Confederacy, except by a victory, and the j
hopes of a victory wanes with every day’s
deny. His army is dissolving by desertion,
Ins supplies wasting, his retreat certainly
threatened. We judge, therefore, that if he
means to light at a!), it will be near Atlanta,
and he cannot he sure that Gen. Rosecrans
will leave him even the chance of a battle at
that place. Y ct there must he some point
at which the process of outflanking comes
to an end, an JBragg must finally fight where
Ins adveisary chooses, or find the Atlantic
ocean in his rear and retreat into that.
That was the opinion of the N. Y. Trib
une a few days ago. By this time it lias
learned that Bragg did fight—not near At
lanta, but just at the point where he thought
Rosecrans had gone far enou jt . Having
foiled all Rosecrans’ “flank movements,’’and
got him in agood place for if, Bragg stopped
retreating, and has given him one of the fin
est drubbings of this war. We trim that the
Nashville Union, New York Tribune and
New Y\ rk Times arc all perfectly satisfied
with the “solid results” accruing from Rose
crans’ movements. We are sure that his
“decided generalship” in Georgia will be the
theme of conversation in Yankeedom.

Attempt to Discover a Murderer hy
PiioTooRAPn.-- - We believe, says the Evans
ville (Ind.) Journal, it is one of Mrs. South-
worth’s stories in the New York Ledger that
represents a murderer as being convicted by
a photograph of his victim’s eyes, upon the
retina of which was pictured the features ol
the assassin. Similar experiments, we are
informed, have been made in France with
great success, and mysterious murders tin
raveled through the instrumentality of Da
guerre’s wonderful art. Notwithstanding
we had heard ot these strange things, we
were still under the impression that “dead
men tell no tales,” Until a recent experiment
has shaken our faith and almost convinced
U3 that dead men may yet speak.
On Sunday forenoon Mr. Adams* a pho
tographist of this city, at the solicitation of
some gentlemen who had read of smiliar ex
periments in France, took his instrument
and visited the scene of the late murder in
German township. This was some thirty
hours after the murdered man had breathed
his last. There was a great deal of dust fly
ing, and a great ciowd collected, which ma
terially interfered with Uic success of the
experiment, but notwithstanding unfavora
ble circumstances, Mr. Adams succeeded in
taking a tolerably fair “negative.” Upon
this he has been experiment ing, and yester
day wc were called on to witness the result
of his experiment.
lie had taken an ambrotype picture of the
eye of the deceased, and then rubbing out
everything but a single object apparently in
the centre of the eye, this was placed under
an ordinary magnifying glass. At the first
glance the object appeared blurred and in
distinct, but, getting the proper focus, the
outlines of a human face were at once dis
tinguishable. The image was apparently the
face of a man with unusually prominent
cheek boucs, long nose, and rather broad
forehead. A black moustache was plainly
seen, and also the direction of the eyes, which
seemed to be looking at some object side-
wise. One of the eyes was as clearly seen
as the eyes in a common ambrotyc or leno-
tpye. Some who examined the image
thought the man of which it seemed to be a
resemblance had a Roman nose and also had
on a cap.
Mr. Adams is continuing liis experiment,
but whether he will succeed in making any
clearer developments remains to be seen.-
His labors thus lar are abundantly rewarded
by the success which lia3 attended Ills ef
forts, as it seems to us he has demonstrated
that an object was pictured upon the eye ot
Mr. Herke at the time of his death, and that
the object was a human face.
g^g“Read the following, from a late num
ber of Harper’s Weekly, a journal of civil
ization, so styled :
The question next arises how to hold the
conquered States! We say let the country
be studded with Forts, garrisoned by loyal
black men, whose duty it shall bo to keep
down their former masters.
A Remarkable Importation.—The last
flag of truce boat brought eleven large boxes
of Bibles and Testaments, sent by a North
ern Bible Society to enlighten the “heathen”
of tho South. The propriety of their recep
tiou may be considered questionable, since
every such movement on the part of the
Yankees doubtless has some hidden motive.
The boxes were brought to this city by the
Schultz on Wednesday evening.—llichmond
Examiner.
AFrom Gen. Lee’s Army.—Notwithstand
ing a collision has been predicted between
the armies of. Gens. Lee and Meade l'or sev
eral da} s past, parties immediately from the
army persist h, representing everything as
quiet. There is an occasional cavalry skir
mish, and as a result ol one of these, 35 pri
soners were brought down by the Central
train last night.—Kiel:. Dis.

SECOND DISPATCH.
Richmond, Sept. 24th—The Baltimore
American of the 22d has been received.
A telegram from Washington on the 21 sj
says:
The Repubican extra has the following :
“The enemy attacked Rosecrans again on
Sunday about 9 a. m., with overwhelming
numbers. The battle raged fiercely all day.
According to the latest accounts, two of
Rosecrans’ divisions gave way in either pan
ic or confusion, but from the right ten thou
sand men afterwards rallied, and succeede d
in getting back to their placos, while the
balance of the army had not given w r ay
at all.”
At the latest accounts, Rosecrans was driv
ing (?) the advance of the rebel army back.
The number in killed and wounded on
both sides, will not' fall short of 30,000.—
Rosecrans cannot be driven from his posi
tion, should the rebel force prove twice as
strong as they are reported to be. Burnside
has not reinforced Rosecrans as was expect
ed.”
Thej Washington Chroniclej fc of the 2lst
says:
“ From private information of a strictly
reliable nature wc learn that the rams now
building in England will not be permitted
by the government to go at large, but will
be escorted to France hy an English war
steamer, and delivered to the owners, who
are Frenchmen.”
The rebel General Marsh Walters w'as
mortally wounded on the Gth instant, in a
duel with Gen Marmaduke, at Bayou Matain
The difficulty occurred by Marmakuke’s
jealousy of Walters, who was recently pro
moted from a subaltern to the ranking
General.

From Lynchburg,
Lynchburcj, Sept. 24.—A dispatch from
the Superintendent of the Dodamead &
Tennessee road, dated Glade Springs, 24th,
says that the Yankees came to Bristol yes
terday, aud proceeded to, and burnt the
bridge, and drove off the force employed in
rebuilding it, threw down a portion which
had been put up, aud burnt all cattle guards
between that point and Bristol.
They destroyed the water tanks at Bris

and the bridge to protect them, and will
have the bridge up so that the trains can
pass to-night.
