mutually honoring their memories.
He who would refuse to do so, be he
Northerner or Southerner, “Reb” or
“Yank,” is bereft of the noblest qualities
of mao, and that he cannot be steadfast
in his own principles is clearly proved
by the fact of his being without respect
and admiration for those who nobly
fought and died in support of theirs.
The Unionist is not as cold hearted as
many, unfortunately, still believe. He
can honor the dead Southern soldier and

loss, and yet maintain to the last hi*

Political Situation.
Despite of the efforts of alarmists who
are willing to make any sacrifice to keep
•Eve the feeling of distrust engendered
bvthe late eonflict-who would protect
and foster the growth of the L pas tree
of venomous, bitter hatred, whose blight
ing influence are felt all over the country
—instead of tearing it up root and branch,
we cannot discover anything in the po-
Etjcal aspect of affairs to cause the least
uneasiness in the mfhds of our people.
On the oontrary, we confidently believe
that every right to which we are m
justice entitled, will ultimately be se-
tTXKd to US. It is 8 dangerous ope
ration for one portion of the people
to attempt to correct the mistakes
and punish the offences of another—
one which wifi of necessity call into
action the most refined and rational
expedients for its proper manage
ment »d yet we will not for a
moment suppose that those who have
thus far acted so magnanimously, and
evidenced a disposition to be guided
throughout by the highest wisdom, will
be found wanting tfhen these virtuous
qualities are most needed. It is because
-we entertained these sentiments that we
have not caught up every word and action
©f certain members of Congress, and at
taching to them an importance it was not
intended they should assume, joined in
the great hue and cry against radicalism.

are now past forever, and with them
Trt all feelings of bitterness go. We
hove had enongh of war and its conse
quences, and while we deplore that snch
a scourge has befallen our people, let us
for the sake of our common country not
perpetuate one of its evils and perhaps the
worst—the spirit of disunion.
It is necessary that America should
stand before the world (the present atti
tude of affairs proves it) in all her gigan
tic force. Real enemies, not friends and
brothers, may yet have to be taught les*
sons—England, for instance, who played
so mean a game to North and South, and
has won the contempt of both. To live
in peace we must keep ourself prepared
for war, and the elements of division
would be badly calculated to forward
that preparation. ‘ ‘St/ons unis et tout est

NEW ADVERTISEMENTS
lose of tbe Orphan's Fair.
The Fair closed on Saturday night, af
ter enjoying a ost brilliant success of
six days’ duration. A large and enthu*
siastic crowd were in attendance to wit.
ness the finale of Charity’s Carnival. A
few articles only were disposed of at auc
tion. One of the chief attractions, as
well as of amusement and gratification to
all present, was the fine instrumentaliza-
tion of the well organizedjMnd of the
12 th Maine regiment, who, under the di
rection of their skilful and gentlemanly
leader, Mr. Melville Andrews, discoursed
some eachanting music. The generosity
of Mr. Melville Andrews and the mem
bers of his courteous band, will ever be
remembered with feelings of deep grati
tude by those who can appreciate such
acts of benevolence for so sacred a cause.
We regret that tfie crowded state of our
columns this rgornng, prevents us from
giving a full report of the close of the
Fair, but we must content ourselves by
congratulating the ladies on its trium
phant success.

A number of charitable Northern la
dies in our city have reoently been busily
engaged in preparing all the details
necessary for the [furnishing of a sub
stantial Christmas dinner to the soldiers
of the Post Hospital. The ladies, after
holding one or two meetings, selected *‘
Finance and Visiting Committee, the
duty of the latter requiring them to fur
nish sufficient funds to procure a splendid
dinner for the gallant men now separ
ated from those near and dear to them
by the calamities of war. A most liberal
sum was contributed by our Northern
merchants and citizens for this humane
and laftdablo enterprise, and to-day the
hearts of dor soldiers will be made glad
by the thought that they are not foigot-
