamer until ( nr next issue. One thing we can safely fav The Pioneer. Line, to which the Tiber belongs, does not advertise in ike j>. v Miani, but we can assure our readers ; »equally as popular, safe and desirable , s those who do, and whatever we say j, commendation of their boats can therefore be relied upon as purely dis interested advice. Itrral of JIe»*n. G. B. Lamar andG. B. Lamar, Jr. j In Monday’s Republican wo mentioned it i icily the arrest of the above named gen- tlemen by a U.States Detective. We learn ilrooi a gentleman who reached this city last evening, that Mr. O. B. Lamar, Jr., jivHS arrested in Thomasville on Wednes- jiiay lust, and is now on his way to this . ity under a special guard. It was re- i Sorted on the street that immediately on i i;he arrival of G. B. Lamar, Jr., both j parties will be sent to Washington, D. C., ■ unler a military escort, and there await a : ji trial before a military tribunal, j >u a charge of attempting to bribe ■ol’icials in relation to the seizure of a j large quantity of cotton. We trust that :t will again be proven that Madame ru- :.,<*r lias once more been too busy with the reputations of private citizens, whose characters stand above reproach both '■firth and South. Until the matter is fully investigated, and something more ■iiun idle street rumors are furnished us •"i material, we shall refrain from publish er; any unjust accusations against these .plight, high-minded citizens From At half-past — River IaWlUt**** 1 twelve o’clock yesterday the steamer R. H. May, Captain Jones, arrived from Augusta. Captain Jones makes the fcl- lbwing report: TheR. H. May departed from August,a on Sunday morning last; aae left at Augusta the steamer Amazon; passed at Bugg’s Bar steamer CaldweH, lightering; passed at Silver Bluff steamer L. The American Seamen’s Friend Society of New York, has commissioned the Rev. L. H. Pease as Seamen’s Chaplain for the Port of Savannah. He comes well recommended, and is putting “Pen field’s Mariners’ Church,” on Ray street, in re. pair, and expects to open it for public worahi next Sabbath, at the usual hour for morning an - endal sad Accident. Yesterday morning, while Mr. Chauncey F. ■Mnitn was returning from White Bluff in a Btuegy, in company with Mr. Edward Con i' rse, of this city, the horse, from some un- Hnotvn cause, suddenly took fright and dashed H: «n Whitaker street at a furious rate. j|j|tt !ule endeavoring to check the speed of the ri’tencd animal the reins broke, and the Biiimal became perfectly uncontrollable, dash- ijpg the buggy against the corner of the street, rowing out Mr. Smith and breaking his right nn. inflicting a wound on his temple, and iherwise injuring him. Mr. Smith’s wounds were dressed by Dr. —lulloch. Mr. Converse was fortunate enough o escape unhurt. Stealing Cotton. On Monday night twenty-two bales of cotton ; i, | e it ou ’the wharf, near the steamer Scorpio, ' tbe toot ot Whitaker street. In the morning >' o of the bales were missing, notwithstanding vo private watchmen were employed to watch i cotton. At four o’clock in the morning a “in named John filahn was detected on the : of with a truck in hispossession, of which he mid give no account. He also had his pockets t cotton, and while being conveyed to t'be in! house he attempted to make his escape, was arrested by the police after a sharp and ird i ace, and yesterday was turned over to a •gistrate by the Mayor for prosecution. ’iarihe Disasters for November. Halloway, a stranger to the ways of city life, arrived a day or two since, and par took of Georgia whisky. The Folice found him in the streets, sick and nnable to find his way to his boarding house. As he was re pentant, of good appearance, and probably not accustomed to debouch, the Mayor read him a lecture and allowed him to depart. William Thompson was charged with firing off a pistol in the Btreets on Monday night, at the corner of Bryan and Whitaker streets. No evidence was produced that the prisoner com mitted the offence, and he'was dismissed. Barnard ltooney was again brought up by his better (or worse) half, charged with im proper conduct in attempting to enter his own house on Monday night. From the evidence, it appeared that Mrs. R had kept her husband ont in the cold and damp on Monday night, for three hours. After many kind entreaties, Bar nard failed to make an impression on the ten der sensibilities of Mrs. R., and she positively refused to admit him to his own home. He therefore forced an entrance into his own cas tle, for which act Mrs. R. had him arrested and locked up. The Mayor knew the parties, and was well aware that Rooney was “more sinned against than sinning,” allowed him to depart without a fine. The Mayor read the parties a lecture, and hoped he would never again see them brought up before him. T. McCone.—This individual was charged with drunkeness and disorderly conduct, and paid a fine of $5 and costs. John Mabn, late from New York, but who has been a resident of this city for the last six months, was brought up charged with stealing a truck from the wharf at 4 o’clock on Tuesday morning. As a matter of course, he plead not guilty, but be could not say where he obtained the truck. It was evident that he was bent on evil, and as cotton had disappeared from the wharf that night he was turned over to a magis trate for prosecution. Joseph Fitzpatrick and P.Munner engaged in a free and easy fight, on West Broad street, near IndiaD, at halt-past 3 o’clock on Tnesday morning. Murner was terribly beat, and Fitz patrick received a stab in his breast and hand. A. McKoone and John Fitzpatrick were mixed up in the affair. As all parties got a good thrashing, and in consequence bf the conflict ing evidence, the Mayor was unable to decide who were the aggressors, he therefore dis charged the whole party with a warning not to appear again before him. From Charleston. The steamer Rockland, which left Charleston yesterday morning, arrived at this port at two o’clock this morniDg. To the Citizens of Savannah. On the application of many prominent citizens, representing all the interest of the city, Col. Edward C. Anderson has consented to be a candidate for the office of Mayor of Savannah. His name is, therefore, presented to you for your suf frages. It is unnecessary to urge upon your consideration the character or ca pacity of one so well known to you. lie has served you in the same position be fore, and the manner in which he dis charged the duties of the office is fresh in your memories. His recent sacrifices and services in a cause which, whether right or wrong, was the cause of his State and his people, should give him ad ditional claims upon those who served and suffered with him. It is confidently believed that these claims will not be ig nored at the ballot-box. The following ticket is placed in nomi nation, and will be supported by i ... . Many Voters. For 'Mayor : ’ * E.
