dignity, and wita none of the venom which
usually charactcii/.ds the criticism, tui this
o.'Hcer, that I know L will afford you plcas-
ure io c HM’oet ha expression that works in-
justice. Vou say, in the- editorial referred
t-», “th it Gnu. Bratj^ iso loader enjoys the
on'i ietienof the army cannot be disputed,
since tt is usur'ed, upon evidence that we
o mnot question, that every Major General
<»i the army exeopt Br.ckinridge and Lieut.
Ge.i Loiigsireet (reiSraiuod by cjasidera-
t oas of personal rielic&cv) united in mem >■
rializing the President lor a chta^e of cetn
m 1.tiers.” Tit a ovideuee ca t bo q tesiioned.
The usajrtioa is not true, as made to you.—
Taero were ten G.morals coannandtud: di
visions at the battle of Chic-imauga Two
of them di l request a change of command
ers, t vo were silent, and six earuesdy urged
the President, to make no change. This
state went is the fact. Id is evidence which
the President possesses, and. which is well
known to nearly every otllcer in this army.
In i hat editorial you further say that the
‘‘division commanders spoke not only their
o.va sentknen s, but represented the army;
and with such feelings between the army
and i's commander, it is impossible that
succes * cm attend that army.” Your coin-
meat would bo just were it true that all the
division cuum-iudo's were favorable to a
change; but m such is not the fact, I amsat-
istlca that you mu mistaken in your com
ment, and equally sa-.istied that Gen. Bragg
oajoys Lne confidence of his troops as fully
as any go ichI i 1 ih * service. It was said
before he went into Kentucky that his troops
had no c mlldence iu him, and would not
tight uuder him. With less than 15.000 of
those troops he met the enemy at Perry ville
and defeated over -t‘3,000 of their number.—
After the retreat Irom Kentucky it was
again urged that Gen. Bragg had forfeited
the confidence of his soldiers. At Murfrees
boro' the same troops, under his lead, by
their daring heroism, defeated double their
number, and wrote one of the fairest pages
iu their couulry’s history. After his army
had been depleted to swell our ranks in
Mississippi, amt he was compelled to leave
Middle Teuucssoe, the cry of want- ot confi
dence was again raised, and demands for his
removal came from every quarter. The an
swer to these was given cm the banks of the
‘‘Rive, of Death,” whtre % 4J,000 of these
t-oops storm aft ie s‘rorg entrenched camps
of the enemy, uud routed 79,000 ot the foe.
Surely, Gcu. Bragg must be a most remarka
ble e untnanikr, if he‘cun force "Yvonpg wi o
hate him to win such victories.
In view of these ft.cts, may wc not well
doubt the assertion ol those who say that he
does not enjoy the couii leue i of his officers
and men ?
You further say, in the strue editorial; —
‘‘But is there no sacrifice that Geu. Bragg
should make?- lie knows the state of feel
ing between hiiusdf and his subordinate 0—
fleers. Will be not, forgetting his owu per
sonal wishes, demand a removal or at least
that another general be appointed to com

Without wailing, after the battle of Chiea-
mauga to ascertain the opinion ot all his
commanders—when he found that a small
number of them were dissatisfied— General
Bragg did wk ; nag, begged the President ia re
tisve him from the command. . He did the same
thing after ike retreat from Kentucky, la vic
tory or retreat, (defeated he has never b#eu,)
he has yielded to the clamor of a part 01 the
press, so tar as to ask to be relieved from a
position which entails from them censure,
and censure only, let his conduct be Unu
which achieves a victory or works a L s;.—
Hecaunut expect, he cannot hope for the
approval ot ali; b. t with a pure patriotism,
he is wifiiug to .sacrifice himself where duty
calls, Whether ihe position be that ot the
cxnm&uder of an army or a private in the
rauks. I ieei satisfied that you will take
pleasure in correcting an error predicated up
on a sertioa uulrue iu point of fact, but 1 can
not expect others who have c pied your ar

on Sociietv.—Mr. Slidell cannot bo very bu
sy now, or be summoned very frequently to
the Tuilleries, for he suends n very consid
erable portion of his liare in the courtyard
of the Grand Hotel. He looks a little blue
and melancholy since his bosom trieiuls Ma-
83ti uud Gwin have gone to England. The
Grand Hotel is an amusing place lo ]#.>k in
at occasionally. It is the treadqu ?rteas ol
the StcessioniBts.tnany of whom have rooms
there in the 4th story, and economizy by go-
ing £ut for their meaLs at cheap restaurants.
Thor y are a number of Northerners there,
but the lines are very closelyrlrawu, and
there is no association, between the two. In
fact, eomo of the Southern ladies, as they
sweup l>y Northerners, scorniutly gather in
their skirts,as though they feared to be eon-,
tamirmted by touch mg even the hem of a
Northerner’s garment.

remarkable. I heard an amiable looking

Gen. Hampton surprised a cavalry camp of
the enemy, within four milt* oi Stevens

aud wounded a number. He’ also captured
four wagons and a cavalry f orge. Our loss
was one killed ami live womuded.
We are informed by a gentleman wIisa

our cavalry attacked the enemy near Ely’s!

A VISIT TO FORT SUMTER.
Fort Sumter was entered by a venture
some party on the night of the 2d iusi. Cap-
tain Ferris, of the Independent Battalion,
with a small boat's crew, rowed stealthiiy
up to the loot of the slope which the de

a corporal remained behind, the others

The fort is badly used up. The sea wall
at present is an utter ruiu. The arches ol
the casemates were some days sinco laid
