instant death of thirteen of the heroic gar

near the sea wall, in readiness for immedi

This pointful news rebelled the city at an
o.iHy hour Saturday morning, and creati J
a general feeliug of sadness and depression-
iu the community. Tho brave and gallant
men, so suddenly cut off,‘were m<>-;]y na
tives and residents of-this city, and their
deaths hnyc brought mourning to a large
number of households and distressed rela
tives and friend?. The bodies were brought
to (tie city Saturday evening, and taken pos
session of by their respective families. t >n
Sunday afternoon the funerals took place
from tlie various residences of ihc deceased,
tfdtowed by largo crowds of sorrowing rela
tives and sympathising friends.
Tuo scene in Tradd street, where three
luuerul processions followed in succession,
was peculiarly sad aud painful to witness.
The bereaved families lived side by side.
Ol Saturday the.bombardmentVaged tu-

ttiouitors, two heavy and two light rilled
guns at Gregg, three heavy rilled guns aud
tour ten inch mortars at the middle battery,

Burnside held East Tennessee from the Vir
ginia line to the Hiawassie, a distance of
ab-mt 2CO miles, and some of the menials
issued*a few numbers of a newspaper at
Athens, filled with strong appeals and false
assumptions as to the i resent as well as uli i-
timate designs of the invader. From the
prcccetlingf of a Union meeting at xViliens,
v;c were surprised to see that a number oi
persons were silly enough to be gulled ly
the blandishments and false promises of the
tyrants among them, and if their pillows
, for all the future are not filled with thorns,
| it will r.ot be because they do not deserve
1 such a laic, nor for the want ,of a disposition
j 6n the part ot their task masters to iaflict
; and degrade them. The first number ol
j the paper they issued was filled with “raw-
j heud-aud-hloody-bone” stories of the crucl-
j ties of Confederate soldiers to the uaprotcct-
| od, but not a word cl the barbaiities of
| Yankee brutes all over the land. But their
: paper was short lived, for Forrest and his
! command rode in among them, aud Yankee
i iegs soon showed what Fankee legs were
j ulade for. That portion of the country
• thereiorc, from the Tennessee to Hiwassie
is now in our possession.
A great many of the citizens of Tenues
see, it is said, took thy. oath ot allegiance to
(be Lincoln Government. Many of these
arc Southern men, whose sympathies ate all
with the Sou'h, and their weakness was
prompted by the tear of the loss of property
and tho hoped protection. This, however,
is no excuse, and we are neither sorry nor
disappointed to learn that e rery man ce
them, able to perform service, between th
ages of IS and 45, have been put into the
YankcO ranks.
Our forces from this direction are now on
the march westward, and we expect to
know, by the time of our uext issue, that
we will have a cavalry force alouo in Ten
nesses to clear it of the Y r aukee rabble that
now infest it.
