Indeed, wo have lto donbt that they will, as the Wixsitip’s enjoy a popularity and reputation in this city and abroad which may well be envied by their competitors in business, lion ever worth? and enterprising they maybe. Having antlered much by (lie calamities of war, and the destruction of this city, to whose (br umes they clung to the Iasi, we trust that they will enjoy a reluming prosperity, find soon re cover what they have lost. Wo cannot loo buddy commend this enterprising and reliable mechanical firm to the confidence ol'llid public. Uecllno of Gold. The following ideas are advanced by the Wa-liingloa Intelligencer Ifi regard to the present doaaward tendency in gold, and its effect upon iraile: “The premium has declined to idiom lliir- ty ihree per cent., find is likely to fall, ns it did last spring, to thirty or lower. The Secretary of the Treasury is reported to have said that lie could easily cause a litrllicr decline; hut the fall, during the last week, was without any exercise of his power over tlie market. No gold lias been sold by Ho' Treasury for a week past, though, during the previous week, the sum ol twelve million was pat into the market. The Treasury -till commands a large amount of gold. .Money is so abundant in the commercial cen tres that speculation flourishes though regular business is at a stand. Speculation In the city of New York has (or a week past been di rected strongly to rcnl estate at advancing prices, the auction sales amounting to a quarter of a million of dollars a day. This shows not only the abundance of money, lint Hie want of employment for it in any tegular business. Many pontons marvel nt )lto fact tliut the prices of living are still maintained at tlie same rate which prevailed when gold was 200. An actual scarcity of rninmnditicg caused by dimin ished production and suddenly Increasing con sumption; 1ms been and still Is among the causes "I high prices, ns well ns the redundancy ol pa per currency. Bat prices tend downwards, and mti't decline very sensibly, even without any rc- fereiiee to the success of any scheme of contrite- hm. Hundreds of thousands of men, lately in aims, mill large consumers, must now .become producers, an^ besides these, the vast*current of immigration brings daily neressionslootirincana "f production. Dry goals, both foreign nnd domestic, Imre fdlcn heavily—wholesale prices having declined per cent.—during the past week. The South ern demand for goods, which was so brisk during a few months following thy close of the war, lma suli-itled, and the supply has exceeded the means "I payment. Tho South hint nearly exhausted the resources which renmlnctl to It, after the war, in cotton, tobacco, naval stoics, etc., and the prospect of production for 18(111-7 is fur from lin ing good. Some business men anticipate a general decline ol prices, and ns a consequence of it, a contrac tion of hank loans which will fall with severity u|wni huik debtors. Hanks arc generally in- '•reusing instead of diminishing their loans. The loin line of the New York city honk* before (lie war was a hundred and twenty lnlllions, and it is limv two hundred mid forty millions, though I' -dtlinato husUtCBH is falling otf. When the bmks shall, from prudential reasons, contract their loan line, everything upon which these loans nre based will suffer a great decline in price." James Isii *d President of the (ti Laurence Oa, Just« mWw— But tho murderer, In spite or tho large rownnls tlmt were offered, nml the most vigorous scnrcli, was undiscovered. On the (1th of last August, a man who gave his name ns “ Scratch Gravel," wns nrrested in Now Hampshire, on tho chnrgo of a burglary committed lu Gardner, Massachusetts, tho dny before. " Scratch Gravel" was taken to a jail in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and his conduct then nml tho words he let drop, tended to confirm the rising suspicion of Sheriff Wetlicrblo tlmt lie was guilty of tho ltoxbury murder. Scrnteli Gravel wns removed to the StAtc Pri son, nt Charleston, to serve out a term of three years. The knowledge of tho suspicious circum stances connected with tho man wore told to Hon. Gideon Haynes, tho Warden of the State Prison, nml after much consideration, a plan was adopted hi draw Author confessions from tho prisoner. It is the custom iu the prison to employ a num ber of prisoners iu sweeping and uustiug tlie wings, while tlie other prisoners arc nbsent from tlie cells. These prisoners nre allowed many privileges, being selected usunlly on account of good behavior; nml as tlioy generally finish llieir work nt about tlircu o'clock in the afternoon, tho time rciunlnlng, previous to tho return of the oilier prisoners Irom tho work shops, they nre alt lowed to occupy in communication wllli c&ch other. Accordingly “ Scratch,” as lie was known at the prison, was taken from the whip shop, in which lie had been placed, and assigned to duty in tlie wings. Tlie next purl of tlie plan was to obtain a trust worthy nnd competent person, who should enler tlie prison as a convict, bo placed on duty with "Scratch," and by gaining Ids confidence, to elicit tlie desired information. A Citium of Filch- burg was lomitl, who, for the sake ol justice, en dured the "one day solitary," the bread and water diet, the manacles, and present disgraco of a prison life. For good bebarior lie wns in two or three days assigned to duty In tlie wings. Adopt ing tlie nnmo of Sciumos, nnd boostiug of a con} ncctlon with tho pirate of that name, the new comer soon made tlie acquaintance of "Hcnitrh,” mid gained ills confidence by proposing a plan ofcscano. Finnlly “Sommoa" looked "Scraicli" squarely In the eye, nnd asked him if lie was guilty of tlie ltoxbury murder. "Scratch" quickly answered "No,” and then added, "If I was out ol tills d~d State I wouldn’t mind telling; bill Imw ■jo I know but there tiro detectives here in tills very prison; nnd ifl tell, the detectives Will go out, and I slmll lie locked up." Scmmcs could extract no uinni definite Intor- nintimi (rum him, ami was therefore released. It was not until Wednesday Inst tlmt conclusive evidence wns given to him thnt he wns sns|iccted of tlie foul crime at ltoxbury. On. tlmt day Warden Haynes held a conversation with him in respect to liU past life nml history. In reply to questions tlie prisoner staled tlmt ho lmd never been in Massncliustls, and know no one them; tlmt lie was in New York Shite nil of last May, nnd In Connecticut during tho latter part of June. Tlie Warden saying to hint that his uucstion was a proper one, "Scratch," replied, "I know whnt you want. Yon think I murdered tlie Itoxbmy children.” Thu Warden told him that ho was sui|icctdd of that crime, nnd that It would lie lor hla own Interest to show where lie.wna during tlie first part or June.
