HbWTLY DnoXX'NEU.
The season for batliiug bciDg now on us,
the following instructions for the restora
tion of the apparently drowned, may h
appropriately published, and wo would
advise persons residing near the water, iu
particular, to preserve them. They arc
baaed ott tbo methods ot Dr. Marshall, Hull
and Dr. II. E Sylvcalor, and were published
last year by ibe Royal Life Boat Institution
ot London, in the form ol a large sheet
with wood-cuts, and extensively posted and
distributed in Koglaud.
DIRECT rOKS,
1 Send immediately for medical satis
tanco, blankets, dry clothing, but iu the
meantime treat the patient instantly on the
spat, in the open air, with the face down
ward ; exposlug the lacc, nock and chest to
the wind, except in Bevero weather, ami
removing all tight clothing from the neck
and chost, especially the suspenders.
Tbe points to be aimed at arc, first im
mediately, the restoration ot breathing;
and secondly, after breathing is restored,
tbe promotion of warmth and circulation.
The drat must bo done immediately and
energetically, and persevered iu for an hour
or two, or until a medical mau has pro
nounced life extinct. The second, bjyoud
removing the wet clothes and drying the
skin, muBt not be made until tho first up
pearauce oi natural breathing, othenvt.-o it
would endanger the restoration of life.
2. To reatoro breathing. 1’lace the pa
tient on the floor or ground, with the lane
downwards and one of the arms under the
forehead, in which position all fluids will
more readily escape ti ont the mouth, aud
tbe loiigue itself will tail im tvardy-'ieavliig-r
the entrance of the windpipe free. Wipe
aud cleanse the mouth from mud, &c. If
satisfactory breathing commences, use the
treatment described below lor promoting
warmth. II the'breathing is imperfect, or
fails, then, to excite breathing, turn the
patient well and instautly on his side, sup
porting tbe head, and excite the nostri s
with snuff, hartshorn, die., nr tickle the
throat with u leather, rub tbe fact ami
chest warm, and dash cold water, or cold
und hot water alternately on them, il there
be no success, lose not a moment, but In-
Htunlly, to initiate breathing, replace the
patient on tbo face, raising or supporting
tbe chest well on a folded doth or other
article of dress. Turn the body very gently
on the sido, and a little beyond, and then
briskly on tbe face again. Repeal this ope
ration cautiously amt persavoringly at the
rate ot about fifteen times a minute, occa
sionally vary lag the side. (Placing on tho
chest lores out tlm air; ttyning on tbo
side makes it enter the chest.) Every time
tbe body is replaced on the lace, press
briskly aud unit truly on the back, between
und below ilia shoulder blades, removing
tbo pressure immediately before turning the
body ou the side.
During thb above operations, dry tlm
hands and tcetaud strip tho body und re-
elothe or cover it, but so as not to interfere
with the efforts to restore breathing,
if. Should these efforts not prove succesp-
fitl in the course of from two to five min
utes, proceed to imitate bieatliing by Dr.
Sylvester’s method, as follows: Pih<—. the
patient on the buck on a list surface, in
clined a little upwards from tbe fee'.; raise
and support the shoulders on a small cush
ion or folded article ot dress placed under
the shoulder-blades; draw forward tbe pa
tient's tuugueand keep it projecting b qond
tbe lips. An elastic band or string tied
ovcrihu tongue, and ituder the chin will
answer the purpose. Remove all tight
clothing from neck aud chest, especially the
suspenders. To imitate thu nmvomeul ol
brealUlug, standing at tlm pattern's head,
gra9p the arms just altove the elbows ami
draw them geutly and steadily upward
Above tbo bead, keep them stretched up
ward for two stcmds; (by this meaus air
is drawn into the lung",) then -turn dowu
the patient's arras .and press thorn gently'
ami firmly lor two seconds against tbe sides
of tbe chest. (By this meaus air is pressed
out ot the lunge.) Repeat thu operation
steadily, at the rate of about UUeon limes iu
» minute, until a spontaneous tffjrt to re
spire is perceived, immediately upon which
cease to imitnlo thu movements ot breath
ing and proceed to induce chcululion und
warmth.
4. To promote warim.lt and circulation,
commence to rub the limbs upwards, with
lirm, grasping pressure and energy, using
handkerchiefs, tl-tuuels, etc., (thus pmpcliiug
lltc blood along the veins towards Ibe heart.)
The friction must lie continued under the
blanket or over the dry clothing. Promote
the watni'k of the body by application of
hot llaunclH, bottles of hot water, lieutod
bricks, etc., to the pit of the stouiueii, - the
armpits, between lltu thighs, aud (lie sides
ot the feet.
It the palleut lias been curled to a house
after respiration has luen restored, be care
ful to let the air play freely about the room.
On tbo renter itlon of lift, give a teaspoon-
lui of warm water, ami It the power ol
Hwallowiiig has relumed, email quantities
ot wine, warm brandy ami water, or cdk-e.
Keep Ibe patient iu lied and encourage
sleep.
Tito above treatment should lie perse
vered in tor some hours, as it iu au errone
ous opinion that persons are irrecoverable
because lltc does not soon make Us appear
ance, persons having been restored alter
persevering for many hours.
(Jimtions.—Proveut unnecessary crowd
ing of persons round thu body, especially
it in an apartment. Avoid rough usage,
aud do uot allow the body to remain on its
tuck unless the tongue is secured
no circumstances hold the body up by the
feet. Ou no nccount place tbe body in a
warm bath, unless under medical direction
and even l liun it should only be employed
as a momentary excitant.
The same treatment can bo applied iu
other cases of asphyxia, ns when respira
tion lias been suspended by strangulation,
by foul air in wells or privies, by the fumes
ot charcoal, etc., whilst waiting for the ar
rival of a physician.
