The capture of the Foil oral ('Ai>iVil, -^.bcie Uie ourang-outang sits cnlbroned and issues his despotic edicts* is a glorious result, quite within Uie range of probability. Next week will bo fruitful of portentous cveifls in this neighborhood, and we look forward to the achievements of our gallant and invincible army with pride and expec tation. dwell s corps is iu advance, with Gen. Edmund Johnson’s division as a van guard. The plans and preparations of the Generals should not be given to the public, but they look to ulterior results of the ut- inost magnitude. It may. be proper to say, that never was att army bettor prepared, with courage and numbers, to encounter a detested toe, than is the army of Northern Ytrgiuia at this momept. Never were men mole earnest, hopeful and confident of success, than our forces. If they can carve their way lit.the Federal capital,They will do it, and then let the high priests of usurp ui *a and tyranny beware of the retri- tiuliou that will follow. Lincoln lias just iwoclaimed a thanksgiv ing for his subjects. He i invites them to thank God that 'they* are at peace with all t »i eigu countries, and that the only thing they have.to' deplore is the exten ive civil war that pie vails among themselves, which the pious potentate regards as a visitation ot the Almighty lor the sins of the people, lb* docs not allude to his own peijury in conmieneing this war, which he pretends to c lil a civil wair, iu.violation of lh«? Constitu- tiou whieh he was sworn to support, not to the hundreds of thousands of murders for which he ii hiuisdf responsible before God and tan, committed in the prosecution of this iniquitous andjnhunian war. With the exception of their sius, fqr which tliey are to repentAia (ia.it and ashcif*, the autocrat proclaims that the people of uie ImitcdNlatcs have cause to return many thanks* to Almighty God.— The w r ar has been vexatious, but iklias not hutvirupted the pursuits of agriculture, com- iacre3 and manufacturers, nor -interfered wifli the 'iuereaac of population, nor dis turbed the peaceful relations which his gov ern nent suslaius to foreign Yiatioos. It these statements were frue, they might be a cause of graiitudc to Providence, but, unfortunately, there is not a word of- trntb in them. Yankeedom, by this abominable w ar. nm] uo oa< understauds better that these have been its consequences''than the currency is rotten, whose merchants, through out the length and breadth of the land, are already bankrupts, and whose Government is on the very brink of bankruptcy! At peace-with foreign nations, .when (he next gales that sweep across the Atlantic may bring the news of war declared against the United States by the Government* both of England France! When England has been growling against the Lincoln Government ever tinea the case of the Trent, atnd the latter, slung and humiliated by the necessity it was under to take the back track, Iras threatened to make war ou the mother country on the first opportunity! — When France has rendered her recogoi lion of the Confederate States a foregone conclusion, and an embassador hat already boon sent to negotiate for the eJxeliange of tho tobacco bought for France by French agent* To this oor government consents, provided the French government will send its own vessels for it. The United Slates protests rn Mo against tins action on the part of the French government. France is, determined to carry out her views, and to send tho vessels. The blockade is raised/, and war with France ensues. Peaceful rc 1 at Ions indeod, present and prospective, with foreign nations, for wliich the Yankees flight to be very grateful! The Senate of Virginia distinguished it self yesterday by laying on the table a bill to suppress gambling, on the ground that it was of “ too sweeping a character.’’ The bill declared playing at faro an infamous offence, and made the parties convicted of it liable to imprisonment; all the tables, ap paratus and properly used iu the game to be forfeited, and all moneys; one half to go to the pereon making 1 he seizure and one halt into the State treasury*. This bill, im periousty demanded by the frequency and flagraucy of this offence, was f on the motion of a grave Senator of this Commonwealth, laid upou the table! The like, 1 fear, will be the fate of tlie bill to regulate the prices of the necessaries of life, and to put down extortion. The spirit* ol speculation and gambling has become too mighty for the minds of public legislators to control it. CLIO. THE FRENCH SBY SYSTEM. Among the many families which rose into notice under the empire ot the first Napole on, few held a more distinguished position in tho Parisian society of the day than that of the Countess B—-. Her house, at the pt riod ot which we speak, was the rendez vous of all the celebrities ol the time—mai- sfmls of France, statesmen, artists, men of letters, alike crowded to her saloons. The baron M was one of her most frequent guests, and had the reputation id' being us witty and amusing a personage as conlu bo met with; in consequence, his company was very generally sought, even by tho highest circles, iu which, though but little known ot his family or connection, he had found means to obtain an excellent footing. One evening, in the winter of 180“», a bril liant party was assembled iu the g*y soons of the Countess B , when a gentleman, Well known to all, arrived in breathless haste and apparently much excited, lie made his way as quickly as possible to the Countess, and all crowded around to hear what great piece of intelligence lie had to communi cate. “Wc arc all, I think,” he said, well ac quainted with Baron M , who is so con stant a visitor here. I regret to say that 1 have just lcared, in the most positive man ner, tnat he is undoubtedly a spy; he has in faot been seen to enter and to leave the Cab inet of Monsieur Fouche. The assembled guests were thunderstruc k at the unexpected announcement, each oae endea voring to recollect what indiscreet ex pression might have passed his lips in ti(c presence of the treacherous baron, and all, naturally enough, feeling extremely uneasy at the possibility of being called upon to answer for some long-forgotten words, spoken, as thought, in the security of private society. The hostess pt course was most indignant at the insult'which had beta put upon her, and could hardly believe in the truth of the accusation. However, something must be done; the Baron was momentarily expected; and un less he were able to clear himself from this serious imputation, he must be at once ex pelled from the society. After some discus sion, therefore, it was decided that, upon the arrival of Baron M— v the Countess should request a few minutes private con versation with him; that she should take him into another room, and having told him of what he was accused, should ask if he had any explanation to offer, as otherwise she should ba obliged to signi y to him, that he must discontinue his visits. In the midst of the invectives which were poured forth on the head of the unfortiiuate baron, that worthy made his appearance. Immediately all was silent, and though he advanced to greet his Iriends with his custo mary easy assurance, he evidently saw that .all was not right, as his most intimate asso ciates of yesterday avoided speaking to him, or at most, gave him the slightest possible salutation. Not being, however, very easily abashed, Baron M—- proceeded, as usual, to wake his bow to the lioites?, who at once, as had been agreed, said to him: „ “Monsieur le Baron, may I request the fa vor of a few words with you in private ? ’ “Certainly, inadame,” replied the Baron, offering his arm, which she declined to take, and led the way to au ante-chamber. The Countess, teeling naturally very nerv ous at the part she had to perform, aiiengrb said, with some hesitation: “I know not whether you aregnilty,' M. le Baron, of the serious accusation which hangs over Aou; and which, unless yon can' remove or explain satisfactorily, must forever close my doors against you.” -The Baron was all attention, as the Countess continued: “1 have been informed, upon what ‘appears to be undoubted authority, that you are in (he pay.cm Monsieur Fouche—.hat you are, iu short, a spy." “Qhreplied the Baron, “is that all? I Will not attempt to deny it; nothing .can be more true ;! am a spy.” “And how,’® exclaimed the lady, “have yon dared to insult me and my guests, by , that I ton * spy ; tad in this capacity, upon some subjects, I sm tolerably well informed, of which' Maddme Is Comtease, I will give you a proof. On. thelast pay-day, at Mbns. Fouches’, you received your, pay for the ln- i’orm&tiou you jmd.brought him^itntncdiate- ly after! had#ecettved mine." “ lYbat P cried the countess; M dare you insinuate anything so Infamous? I if ill have you turned out* of -the - house instant ly.” r • “ Sdfily, madam?, 7 ’ answered the baron; “ that I am a spy ! have not attempted, to deny; that yoa kre likewise a spy I have long known, and-can readily prove. We are m the same boat—we sink or swim to gether: if you proceed to denounce me, 1 shall also denounce you; and there is an end of both rif Ms. If you uphold me, 1 will uphold yon, and wo shall go on as be fore.*' •' “Well,” said the lady, considerably em barrassed at finding that her secret was known, “ what is to be done ? I am in a most difficult position.” “ Not at all, madame,”.replied tlie^Baron. “ l Will tell you what to do; take my arm, and we will return together to the drawing joom, where yon wilt announce that my ex planation has been satisfactory. The countess, seeing there was nothing else to be done, determined to make the best of it, aud as she- advanced .into the room said, with one of her sweetest smiles : “ I am delighted to tell ymi that Monsieur le Baron lias been able to give, me an expla nation, which, though! cannot divulge if, is in ail respects perteefiy salis'actory to me, and therefore 1 am sure it will be so |lo you. 7 ’ ? j- Thc guests were at once relieved from a weight of anxiefy^Ahe’.evening passed off, with the utmost nilarity, and me Baron re gained the good opinions he had lost. It was not till loDg afterwards that the facts of this singular history became known. SOUTHERN units cairui. LARUE SALE MULLED FDD FREIUTS.
