3[nce tho official dispatch from General
Pialcett, nnnounaihg the occupation of Suf
folk by Gen. Hanfom, we hare received no
further particulars l>eyond what are con*,
tained in the Petersburg papers ofSstarday
whidi intelligence was derived front passen
gers by the train from Ivor station Friday
evening. Tho fight in the town on Monday
was with a regiment ot negro cavalry-. It
occurred i» flio streets, the negroes dis
mounting after the first fire and flying-in
every direction. Several wore killed in the
streets, and many took shelter in a- vacant
house boyiJnti the limits of tho town on the
east. The house was charged by o«r meo
and all but lour of the* negroes captured!
These refused to surrender, and.the house
wns fired, and when the flames were well
under way, ono camu opt, firing upon out
men, and was killed. The other three
remained and wero consumed in the flames.
Tho caSimand quartermaster’s atorea in the
town and at Bernard’s-mills beyond, were
destroyed, and some fine horses, a piece ot
artillery, and many small arras captured.
We lost three ’killed and n?a v or sir
wounded. It was reported that Gen. Ran
som had-fallen back about nine miles this
aide- oi Suffolk, and on Tuesday firing was
.heard in the direction of Oowling’s lending,
on tho river, two mile3 west of Suffolk Gen.
JRansdm has been reinforced. It was feared
by citizens that the cowardly enemy would
avenge themselves by burning the town on
their return, and many were preparing to-
leave, taking their movable property with
them.—ftkhmond Whig.

Tho Petersburg Express eaya that many
parties in that section are bringing out their
spdoie and spending it in preference to pay
ing the high prices with Confederate money.
In .this way they get.their goods at ante

IurnK93!itKsr or Nsoroks—Tits Toombs
Case.—It was weently stated in the En
quirer-oi this city, upon the authority of a
correspondent from Stewart county, that iu
the Toombs case the court decided the late
impressment of slaves to labor on fortifica
tions to be illegal. The statement, we are
-satisfied/ is incorrect, it having been made,
no doubt, by a correspondent unacquainted
with the legal proceedings. The facts as we
understand diem, are about theso; Owing
to a failure of tbe counsel for tho impress
ing officer to produce any legally admissi
ble evidence of authority, thb question did
not come up on its merits. It appeared in,
tho absence of proof—that negroes belong
ing to Gen. Toombs were improperly and
without authority in the possession' of the
ahoriff; and without any diaoussion or do- „
cision on tha impressment lavr, the negroes
were returned to hint— Gblvmbv? Sun.
John A. Itoebling, the engineer
of the Niagara suspension bridge, .proposes
to build a bridge between tire cities of New
York and Brooklyn. Tbe superstructure of
the bridge would form anarch about two
miles long, clearing the. waters of the East
river in one sweep of 1,000 to 1,800 feat
span, and oxtending over the houses of both
cities, in n varies of smaller spans whose
length would be gradually diminished fro©
