a
I have some withered flowers
That are softly laid away,
>*ot because they were so beautiful
And fragrant in their day;
But li tie fingers clasped them,
And little lip* caressed.
And little hands so tenderly
Placed them on "mother's” breast.
Tbe paper that enfoldAhein
Was whit® in other years ;
But 'tie yellw now, and crumpled,
And stained with many tears.
Jet. though they look so worthless,
This naper and the flowers,
They clasp and hold, like links of gold,
Memories of jewel-hours.
1 hare some little ringlets
That are softly laid away ;
Their lustre and their beauty
Are like the sun’s glad ray.
But 'tis not for this 1 prise them—
It is that they restore
Tbe tender grace of a loving face
That gladdens earth no more.
As shipwrecked men, at midnight,
Have oft been known to cling—
With a silent prayer, in wild despair,
To.some frail floating thing—
So l/in darkened moments,
Clasp, with a voiceless prayer,
Whilst wandering wide on grief’s desp tide,
These locks of golden hair.
I have some broken playthings
sid awav.
That are softly laid away,
With some dainty littls garments
Made id's long-past day.
To eacn there ia a history ;
But this I may not tell,
Lest the old, old flood of sorrow
Again should dee and swell.
Now that the skies bare brightened,
And the fearful storm is o’er,
Let me sit in tehdef calmness,
Ou Memory’s silent shore,
And count the simple treasures
That still remain to show
Where Hope’s fair freight, by saddegtfets,
Was shipwrecked, long ago.
I have another treasure
That ia s >ftly laid away.
And, though I have not seen it
This many a weary day, I , f f;j -
From every thing around me
Con es a token and a sign
That 'tia londly watched and guarded,
And that it still is mine, , ,, „
When the flowers lie dead in winter,
In their winding-sheets of snow,
We know they’ll rise to charm our eyes
Again in Summer’s glow.
Thus I, in this chill season,
When Irost and darkness reign,
Wait the blest Spring, whose warmth shall bring
Liie to my flower again.

The
Cotton Crop.
Considering tbe magnitude of the interests af
fected by tbe question ot tbe future as well as of
the present Colton supply, some commercial wri
ters tor the Northern papers are unaccountably
loose in their figures and statements. For ex
ample, the U. S. (New York) Economist, in a
leading article on ‘‘the next cotton .crop,” lays:
"Tbe colored population ot the Sooth ia now
equal te what it was in 1860, when tbe cotton
crop was 5,lu0,l00 bales.” Again, the New York
Times, in an editorial article on the same topic,
asks: "Is it cot possible to hare a large crop ot
the staple planted and picked next year ? We
do not speak ot such crops as were raised in
ldtil; we do not dream ol realising five millions
of bales, nor tour millions of bales.” Now, that
we ever raised five millions of bales,—or sis the
Eoonomist states with more apparent precision,
fire million odb hundred thousand—will be news
to our Southern readers. The editors of such
journals as the Economist are sopposed to keep
lor lelerence files ot the leading Price Currents,
and particularly of those published in the prin
cipal seaports. We presume they do; but if we
be in eiror in this supposition, tbe writer ol tbe
cotton article in question could have readily ob
tained tbe desired information by applying at
thcotfice of tbe New York Shipping mat, and re
ferring to its annual cotton statement* publish
ed in September 1860 and 1861. From these he
would have learned that the largest crop ever
raised in America was in 1859-60, when it
amounted to 4,675,770 bales. He would have al
so discovered that the orop of 1860-1 waa only
*,69s,9a6 bales, and that of 1858-9 3,851,481 bales.
Ja>- would, moreover, have found that the aver
age for tbe ten years ending in 1859 was 2.994,-
001 bales. The Economist moreover, says, “the
colored population of the South is now equal to
What n was iu i860.” The editor probably sup
poses that the natural increase has supplied tbe
loss from the casualties of war. And yet we
find it staled that the mortality among the ne-
g roes in North Carolina twept off no 16M than
aif their number in a single year. As we hare
said before, we doubt the correctness of this state
ment, but there can be no question that the
mortality of the race has been unprecedented,
perhaps even during the cholera epidemic. Now
that peace is restored, and every inducement is
held out to the freedmen to return to their old
masters and accept the liberal wages offered them
with all tbe comforts of a plantation borne,—even
sow, large numbers of them are leading a life ot
miserable vagrancy, thronging |to the military
posts, towns, and cities, filling the hospitals, and
falling riotims to the diseases incidental to the
breaking up of their accustomed habits and the
luss of their former comforts. Nothing can save
them from the otherwise inevitable tats before
them but ihe legislation of the Southern Slates.
'' Humane yet rigid labor codes, while they would
benefit the negro, and make freedom a blessing
to him instead of a corse, would obtain from his
labor the greatest amount of production possible
under his new condition. If, on thb contrary,
the freedmen are negieoted and left to their own
natural impnlse. to choose between idleness end
labor, the most ol them will undoubtedly prefer
the former, and production will be diminish '
