wHSlS evidence in tho case did
not mtaSh that fact, but on the contrary it np-
, ww g that tho mother waa endeavoring to stop

mutably he released wilhout trial.
The ueM case investigated was The State is.

Such was about the amount ol business trans
acted by the court yesterday.
Snlo of Kent It stale.
There was a sale of more than a dozen vacant
lots about one mile from the car shed, on tho
Western & Atlantic Railroad, yesterday morn
ing and the eagerness with which they wero
purchased, at almost fabulous figures, furnishes
'mother convincing proot ol the rapid growth ol
this city. The lots were entirely unimproved,
and by no means well located, yet they found
ready purchasers when tlmt inimitable auctioneer,
Col. Adair, lifted his IxM and cried “going.”—
Several lots on the left ol tho railroad, about one-
half acre in size, brought Irotn $'150 to $H7o,
a part cash down, and the balance in easj
payments. On the right ol the railroad,
and fronting on Marietta street, about niuc or
ten ill-shapen spots of ground were readily
knocked oft' at their full valuation. Our col
umns from dav to day have exhibited tho
immense traffic going on in real estate, hut one
must attend the auctions to see the eagerness
with which such property is sought after by par
ties desiring to improve. Tho occasion above re-
(erred to was rather agreeably diversified by
creature comforts in the shape o( cooling tilings,
among which a certain Teutonic beverage was
prominent. Colonel Adair presides witli ease and
eloquence on such occasions, and so manages to
expatiate on the rare merits of what lie lms to
sell, that when lie pronounces it “gone,” the
owner may rest assured that the very "bottom
dollar" lias been extorted from the bidders.

1. Itr SiMPi.iniTY.—tt io ft now and improved applica
tion of tho Bckbw Jimt an nlmple In Ita comttruc-
tion ns the old-faehloned wooden scruw, as easily man'
aged, and no more liable to get out of order.. No ropes
or pulltas nrd used in tbn Cotton Presses. 1
2. Its Kcowomt.—It has been demonstrated by actual
experiment to be cheaper than the wooden screw. The
timbers used in its construction are much smaller and
fewer thun those employed in the old screw; the lever*
being only 1fi feet long, and thu bight of the whole frame
above the bed being only 10 feet. All these timbers
he procured on the plantation, no matter how exhan
thu forest. Any ordinary wood workman can build
frame, and halLa-dpzen hands will put. it up in a few
hours.
3. Its DunABiMTT.—The Screw and Nut are of Iron,
and will last for years wilhout any appreciable wear. The
whole machine occupies so little space that it cap be com
pletely covered nt very small cost.
4.1?» Power.—With a lover only 16 feet long, one
mhlc is sufficient for pacKlug the heaviest bales. Plan
ters who have used it say that with two mules cotton may
he compressed on this tftnehine lor shipment.
This Screw was invented Just bofore the opening of the
war, and has subsequently never been generally intro
dneed. Those who have used It and seen it used, nnnnl
mously concur in the opinion that it is
Unrivalled as a Cotton Screw!
The following testimonials, from some of the best and
most reputable planters In the country, show the estimate
In which this Bcrcw stands with those who have tried ft:
Wo have used and seen In operation for the last five
years, “Wright’s Improved Cotton Iron Screw,” and feel
no hesitation in pronouncing it the very beat Cotton

that if practicable to obtain one of iflicm. we would have
