I have foil my »nl thrill on abright summer day,
AS I languidly Boated down Naplea r IMr bay.
But to sen Nature perfect tu every degree,
From the alio of a calf to the turu of a knee,
And observe In detail how the body la built,
. Let a damsel pass by with a swing of tho tilt.
These tllt-awny hoopa are so large and so light,
Revel such queer dry goods, unco hid from the sight.
Yon can read tho inUlals marked on them quite plain,
From which men (If they’re mortal) will scarcely relTalu.
It makes no great difference 'bout culture or mind.
While a crowd of young fellows are always behind;
Perhaps she’s a flirt, or perchance she's a jilt.
She sola them all craiy by ewlnglug her tilt.
Tho JhlrM«-the round onee-at least so I hear,
Aro the chief apparetue on which tilts appear.
The spurs asm—yon know vary wall what I mean—
Wear the old-fkshloned hoops and a long vriuollnc.
A small dainty boot, and a atocklng so white.
As ths UU-aicay swings make a beautiful sight:
And as Flora steps gaily o’er wator that's spill.
Expands on the view with s swing of the tilt.
For ths costume of Greece and tho toga of Home
Aro ontdooe la toto by fair onca at home;
For married mrn shiver, and single men will,
Aa damsels past by with aswlng of the tilt.

The Macon, (Miss.) Beaeon recites the follow
ing interesting story. Its incidents attest the
worth aud nobleness of a true woman’s charac
ter and Instincts;
In the Couuty Court lost week, the case of the
State against Sultana Allen, for slander, excited
a great deal of interest. - Tho defendant, Mrs.
▲lien, is an old, respectable widow lady.—
Miss Eliza McGowan, tho lady ngninst whose
character the slander was charged to have been
nttered, is a young lady of good family and un
blemished character; an orphan, residing with
her sister. Mrs. Allen's pica was, "not guilty,"
and “Justification,” Tito examination o( wit
nesses assumed the broadest latitude. Miss Mc
Gowan's conduct through liic, from childhood to
tho day of the alleged slander was made
the subject of inquiry. Nearly the entire neigh
borhood in which the two parties reside were
present as witnesses for one side or the other.—
The case, without any charges from the court,
was submitted to the jury, nnd the question of
the guilt or innocence oi’ the defendant left to
their determination. In a short time they re
turned a verdict of guilty. Five of the jury, ou
account of the age and infirm condition of Mm.
Allen, the defendant, recommended her to the
mercy of the court. After some consultation on
the beach, Judge McClellan, the Chief Justice of
the- Court, turned to the prisoner, and, in snb-
stancc, said:
“Mrs. Allen, yofi have been presented before
this court on a charge of slander, of wilfully tra
ducing the character ol an innocent, defenseless
young lady of your neighborhood.
"In determining the punishment to be in
flicted, the court has taken into consideration
your sex, your age, and the recommendation ot
a portion of the jury who sat upon your case,
and we have, in consequence of these tilings,
made your punishment much lighter tliun under
different circumstances your crime deserves.—
The sentence of the court is that you be fined iu
the sum of five hundred dollars, aud be impris
oned in the couuty jail for the tern of six
months.”
When this sentence was pronounced, Miss Mc
Gowan burst into tears. Site asked her counsel
if it was necessary for the complete vindication
of her character, that Mrs. Allen should lie really
and actually imprisoned in the county Jail, and
when informed that the verdict of tho jury was
a full and complete vindication of her character,
she desired the court to remit the punishment.—
She said she hud no vindictive leeliugs against
her criminal accuser; that having no other pro-
tector she had appealed to this court, nnd that TenYear,Non-Forfdtiire,EndowmentMLife
now by ita judgment site wns fully protected from ,
all farther calumny, slio prayed tho court, through
her counsel, to have mercy upon the unfortunate
being who had just been sentenced. When Miss ,
McGowan's request was made known 'to the lM „ « c . rt „ y t j, i „ e Ire m p a n
court, there was a .stillness, a solemnity, !! depth j
of feeling seldom, it ever, witnessed in' a court.of
Justice. Tho court, the bar, tho audience were N0 EXTRA CHARGE FOE SOUTHERN REBIDNCE
moved to silence, and not a lew to teats. For
some moments the stillness of death pervaded
the assembled. The judges were moved by the
petition ot the young Indy, and the tine and im
prisonment were remitted.
