Atlanta, December 20th, 1861.
Council met. Present, Hon. T. F. Lowe,
Mayor; Aldermen Oatman, Watkins, Crew,
Crawford, Kelley, Lynch and Kile. Ab
sent, Aldermen Hardman, Mecaslin and
Robson.
The minutes oflast meeting w’ere read and
adopted.
The case of the Central Railroad and
Banking Company was taken up, and upon
hearing evidence the motion to be relieved
trora taxes was refused.
The case of the Council against G. W.
Croft was taken up and Mr. Croft was
fined Five Dollars.
The resignation of James Patterson,
nightwatchman for the First Ward was
handed in and received.
The petition of Arcbbald Turner, to be
relieved of the tax accruing oj his persons,
was received and referred to the Committee
on Relief.
Alderman Crew offered a resolution in fa
vor of S. B. Sherwood for $42, for Public
Works, Lamps, &c. Ordered to be paid.
Alderman Kile offered a resolution which
was lost, that the property of persons, now
iu service in the Confederate Stales, be ex
empt from levy and sale, for taxes during
their absencee. Ayes, Kile. Nays, Crew,
Oatman, Kelley, Lynch, and Crawford.
Alderman Crew offered the following res
olution :
Resolved, That in view of the present con
dition of the finances of the city’, the Council
does not feel justified in making such an ap
priatiou as that recommended by a meeting
of the citizens at a recent meeting called by
Mayor, for the relief the sufferers by the late
fire in Charleston.
On motion of Alderman Crew, it was re
solved that the services of the ten extra
Policemen appointed by His Honor, the
Mayor, be now dispensed with.
Council adjourned.
Atlanta, December 27th, 1861.
Council met. Present, Hon. T. F. Lowe,
Mayor; Aldermen Hardman, Oatman, Crew,
Wathins, Crawford, Kelley, Mecaslin, Kile
and Lynch. Absent, Alderman Robson.
The minutes of the last meeting were read
and confirmed.
A petition of A. W. Jones, additional to
one of the 13th inst., was read, received and
referred to the Committee on Tax.
The petition of W. M. Hill to be released
from the obligation, which he is under to
have the Wood House on the corner of De
catur and Whitehall streets removed, and
praying that it may remain in its present
■condition, tor another year, or until times
■change for the better, was received, read
and on motion of Alderman Crew, was
granted.
The Finance Committee reported bills
amounting to slll 08. Report adopted.
On motion of Aid. Crew, Resovcd, That
the Clerk be instructed to advertise for and
redeem Nos. 6,7, 8. 9 and 10, of City Bonds,
issued in 1853.
A petition praying Council to appropri
ate a portion of the City Hall Lot for the
benefit of Trinity Church, was received and
laid on the table.
Council adjourned.
LADIES SOLDIER'S RELIEF SOCIETY
Atlanta, Dec. 24th, 1861.
Society met to-day. There being so few
members in attendance the election oi the
officers, Presideet and Vice-President, was
defered until the next meeting, which will
be the first Tuesday in the new year.
We do earuectly hope that the 1e lies will
■ come ou> and commence afresh with the
year.
It is also desired that the ladies will be
{punctual in meeting at the right hour, as
.hereafter the Society will not wait, but will
commence precisely at 10 o’clock.

FIRE !
A small wooden building between the
Trout House and the Masonic. Hall, occupi
ed by Messrs. Mecaslin & Rodes, as a Fam
ily Grocery, was destroyed this morning, at
about 6 o’clock, by fire. It is supposed that
the fire was accidental. There was, we learn,
only a partial insurance on the premises.—
Had the wind prevailed in a different direc
tion, we doubt whether our gallant Firemen,
with all their exertions, could have saved the
Trout House from the devouring and fierce
element. As it was, they were successful in
their untiring efforts, and thus saved per
haps a lare portion of our city.
We again renew our caution to our read
er* some few days ago. “Beware of Fire

Richmond, December 26.—The editor of
the Petersburg, Va., Express says that pass
engers arrived there from Norfolk to-day
who state that a flag of truce had arrived
from Fortress Monroe, reporting that ano
ther steamer had arrived from Europe,
bringing the following intelligence:
Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria,
Is dead; no particulars of his deatli are
given.
Warlike preparations were continued iu
England.
English ship owners had sent orders to
their agents in the United States to hurry
home all British bottoms immediately.
There is said tube no sytupany whatever
in France for the United States, and if war
occurs between the latter country and Eng
land, it is said that France will certainly
side with England.
The steamers Persia and Australian pass
ed Cape Race, loaded with troops, Ac., for
Canada.
Arrival of ttac Persia.
Richmond, December 26.—The steamship
Persia has arrived at Cape Race, and brings
Liverpool dates to the 16th inst.
No markets are yet reported.
Prince Albert died suddenly, on the 15th
inst., of gastric fever.
The British merchant marine has been
warned by the Government that war with
the United States is imminent,

Richmord, December 26.—Hon. Francis
E. Rives, of Petersburg, Virginia, died here
to-day.

men, comprising the Soldiers’ Relief Asso
ciation of Stone’s District in this county.
The articles sent, were received at Manas
sas, and distributed, as directed by you,
“among the most needy soldiers” of the
three companies from this county, in the
7th and Bth Georgia Regiments. In behalf
of those soldiers, I return you, and through
you the members of said association, my
sincere thanks for the kind and patriotic
