ing the order of the Secretary of War to pay off
parties who worked on the Western & Atlantic
lialiroau, under Glenn In June and July last.—

Acknowledgment.—^Wc uro requested by
(lie Wanlens and Vestry of St. Philip’s Church,
to extend their grateflll acknowledgments to the
pastor ami congregration of tlio Central Prcshy-
tcrian Church, for tlie frequent use of their church
edifice while deprived of their own place of
worship. Such acta of Christian charity will not
noon he forgotten. They also dcsiro to acknowl
edge the donation, by Mr. P. M. Richardson, of
a fine stove; also, one from Mr. T. W. McArtlior.
The editor of Scott’s Monthly Magazine
requests ua to say that the Magazine may be ltnd
of the principal book dealers in Atlanta, Macon,
Augusta, Columbus and Montgomery. It is
hoped our people will encourage this effort on
the part of Dr. Scott to establish a Southern
magazine of first-rate merit..
Information deemed reliable has reached our
police that may lead to the detection of the mur
derers of our lamented fellow-citizen James R.
Crew. We forbear further mention until the
lhcts are developed.
The fine oysters and coffee at the Blue
House Restaurant arc positively irresistible, as
all will find upon trying them. It is a first-class
eating house, where business men and others may
enjoy a quiet dinner, and such a dinner as no
other house in this city offers. The location Is
convenient—only a few steps from the car-sited—
and two doors from Masonic Hall.
A splendid Colt’s Repeater may lie had at
the new Hardware store of H. C. Barrow, corner
of Alabama street. Gen. Stevenson having la
med an order allowing all citizens to carry fire
arms In self-defenBC, it would bo well for our peo
ple to prepare themselves. In the present dis
ordered state of society It is proper enough for
every man to go armed. Call upon II. C. Bar-
row—he can fix you up.
The Macon Trleobaph says Major General
Steadman, U. S. - A., leaves the department of
Georgia, we learn, with a view to return to civil
pursuits. Mqj. Gen. J. H. Wilson left this city
un Sunday night for Augusta to take command
ol the Department for a short time. He goes
soon North on p have of absence, which, doubt
less, will be particularly agreeable to him. Gen.
Wilsou bos proven himself an efficient officer in.
looking after every matter properly belonging to
his department. lias given general satisfaction.
Ile'lms spent several months here and is acquaint
ed with tho sentiments and wants of the people.
The Government could do no better out of its
many officers, long as the military, remain
amongst u*, than to return hint to tho depart
ment of Georgia. Colonel A. R. T. Dawson suc
ceeds General Wilson In command of the Dis
trict of Columbus till relieved by Col. Adams, his
senior officer.
The Herald!* Washington special says it is
stated beyond a probability of contradiction,
that at the Cabinet meeting yesterday, it \yns de
cided that Mr. Mallory, ex-Secretary of tho rebel
navy, now in confinement in Fort Lafayette,
should be tried by civil tribunal within the next
30 days. It is understood that the matter was
brought up for decision by reason of the efforts
that luvo recently been made by the family con
nections of Mr. Mallory to obtain his release on
paijile.
The election-of Mr. Hoffinan to the office of
Mayor of New York, Is a fortunate decision for
that city. His Integrity, courage and ability aro
equal to the diffieolt duties wblch devolve upon
him. All the Greeley-Wood coalition could not
delude the Democracy. They knew their candi
date and resolved he should be elected.—Rt.

Scenes in Monn.ts.—A Mobllo correspondent 1
of the Cincinnati Ornette says:
“Last spring Mobile was was a cliv of ruins,
warehouses nilned by ‘the great explosion,’ mer-
chauts ruined by tho wAr, politicians ruined by
the abject defeat, women bankrupt in heart and
hope. I had not aeon It since till tlio other day,
emerging from the chaotic interior. One rubbed
hia eyes ns ho. was whirled, through tho bustling
streets to bo assured that he was not deceived by
an unsubstantial vision. Warehouses were rising,
torpedoes had been’removed from the harbor,
and a fleet of sail and steam vessels lined the re
pairedI wharves. The’uow blood of the South’
was of a truth leaping in right riotous pulsations
through tho veins Of tho la9t captured city of tho
“Everywhere in tho throng of cotton buybrs,
around the reeking bars, at the public tables, in
the crowded places of amusement—two classes
.crowded and commingled—northern speculators
and rebel soldiers. For exatnplo, single rooms
nt the hotel were out of the question, and I re
ceived n jolly fellow who looked as if ho might
tie magnificent In a charge—on the breakfast ta
ble—as my room-tuste. Jle turned out to have
been a chief of staff to a conspicuous Southern
General. I fell Into a. conversation with my
neighbor at dinner, which soon drifted from re
quests for the mustard Into a discussion of the
claims of Southern ‘members’ to seats in Con-
css. Bv and by he casually mentioned that he
id been In the rebel service, which might.intcr-
ferc with his taking the test oath!
Tiie Wars of Nicholas.—The consumption
or human life during the reign of Nicholas, late
Emperor of Russia, was enormous. He carried
on war with tho Circassians uninterruptedly for
twenty-eight years, at an annual cOst oi 26,000
Uvea on the Russian side alone, making a grand
totnl of nearly 000,000 who perished in attempt
ing to subdue the independence of Circassia. In
tlio two campaigns against Persia, tho Hunga
rian campaign and the two Polish campaigns
of 1881-32, there are not sufficient data to form
a correct idea of the loss of the Russians, which
was, however., exceedingly great. In the two
campaigns of 1828-20 against Turkey, there fell
200,0OO, of whom 60,000 perished by the plague.
The loss of the Russians in various other ways
is understated at 30,000. In these calculations,
it should be borne in mind that no cstimntu is
attempted to he made of the sacrifice of human
life on the side of those who fought for their lib
erties against tho aggressions of Russia.
