And indeed we thought the “Iron h i-aj’’ was about' 1 'dash into Baltimore, when, to our unfeigned regret, dismay and indignation, w o were inhumed that we were- cnroule for N&r York. The authorities at Gotham, when we ar- t ived there, were like the boy who drew the olephuut, and*was delighted with his prize, but had no place to put it. Dix, which he glanced over with an air of dis masting importance, and said: “So I sup pose you infernal rebels are traveling thro’ onr c«*nntry free of charge and without an escortV” *‘Wc are, sir,” said I, *‘bnt it is un manly in you to insult prisoners on account of the actions of your own officers. We are gentlemen,” continued I, “and gentlemen snch as Gen. Dix resnects and treats as such.” This was the first v aakeo who had offered tis an insult, and we werosoon shielded from his taunts by the entrance ot the Provost who placed us under an escort lor Fortress Mon roe. As we shaftmed down the Chesapeake on the beautiful steamer Adelaide, lounged on bur gorgeous sofas and partook of the many delicacies which her table alfurde J, we little thought that our quarters woulds*x»n be ex changed lor the gloomy walls of Fort Nor folk. Fond anticipations of greeting friends and loved one# in “Dixie,” together with the pleasantness of traveling on a first class pas senger steamer, caused us to forget every care sod mingle with the psssengsrs, as thouga we bad been of like feeling and sen— 1 Umcnt. But,alas! how vainare all human expectations. Instead of going to City Point wo were sent to Fort Norfolk, and as the massive key was turned upon us we were politely informed that we were held as hos tage* for certain Federal non combatants held by our government We remained here two weeks; our fare was very good, and we were permitted to walk about the Voit an hour each day.. Oar friends were allowed to visit us, ana tho officer in com mand, M»jor Murray, treated ns like gent le mon. Here we were joined by fifty or sixty other gents of similar doth. Our disappointment reached- its climax When orders came for us to be sent to Fort McHenry, and had wc not been ashamed to betray the confidence reposed in us by Maj. Mulford in giving the liberties ot the boat, we would have taken possession of the cralt and steamed for “Dixie’s Land.” Arrived at Fort McHenry, we were assign ed Co quarters in a long warehouse looking building, which leaked wor.-e than an ordi nary bush arbor. There other occupants in the house who greatly exceeded us in num ber, and who disputed our right to dwell there; but being reinforced by a couple cf experienced terriers, and & large quantity of scalding water, we routed the enemy com pletely and lived in peaceable possession of our prison home. Here we had permission to stroll at will over about fifty acres of land, and bathe at pleasure in the placid Patapsco which washed the Fort on either side. The ladies of Baltimore visited na often, and gave us many tokens of their kind regards in the way of useful articles of clothing, heavy baskets of delicacies, fruits, ice cream •tee. It. is superfluous to pass eulogies upon Ahe conduct ot these aegeis of merey, when their character is so well known by South erners. There was quite a number of our' servants in the Fort, who wer e captured at Gettystaurg, a tew of whom took the oath and joined the Yankee ar my, whilst most of them steadily refused to work or fight for Abraham Lincoln, President of the so c died United States. It will, perhaps, be admissi ble here to relate a conversation which took place between Titus, a colored man, from South Carolina, and Brig. Gen. Mon it, U. 8. A- It was as follows: Morris—'* Well, Titus, are you willing to enlist and tight for liberty under the Stars and Stripes?”— Titus—'• No, sir, you'may shoot me lust, and den I won’t light ginat my government.”— Morris—“ Well. Titus, they ire going lo put you all in the army if you gOjSouih." “ Dat a jist what 1 want, sir.” Morris—“Don’t you ‘want a good suit of cloUses ?” Titus—“Not from your government,'sir; my government is able to give me clothes," Morris—“Oh, pshawyour government is ‘played out,’ your money’s worthless,” “Dal’s all you know about.it, de money's jest as good in de Soof as *tf» in do Noil, tor dar^hrything high, and nfoney plenty, hpreebrytiog cheap and money skace. Niggamave a dollar in deS mf where bucora don’t have a dime in do Norf. Oh, dar man,?! know'you aint talking when you axin dis chile to fight in de Soul.” Their treatment to ohr servants is even worse than I expected, if those who hare good homes in tliei South would only listen M those who are lottBnatc enough to escape Alter once being^rntYankee hands they willbi; contented at name. * Lost this orticlo should beqpme wearisome I will conclude it by sayunEthat from all my obL-ervation during my Jorthera tour, I am more full/ convinced than ever that a straight forward energetic course will bring us Pkace a»p Independence, wjth all the Wofsings which usually accompany them. Finw Noni'HEitN Virginia.—The news from Northern Virginia is of a character which, possibly, it may bs indiscreet to pub lish. There has been no general engage ment, and the prospect of such an occur rence never was, to all appearances, more distant at any period of the war. Meade is believed to be resting at Cjnlre- ville after tho fatigue or his prodigious ske- daldle. His retreat is considered to have been so masterly as to have dimmed forever the lustre ot the laurels won by McClellan ia that branch of the art of war. He “ fell back ” witb more celerity than Po;>e, and with more success than cither he or McClel lan. Whilst we cannot but admire the suc cess ot his (?:ape, we shall never cease io wonder why he exposed himself in a man ner to make liis flight necessary. It it was his design to lleeasqpon as he was menaced, why did he ever come to the Rapid an ?— One would suppose that froiiP the Rappa hannock to Washington was u sufficiently rong race-track. What his next move will be it is impossible to conjecture. Perhaps, as he was so successful in running away, lie may venture forward again. 11 he does ad vance again towards-the Rapid an, lie can hardly do bo in less than a month, us it wiil take aim at least that time to re construct the Orange qjid Alexandria railroad, which, by the exertions of both armies, has been pretty thoroughly demolished t. om Culpep er <lourt liras-* to Manassas Juhfilion.— Rich. A’mmincr. FnoM Eastern Caroi.ixa:—A eorres- pamient of the Richmond Sentinel, writing from Headquarters near Kinston, N. It may not be gen erally known that Major General Pieactt lias charge of the Department ot North Carolina, which extends from the Appo mattox to Cape Fear river—a very impor tant command, as the entire railroad com munication with the South is under bis pro tection. fcto far as I can see and jodge, eve rything is in good working order, troops are where they should be, and activity and en ergy are visible on all aides. 1 find the people of the old North State willing and ready to do all their power for the cause, and w r e were cheered by the waving ot handkerchiefs all along ths route from Weldon to Goldsboro’. We are treat ed very kindly by all, and it is with peculiar pleasure that I aunounece the fact that some, although sorely pressed by the war, still refuse to take any compensation for what they can spare, but deal it out with a lavish hand to all who make application.— I might add several names to the “ roll of honor,” but fear of giving offence, for men capable ot such deeds are ever unwilling lo have them heralded. The people ot Wilson were in excellent spirit?, occasioned in part by a speech of President Davis, on his .way South. The ladies were very attentive. Driving the waiters of the hotel off, they waited on him th person at his meal. Havinc finished, he was called upon for a speech, with which he. complied, addressing the ladies in a few re marks and in the housewife style. He told them, among other things, “ to take care of their Con federate jnoney, that it would be good in a few days; the washing day is oyer, the clothes are hung on the line to dry; alt that is needed is a little more sunshine.”— The cars moved off oinid the cheering of the crowd and the waving of handkerchiefs by the ladies. Report lurther.says that os cular impressions were freely made and re ceived by the ladies and the President. Armstead’s brigade is now ealled Barton’s brigade. Brig. Gen. 8. M.
