the Freedmeh
preaching: Sedition to
of Georgia.
A very important ease, involving mat-
get neither without hard labor and persis
tent industry. You are not only author
ized but urged by Government and your
well-wishers to make the best contracts
you can with your former masters. If
you are imposed upon yourno^ tape the
courts of, justice thrown open to you,
where you can obtain speedy redress for.) VENGEANCE AND PARADE THE
ters of the highest importance to both
the white and black races of our State,
and, in fact, to the entire South, was on
trial yesterday at the Provost Court be
fore a military commission. A colored
man by the name of Bradley, hailing
from Boston, was arraigned before the
court charged with uttering seditious and
treasonable language at a public meeting
held at the Second African Church in
this city last week. Nearly tk6 entire
day was consumed in organizing the
court, and but little progress was made
in investigating the case, which promises
to be of deep interest as soon as the en
tire testimony is taken.
We are not in full possession of all the
facts relating to the affair, but we are in
formed that some very grave charges are
made against Mi. Bradley by intelligent
colored men of this city, which, if sub
stantiated, will surely cause the accused
serious trouble. It is reported that Brad
ley in publio meeting urged the Freed-
men to resist, if necessary, at the point of
the bayonet, all attempts on the part of
agents of the Freedman’s Bureau to dis
possess or remove" them from the aban
doned lauds now ordered by Government
to be returned to their former owners.—
“Also, that the United States Govern
ment should be compelled to pay the full
value of all property belonging to Freed-
men destroyed by Gen. Sherman’s army
during his marches through Georgia.”
Gen. Tillson informs us that Bradley has
lead the deluded colored people here to
believe that by signing a petition which
he has drawn up, and'paying a fee of 31,
.the rights of suffrage will be immediately
extended to the colored race. We hear
that through these Utopian representa
tions Bradley has succeeded in obtaining
several thousand dollars, with which
funds he was soon to start for Washing
ton for the purpose of carrying out his
project, it is also stated that the speaker
cautioned the Freedmen against making
any contracts for labor. In addition to
the above startling and dangerous advice
there are other charges an (^specifications
which will be revealed to-day on trial,
the full particulars of which we intend to
lay before our readers. With the above
brief explanation we must at present con
tent ourselves, but believing we enjoy the
full confidence of all reasonable, intelli
gent colored men, we desire to offer for
their earnest consideration a few timely
suggestions before concluding this article.
Of the guilt or innocence of Mr. Brad
ley we are not yet in possession of suffi
cient evidence to warrant us in express
ing an opinion, but we hazard nothing
in saying that all such advice as is attri
buted to him is pernicious in the extreme,
and, if not disregarded and denounced
by,the colored people, will surely lead to
evil results and jeopardise the liberty,
happiness and prosperity of the black
race. When a man tells you that
the Government intends to divide the
abandoned lands and confiscated planta
tions among the Freedmen, close your
ears to' all such ridiculous and wicked
falsehoods. Government gives lands to
no one, neither white nor black. There
fs no intention to do any thing of the
kind, and no such unconstitutional
powers have been invested in any
of its agents. If you want land,
houses, mules, farming implements, and
other property, you can secure them in
but one way, and that is by hard, honest,
constant toil There is but one path
leading to comfort and prosperity. Only
free labor, earnest attention and diligence
can only give you these blessings. What
ever necessaries or luxuries of life you
now require must be purchased
from the liberal compensation which con - '
stant employment will surely afford to all
who will seek their legitimate sphere and
field of occupation. Turn a deaf ear to
the man who would deceive you by paint
ing too bright pictures for you. J"f you
want lands, you are free, and can buy or
lease them the same as a white man.—
Make your own terms, but remember,
whatever contracts you now enter into
are just as binding as though your com
plexion was as fair as the fairest. Justice
is now stern and inflexible in its demands,
and is no longer a respecter of persons.
You are to be henceforth and forever held
amenable to the laws of our land, the
same that govern the white man, and you
must, therefore, beware of listening to
the syren voices «f those who would
tempt you to the brink of ruin. Gov
ernment will protect you in the full ex
ercise of all your privileges, but one of
the greatest of these new boons ia the
freedom to work and reap the reward of
your labor.
The black man is now on trial before
tta world, and knowing this faot, act pru
dently and conscientiously in all thing.

upon his enemies according to his own
interpretation. The individual who coun
sels you to refuse to labor unless
you can obtain fabulous and un
reasonable wages, and strives to in
still into your minds vague notions
of independence is yonr worst enemy.
The man Who encourages you to wreak

The true friend of the black man urges
him to be kind and respectful to his for
mer master, and to strive to for
get the times of slavery. This
is the only way ••to obtain that
respect and confidence so essential to a
perfect understanding and permanent
reconciliation between employer and em
ployee. Remember the words of the im
mortal Lincoln, “ With malice towards
none, and charity for all,” and make it
part of the routine of your daily life to
study well the full meaning of this noble
Christian sentence, and practice it in all
your intercourse with man. Bend every
effort to build up your schools and
churches and to establish savings banks
for the safe-keeping of your hard earned
money, but abandon at once all absurd
notions about donations of any kind from
Government. You are too poor to re
main idle one hour; therefore, instead of
squandering precious time Christmas and
New Year in senseless frolics and riotous
dissipations, let the hours be spent in
profitable labor. “Learn to labor and
to wait.”

Savannah Savings Bank for th«
Freedman.
Last evening a preliminary^meeting of
gentlemen interested in the progress and
welfare of the Freedmen was held at the
Bank of Commerce, for the purpose of
taking the initiatory steps towards organ
izing a Freedman’s Savings and Trust
Company Bank. The movement is an ex
cellent one, and will do much towards
relieving the suffering and distress
of the liberated people.
The meeting, after thoroughly discus
sing the plans of the feasible project,
presented the names of twelve prominent
gentlemen to act asau advisory finance
committee, and then adjourned until
Friday evening next. The scheme is
practical one, and the bill authorizing
the incorporation of such institutions
was carried through both Houses of Con
gress unanimously, and is already firmly
established iu New York and other
cities.
In a few days we shall bq able to lay
before our readers the full particulars of
this enterprise.
The Fair To-Xigkt.
Wo hope our readers will not forget the fair
which commences this evening at 7 o’clock, at the
Fireman’s Hall, under the auspices of the noble
ladies of Savannah. The objeot of the Fair has
been already stated. We would advise all oar
yonng friends to go early to the Fair ; to carry
fair au.ount of greenbacks in their pockets, a fair
one on the arm, and leAvfc a fair supply o f
change with |the fair venders, who will be at the
tablet in fair proportion. This will he a gallant
af-fair on their part, and will assist tha ladies in
their philanthropic undertaking.
Mr. Hamilton's Benefit.
In consequence of the inclemency of the
weather there was no performance at the thea
tre last evening, and the benefit of this ster
ling actor was postponed till to-morrow eve
ning, when Sbakcpeare’s tragedy of Hamlet
will be produced, as announced. This evening
Mr. Hamilton appears as Cardinal Richelieu,
in Bulwer’s great play of Richelieu, with Miss
M. E. Gordon as Jnlia de Mortimer.
The murderers of Mr. Crew.
It affords us the amplest gratification to an
nounce that the murderers of Mr. James R.
Crew have been arrested and lodged in jail,
with ample evidence to convict them. There
are three of them—all negroes. Their names
are Henry Brown, who hails from Louisville,
Ky.; Wm. Thompson, hailing from Macon;
and Bill Deuny, who lives in this place. They
were arrested by Deputy Marshal W. P. La
nier, assisted by Lient. Starnes of the police.
Mr. Lanier deserves the most nnlimited credit
for the admirable tact he displayed in tracing
up the murderers. H e did it most skillfully,
and with complete success. We hope the
wretches will have a speedy trial, and receive
the highest penalty of the law. Even that is
too good for them.
The same precious trio broke into Mr. D.
Mayer’s store on Snnday night, and have been
arrested previously on the charge of stealing.
We hope the jail is seenre enough to hold them,
If not, let there be a double guard employed
until after Judge Bigham has a chance to dis
pose of them.—Atlanta New Era, 6th.

We learn from the August. Con.titutioualiat
of the 9th that between 7 and 8 o clock Thumday
niirht, a colored soldier wm shot .nd meUnfly
killed by Mr. Thos. Olive, a city Policeman, who
ws s on duty near the Lower Market.
After the occurrence the policeman reported
the matter to the officer on duty at the guard
house, and gave himself up. The .flair being
known at headquarters, a white guard proceeded
the City Hall, arrested Mr. Oliver and
lodged him in jail. It was reported yesterday
afternoon that he is to be tried by a military
commission. ’ . ,
Persons acqniinted with Mr. Olive speak of
him in high terms, as being a sober, honest and
inoffensive citizen.
Prom what we learn, the soldier was very dis
orderly, and Mr. Olive attempted to arrsn
him, whereupon, he made a move as if to draw
.weapon, when Mr. Olive fired two shots, the
fink missing and the second taking effect in ths
head, causing instant death.
This unfortunate affair caused great excite
ment among the colored soldiers in our midst,
who with fixed bsyonets and loaded muskets
paraded up and down Broad street, swearing
vengeance and threatening to arrest and kill
all policemen. They arrested some of the
police and took pistols from citizens. The
unoffending police were afterwards discharged
and the pistols ordered to be returned to their
owners.

The Senate passed a bill to regulate contract 8

provided that if they are for over one month
they must be in writing. The working hoars are

If the patient be a female, the approach of the men
ses ia looked for with anxiety, as the first symptom m
which Nature is to show her saving power in diffusing
the circulation, and visiting the cheek with the bloom
of health. Alas'. Increase of appetite has grown by
what It fed on and the energies of the system are pros
trated. and the whole economy is deranged. Th e
beautiful and wonderful period in which body and
mind undergo so fascinating a change from child to
woman, is looked for In vain; the parent's heart bleeds
'n anxiety, and fancies the grave but waiting for its
victim.
Helmbold’s Extract Bachu
For Weakness arising from Excesses or Early
Indiscretion.
Attended with the following symptoms :—
Indisposition to Exertion, Lose of Power, Lose ot
Memory, Difficulty ot Breathing, General Weakness,
Horror of Disease, Weak Nerves, Tremblii* Dreadful
Horror of Death, Night Sweats, Cold Feet, Wakeful’
need, Dimness of Vision, Languor, Universal lassitude
of the Muscular System, Often Enormous Appetite
with Dyspeptic Symptoms, Hot Hands, Flushing of the
Body, Dryness of the Skin, Pallid Countenance and
Eruptions on the Face, Pain in the Back, Heaviness o
the Eyelids, Frequently Black Spots flying before the
Eyes, with Temporary 8offhskm and Loesof Sight.
Want of Attention, Great Mobility, Restlessness, with
Horror of Society. Nothing is more desirable to such
Patients than Sollfude^and nothing they more dread
for Fear of Themselves, no Repose of Manner, no Ear
nestness, no fcpeculation, but a hurried Transition
from one question to another.
These symptoms, if allowed to go on-which this
Hedidne Invariably removes—soon follow Lose of
Power, Fatuity, and Epileptic Fits, in one of which the
patient may expire.
During the Superintendence of Dr. Wilson, at the
Bloomtngdale Asylum, this sad result occurred to two
patients; reason had for a time left them, and both
died of epilepey. They were of both sexes, and about
twenty yearn of age.
Who can eay that these excesses are not frequently
followed by those direful dfeeases Insanity and Con
sumption? The records of the Iusaijp Asylums, and
the melancholy deaths by Consumption, bear ample
witness to the truth of these assertions. In Lunatic
Asylums the most melancholy exhibition appears.—
The countenance la actually sodden and quite desti
tute—neither Mirth or Grief ever visits It. Should a
sound of the voice occur, it Is rarely articulate.
' “With woeful measures wan Despair
Low sullen sounds his grief beguiled."
Whilst we regret the existence of the above diseases
and symptoms, we are prepared to offer an Invaluable
gift of chemistry for the removal of the consequences—
