v Wedne.-.U'ay afternoon I visited the
Lnuutio Asylum of the State, in Midway,
id.mt two miles from the capitol. The
iu.il ling, or rather we should say, edifice
oi t'.pied by Uie unfortunate class ol our
popul.ition known as Lunatic*, is an ira-
i n o structure, the largest in the State
iu: length is over ICO yards, while its wings
; in back to nearly the same distance. It
contains upwards of. 309 rooms, every one
of which at present Jtas an occupant. The
r -.si to the State for the building was $3S0,-
000, and cheap at that.
This institution mis long bee a under the
management of I)r. Greene; a gentleman
wc iao proud to s.ty, w ho duly appreciates
ihe responsibility ol the position in which
lie has already won undying honors. Every
thing about the promises and throughout
the institution itself, is kept in the neatest
possible order.
The il >ors which are not carpeted, except
the p.u lor fur visiters, are as clean as wood
can be made, and lia^ a glossy appearance,
'•he result, we suppose, of usiug wax in rub*
oiugtlicm. The walls are hung with every
variety of painting, bearing testimony to

bly convened to-day at 12. At the sixth
ballot Gen. A. It. Wright was elected Presi
dent of the Senate. At the first ballot Capt
L. H. Kenan, of Baldwin county, was elect
ed Secretary.
House—At the first ballot Thos. Harde
man was elected Speaker. L. Carrington
was unanimously re elected .Clerk.

Goudonsville, Oct. 6.—-Five Yankee pri
vates and and one sergeant, were brought
herq to-day. They were cvpturcd at War-
renton yesterday, foragiug. They report
considerable activity among their army, and
say there are no indications of going into
winter quarters.

Greenville. Our forces were pursuing at
Iasi advices, and had crossed the Holstou.

the election come in slowly.
Turner is certertainly elected ova 1 Ar
rington in the Gth district, and. Leach leads
McRae about GOO, with Duplin, and Samp
son to hear lrorn. Leach is 1 bought to bo
elected representative. Leach carried Samp
son. Result not known in the 2d. Yellow r -
by carried Lenoir, Green, Pitte and Wilson.
Edgecomb.and Halifax are to hear from end
will be close.
Chatham and Mcore are reported gone
for Christian three to one. Christian is
thought elected over Ashe. Gilmer is elect
ed in the Glh district without opposition.—

Charleston, November G.—The lire of
the enemy has been from two monitors and
battery Gregg to-day, at intervals of about
15 miuutes. Tbe lire of Gregg has been
principally directed at the southwest cor
ner of Sumter, andjhat of the monitors
against the-eastern pancope. The falling
debris now’ serves in strengthening the fort.
A large number of shots were fired from
sunset Thursday to sunset Friday, 485 of
which missed. The casualties to-day are 2
killed, 1 slightly and 2 severely wounded—
al! of the 27lli Ga. Names not ascertained.
