in tills way, and the only matter for astonish
ment is that he was not killed long before. Ho
was constantly on the' most .advanced-- lino of
skirmishers, cheering them on, the most conspic

when warned agaiust such on exposure of him
self, ami said ihat ho was not afraid • of any hail
“aimed at him;" but 1 know tlint he uover ex

plored its existence, and said one day, "I Wahid
isr down my right hand and have it cut off at
the wrist to end it.” But he was conscientious
in his esjiousal of the Southern cause, and was
ready to die for it.
Neither In him nor in any other leader of emi
nence on the. Southern side did I observe any
rancor. It was only at rare interval! thut any
expressions of indignation escaped. - him. The
habitual temper of his mind toward llty adversa
ries was cool and soldierly. Federal prisoners were
treated bv him with courtesy, (um oftert felt his
headquarters declaring that they would' 'fiever
forget the kindness they bail experienced. I re
member an ap|>cal once made to him ’by a pris
oner which Btimscd everybody. One' of his es
cort spoke roughly to the prisoner, when the lat
ter seeing the General pass, exclaimed: “Gene-
mi Stuart, I did notcoine horc to be black-guard-

and reprimanded the person who hail addressed
the prisoner. When old acquaintances, or offi
cers wlio could give him news of former army
friends, were captured, lie treated them with the
greatest courtesy, gave them tiie best ltis table
could furnish, mid seemed to enjoy their conver
sation greatly. •- , -1 - .
I hare mentioned ltis constant exposure of
himself Numberless instances could be given of
this; his escapes were, indeed,.very .frcmiohily,
wonderful. At Sbnrpsburg lie galloped along
the front of a Federal regiment, and received the
tire of the entire regiment nt about twenty-five
yards, escaping; without a scratch. At Freder
icksburg lie kept his position in front of his ar
tillery, though bnll' after hall, only- half: spent
struck him, ami one cut oiT a lock Of his hair,
and another passed through the collar of ltis
coot. On many other occasion be remained in
exposed positions until ho was forced to gallop
oil tinder a shower of bullets. It was in the
neglect of ordinary precautions, in,the immedi
ate vicinity of the enemy, that his recklessness
was shown most clearly. At Vcrdiersville, in
August, 1863, he stopped at a deserted house on
the roadside and lay down with his. staff escort,
without vhlettes, pickets, or other precaution.
The conseqaence was that he was, aroused, by
the tramp of Federal cavalry does on him; ami
had just time to throw himself, hatless, on his
unbridled horse, leap the -fence and’fly. He left
Ids hut, cont and gloves, which Ills adversaries

roving, adventurous habitudes seemed to have
strong attraction for hint.'and lie would never
hesitate to ride outside of his line to see a lady, or
call at a honsewherefriendswere. Tliesemarks
of friendly rememberance made hint a prime fa
vorite with young Indies, who were not seldom,
indeed, laughed nt for their propensity to “follow

young lady of Fairfax Court House, the conse
quences were unfortunate and yet amusing. Ar
rested by the Federal authorities for supposed
eomplieity iu a surprise by partisans, this lady’s
trank wus searched; her commission as aid-de-
camp, signed duly and officially by Stuart, dis
covered; and this paper wwoctnalty regarded
m an evidence of a secret understanding with
the authorities at Richmond.
The young ladies everywhere were ltis strong
friends, as I have said, and made him their “hero
of romance." This was natural, if not very de
sirable. It was a gallant flgure'wliich moved be
fore them, with the bright hluo eyes, the gal

Stuart was no Imtger the ga/ irJoiuiant trifle/,
