Mynatt and MaJ. George Hlllyor for the defense,

was of opinion that he had not the authority to

The case will be continued in tho Superior Court.
The Ualu of Yesterday
Wns perhaps the heaviest thnt lias fallen upon
this rlty for yenrs. On the previous day and
night, the showers were heavy and Iroquent, but
the climax was reached yesterday morning when
the rain came down very much in tho manner It
did when father Nonh found his ark so useful—
Far several hours we cqjoyed the ftill effect of n
regular deluge. We hope the bridges above may
escape damage.
“ Hope Deferred.”
A young nud interesting lady passed through
our city yesterday, returning to her home in Tex
as. She wns led to the niter during the second
year of the war by a gallant captain in a Texas
regiment, who left her to rejoin bis command in
Virginia ere tire honey-moon hnd waned. Ills
career was an honorable one, and in her fur-off
home her heart had been made to swell while
Lis deeds of valor were being recounted by his
comrades. But few leaves of absence were giv
en irt the Army of Northern Virginia to Texans,
uml our captain was not (rcrmitlcd to return to
the rosy bowers where lovo awaited lihu Ills
devotion to duty krtew no abatement, ami ho
was still found among the faithful few when the
end came. Hois known to have surrendered
with the Texas brigade at Appomattox Court
House, and to have started lairly upon the wings
of love to meet the woman ol his choice. Farth
er limn this nothing is known of him. Ollier
hearts have lieen made glad by the return of nb-
wail ouch, but that great agony of auspense bus
yet to tic lilted Iroin the heart of tho fair
lexas bride, l/nablc nny longer to quietly bear
the torture of doubt and uncertainty, aho re
solved upon a mission of enquiry after the one
whose fate still remnins a mystery. Her soarcli
has extended from Texas to Virginia, and no ef-
lort has been spared to discover the probable
came of his lengthened stny; and whllo her
tearch has lieen fruitless, hhc is ready to wager
her future hope* ot Heaven tliut if living he Is
faithful still, and If dead her inline was mingled
with his latest hrenllt. She returns to her home
in Texas with a mountain weight of sorrow press
ing heavily upon her fair young brow. Such
Udeliiy is never rewarded In tills life j in that
other world where sorrow is not known will hIio
liii’l eniiqieiuatlon for the deep uuil poignant
griefs she hus home so uncomplainingly in this.
