Tlic ueittoat wootlru building that ban been
creeled here since the rc-bulldlng of Atlnntn
oumtncucctl, la the new atable ol tlio Southern
Kxpresa 06»ptny. It stands upon what la gene
rally known as Railroad street, and has Just been
completed. The Interior arrangement Is vety
tasteful, reflecting alike credit upon the architect
and tho energy of the Company. The stalls nro
models in their way, with noat “turned’ 1 jxteU,
and nrc thirteen in number. On each sldo of
the entrance is a room, one for the hostler In
dmigo, and the . other to be used os n harness-
make* room. In addition to these, there is a
lorsgu room,.pump' anil 'watcr-frouglt, with an
admlraWy arranged placo to wash oB the wagons.
We are not apprised of the precise dimensions
of this cstablishmtfflt. but itls sufficiently capa
cious to shelter sixteen horses anil to glyo room
for all the vehicles used by the company in this
city. Thoirwork requires sixteen horses, and
the heavy duty performed by this Express stock
entitles them to the stflhnlatlon that Is secured by
the erection of tho above building. Adjoining
the stable is a lot whom the stock may run^nt
large. Altogether, this uotv stable is quite n one-
cess, and furnishes another evetdenco of tho en
ergy of tho Southern Express Company, and of
the thorough business ideas of B. llultiurt, Ksq.,
who has the manitgeincnt ol this Division.

An enterprising freedman dashed into the store
of Messrs. Hlrshbcig, Loch & Co., on Whitehall
street, just at dusk on Wednesday evening, and
appropriated about nine bolts of d’lnlne goods,
and succeeded in making his escape with them,
lie entered the store at a moment when the pro
prietors and clerks were nt tho back cml engaged
in marking theirnew spring stock, nmi not boing
servo! promptly concluded to'help himself in the
above unceremonious manner. He was after
wards apprehended and a part of the goods re
covered, though a general distribution hnil been
made nmong his colored brethren of the female
persuasion. Wc regret that their hopes of coin
ing out in uetv spring dresses nrc thus cut short,
but they should select a cavalier who can per
form operations of this diameter in a more "pro-
lessional” manner. We hope Judgo Dunning
will demonstrate to this erring freedman that
stealing may be an exceedingly profitable busi
ness Inn that it is at the same time u highly rep
rehensible one. So far as information hits readi
ed us, such cases when brought before him are
vigorously dealt with.

As the lNTKl.uoKNCRit hits an abiding placo
on Alalmnui street, It claims the right to make
an occasional suggestion, If not to utter a positfvo
complaint, when things don't go*exactly right in
its locality. There is a vast’ heap of rubbish In
front of the Franklin Building that should be re
moved. The buildings havo been completed lor
some time, and there exists no reason why that
unsightly mass ol rubbish should longer mar tho
licauty of this solid business street. It ^stands
there an “eye-*ore,",,of which there Is a gencrnl
complaint, and if it devolves upon tho City Fath
ers to cause Its removal, it is hoped they will
promptly “limbor up" thnt battery of scavenger
carts mid turn loose upon it. The Intelligen
cer feels proud of thomojesiic proportions Ala-
hints street has assumed since the completion of
its new buildings, and will insist upon the speedy
removal of unytliing and everything that can de
tract from its beauty and comeliness. *

There has been a lively enquiry for com in this
