Theatrical Enterprise.
The fine lmll in the Bell and Johnson Imildiug,
corner of Broad and Alabama streets, has been
leased tor one year by Messrs. S. II. Hubbard and
V J. Nelson, who propose to open it on the 15th
],f September with a lirst class Dramatic Compa
ny The hall will accommodate eight hundred
persons, and is to he fitted up in good style by the
owners. The seals are to be arranged in amphi
theatre style, and a real tasty place fitted tip for
the amusement of our citizens next whiter. It
is the purpose of Messrs, Hubbard amt Nelson
in engage for their company only artists ol ac
knowledged ability, and to place upon the stage
nothing of an objectionable character. The
sum of |1,500 will be necessary to procure the
stage fixtures, scenery, &&, anil they will call
upon the citizens to subscribe small amounts for
that purpose. For the sum subscribed tin equiv
alent in tickets to the performances will be given.
For instance, whoever subscribes $3, that iiuln-
lier of tickets will be given, to be used when the
theatre is thrown open. A lew gentlemeu have
already put their names down lor various sums
ranging from $10 to $50. The money is to he
placed in the hands of some reliable person to be
designated by the parties subscribing. Unless
tliUnrrangement is carried into ellcel, theclmnees
are that our city will be without amusements of
thU character next winter, and we can ill afford
to do without chaste theatrical performances
when they are thus placed within our reach.—
We hope,'therefore, that the stmt these gentlemen
a-k for will he furnished them, and the enter
prise lie pushed on to success.

The Host Machine for Packing Cotton
IN TIIB WORLD!
1. Ith SiMPUctTT.—It i« a now and improrod applica
tion or thu Bcitew Powbk—just a* simple in its construc
tion ns tho old-fashioned wooden scruw, as easily man*
ag'-'d, nnd no morn llahlo to get out of order. No ropes
or piiltien arc used in tho Cotton Presses.
2. Its Econo nt.—It has been demonstrated by actual
experiment to be cheaper than tho wooden acrew. The
timbers used in ita construction are much smaller and
fewer than those employed in the old screw; the levers
being only iff feet long, and the bight of the whole frame
above the bed being only 10 feet. All these timbers can
bo procured on the plantation, no matter how exhausted
tho forurit. Any ordinary wood workman can build the
frame, and half-a-dozen hands will put It up in a few
hours.
3. Its Durability.—The Screw and Nut are of Iron,
and will Inst for years without any appreciable wear. The
whole machine occupies so little space that it can be com
pletely covered at very small cost.
4. Its Powbr.—With a lever only 10 feet long, one
mule is sufficient for packing tho heaviest bales. Plan
ters who have used It say that with two mules cotton may
he compressed on this machine lor shipment.
This screw was invented Just before the opening of tho
war, aud hns subsequently never been generally intro
duced. Those who have used It and soon it used, unani
mously concur in the opinion that it Is
Unrivalled as a Cotton Sorew!
The following testimonials, from some of tho best aud
most reputable plauters lu the country, show the estimate
in which this Screw stands with those who have tried It:
We have used aud seen In operation for the last live
years, “Wright’s Improved Cotton Iron Screw,” aud feel
uo hesitation in pronouncing it the very best Cotton
Screw we have ever known. So highly do wo esteem it,
Hint if practicable to obtain one of them, we would have
other. It Is easily built, simple In Its construction,
t liable to gut out of order, packs well, with great
power nnd with great facility.
