were both «o plainly ouected that Judgment of
eharaoteP-Wte for that time out of tho question.
The groupz inside the house, before which ev
ery foot of space for hundreds of yards in either
direction was coveted with humsn life, would
lmvo told; plainly, though they had been dumb,
what manner of man he was whom they Were

That man, silently ciylng by.himself in a corner,
and wiping his reddenedeyesfrom time to time
on a white handkerchief, which, in his agitation,
he has forgotten to unfold, to Harry Brunton, the
chosen squire of poor Tom. for whom, as indeed
for anybody elso who appealed to him in friend

qnietly aloof in tho comfortable room, ahd look-

Langbam, tbo. only boxer before whoso terrible
clumping blows and long Unerring reach of arm
Sayers ever succumbed. Jemmy Welsh, too, to
there; and another frlond invited to follow poor
Tom's body to its last resting place to Mr. War

few persons by whose fore-thought and probity
the little fortune of the careless pugilist was saved
from shipwreck; . Itmaybe somo interest to the
public at large to know. that, even the declining
attractions of the oifctn : of tfhlch the deceases

a posltlvo loss to him. Lucky, indeed, was he to
escapo, and even to come ofreash in hand from
such a venture. Mr. Thomas Sayers—for the
principal of an establishment paying large week
ly sums in salaries to artists and others, cannot
be spoken of in that character as “Tom"—Mr.

Before tho plumod heftrse, which Was drawn
by four horses, went a band of music, engaged,
as it appeared, to play the Dead March in Saul,
continually nil the way to the cemetery gates,
and anything cheerftd and varied on the way
back. After tbo hearse came a rather welt
kppw^ vehicle, in which poor Tom Sayers, ac
companied by a noble dog of the mastiff breed,
used to spin about town, atawfl by a light dun
pony, and embellished with a profusion of silver
plating and a tug of imitation leopard skin.—
The rather well known vehlole—a slender four-
wheeled species of pluotom wlth the two seats
pkced)W<to»-h&dft black velvet pall thrown
ovarttbp'dividing mill and the dog, ikying at
fbll length on the hinder seat; rested ms grand
head and broad ears and drooping dew-lap on
the soft sable drapery, furnishing forth a picture
that Sir Edwin ralgut'EriAko a pllgrlmage to
paint The dun pony had likewise a black vel
vet boosing, pall-fashioned, with the ghastly
wblto border! * * > * * *
Six black coaches followed, in the first of
which were tho two children of Sayers, and af
ter the coaches were aft sorts and conditions of
cabs and brick carts, filled with hodmen and
bricklayers, and such as labor that-houses might
be built for the increased population to live in.
It was to the bricklayers'brotherhood, bo it re
membered. that Tom n«ver shamed to belong,
even after he had become aridUarwlthrecondito
"taps,” which were in great part the death of
him. Next to tho overwhelming-proportion of
dusty white flannel Jaekcta-and r corduroy suits
in the populace on both sides' of the iway, and
in the wake and rear of the pjrOcession was 'no-
tlcable the numbor of ubn-commissloned offi
cers and privates in tho regiments of Life Quards
and the Blues. At the cross of five roads by tho
Britannia Tarcm, carriages of all descriptions
.were closely ranged as on a race course. Tho
KettttoStant road wsd densely thronged, and
many of the fttces were unmistakably thoso of
figbuog men. A neat little gig, standing by the
wayside, contained two or three spectators, cue
of whom who stood up and looked very much
like a captain of lancers, was pointed out as
Tom King.
