m gif figg gutofflflmro. TX BqiHiMt *t<l«wnr. An nBfonsdowi Uotlmouy to the divine in dwelling <H>.***iooalljr exhibit* itself in a strange —ye*, In lenrftil forme; for It 1* contrasted with strange and fearful forme of suffering. I can never listen to the singing of oofne of the hymns of Cowper without a thrill ot reverence for the grace of God which could work so mightily In a diseased soul. Some of Oowper's most affect ing lyrics, to which millions or Christian hearts have turned lovingly, as to the most trathfbl ex- R rcsskm of their own experience which they ave ever found, except In the Ftalmi of David, were composed during those eleven years in which, aa he tells us, not a solitary moment of hope of hta own salvation ever cheered bis soul. By those rivers of Babylon he sat down and wept; and his wailings have been heard In thou sands of the sanctuaries of Zion to-day. Oil, mystery of grace—that regenerating love should thus gleam out and make radiant the path of sympathising beholders, when not a ray of It could find Ingreea to the bleared and swollen eye of the unconscious believer I May we venture to probe the mystery if Can it he the otyect of such a phenomenon to give to the universe a monument of God'a triumph over Satan, in a conflict the severity of which eubmer- get weak human nature to depths which light cannot pierce ? In the shock ana struggle of that warfare, in which the supremacy over man's soul la contested by unseen belligerents, may it not be that God sometimes suspends the hiding uf his power, and lays out the forces of his will in mgjesty which the human consciousness cannot bear to took upon? Shall man we God in such conflicts and lire? But the reflex influence of such experience upon the usefulness of tho be liever is more intelligible. I have heard it said by one, the fragrance of whoee memory yet fills this place, that “no man could be qualified to write a commentary on the Psalms of David who had not kuown some great sorrow.” So, when God regenerates a chosen one who is to bccomo dear to the hearts ot many generations, the secret method of grace sometimes is to workout tho change by processes which shall disclose its rea lity to all minds but his. To him the volume is sealed until the time of the end. Yet his tremu lous flugcra have written lu that the scriptures might be fulfilled: " I will lead the blind by a way they know not: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.” Even upon the insane experience of such a soul we may reasonably found our faith in the divinity of the power which dwells in it. Wo turn from the testimony of such a one in his despair, to his testimony as we doubt not he re hearses it to awe-struck angels. “ Poor Cowper," as thy Wends used to call then—“our guide, our teacher, our brother,” rather would we name thee —what thiukest thou now of God’s dealings with thy soul? Dost thou hot now understand those mysterious eleven years ? Was it not worth eleven years of sorrow to bo thus enabled to ex press some of the experiences of God's peoplo In all coming time? Was it not worth eleven yean of conflict to bo thus disciplined as tho witness of God to unborn millions, among whom this shall be told as a memorial qt thee ? Was it not worth eleven years of bondage to the powere of darkness to bo thus led to the composition of one such song oi Zion as that In which thou hast taught us that “ God moves lu a mysterious way ? ” Was it not worth eleven years of despair to be thus moved by the throes of thine own an guish to assure alt other believers, as thou hnst done, that, “There it a fountain filled with blood? " Dost thou not now see that when tbou didst say for our comfort, “Then, In s nobler, tweeter long, I'll elng thy power io savo,” thou didst speak words of unconscious pro phecy?—Dr. AuttinPhclpt, in Bibliotheca Sacra.
