rible mien—ritckcmlntc Detail* and Heir-
Torture.
Mqjor-Gcucml Curtis writes to his wife, from
Fort Bully, tho following account Of one of tho
horrlblo demonstrations of tho Sioux Indians,
which ho witnessed recently nesr that Fort:
Fort Sully, June 8,1800.
Tho whole of tho threo thousand Sioux camp
ed about us g&vo mo early information of their
design to have their annual sun-dttnee at this time
anil place, the season of tho year, tho trees in full
leaf, having now arrived; and they wish mo to
inform Col. Rocor, tho commander of tho soldiers,
that however boisterous their demonstration
might bo, they would all bo peaceable and of a
pious character. On yesterday, Juno 1, the
dancing was delayed at intervals to allow tor
tures to bo Inflicted. Two or three men stood
over the devotee with needle and knife, very
quietly performing penance according to the
customs of all these saeredotat rites, as follows:
First, they cut tho arms In several places by
striking an awl in the skin, raising it and cutting
out about half au Inch. This is doue on both
arms, and sometimes on the breast and back.—
Then wooden senions (sticks about the thickness
ot a common lead pencil) are inserted through a
hole in the skin ana flesh. Then cords of ropes
are attached to these sticks by one end, and the
pole at the other end, the victims pulling on the
ropes till die seaton sticks tear out the flesh and
skin. I saw one with two seatons attached to his
breast, palling till It seemed to draw the sldn
out three inches, and finally requiring nearly all
his might to tear out the seaton. One, painted
black, had four ropes attached at once. Tho
pulling out is dono in the dance, the pulling car
ried on in the time of the music, by jerk, Jerk,
jerk, and the eye, bead and front all facing the
sun in the form of supplication. Ono baa four
Seatons attached to four dry buffelo head bones.
These wore all strung and suspended to his flesh
by ropes that raised each head some three feet oil
the ground. He danced hard to tear them out,
but they would not break the skin. One came
ofl tho stick accidentally, but it was again fast
ened. Finally these heavy weights (each at least
twenty-five poundB weight), not tearing out by
their own weight or motion, the devotee gave a
comrade a horse to take hold of (he rope and tear
out the seatons. While these men were being
thus tortured, their female relations came in and
had pieces cat out of their arms, to show their
appreciation and valor and devotion to tbeir
kinsmen. Still, as soon as the victlm could be
prepared, the music was renewed and the dismal
donee went on; the victims’ bodies now mingled
with blood, paint and seatons. There being
several steamboats and many soldiers here, a
grate crowd of spectators rather embarrassed the
performers, so they concluded the performance
at 18 o’clock; having only danced twenty-four
hours instead of forty-eight, as thoy usually do.
All the devotees gave away all their ponies and
other valuables to their friends, had their wounds
carefully dressed by attendant medicine-men,
and sat down to an abundant feast of dog soup
and buffalo meat.
So ended this most barbarous and painful ex
hibition of savage idolatry. The picture is still
deeply impressed on my senses, but I cannot give
half the horror of the scene, either by pen or
pencil.
Admission of an Amrican to tub Eno-
usr Bar.—It has already been mentioned that
the Hon. Judah P. Beniamin, who was late
Confederate Secretary of State, hod been ad
mitted to the English bar as a “barrister.” Mr.
Beqjamln was for many years a lawyer at New
Orleans,'with an extensive practice In the United
States Supreme Court. The Picayune, speokiug
ol a letter recleved from him by bis relatives in
New Orleans, remarks:
He was called to tho bar by the benchers of
Lincoln’s Inn, London, and os a special favor,
dispensed from the several long terms of reading
ana study which are prescribed, and witti very
rare expections. demanded of all candidates for
. the wig and gown under the ancient rules of the
’ courts of Great Britain. Mr. Bunjamin’s posi
tion at the bar is that of a barrister. His duties
relate only to conduct anil argument of suits
which are placed in the lrands of nttorneys. He
only knows such clients as uro brought to him
by attorneys. He can receive no business di
rectly firom suitors or claimants, but it must ail
como to him through attorneys. He can not
even hold an interview with clients except in
the presence of the attorneys. The latter get
up the coses, make up the briefs aud prepare
tbe testimony, and then band Uio brief over to
the barrastor whom they may select, accompa
nying the same always with a suitable retainer.
All that the barrister can do when applcd to
directly by parties having suits, is to refer them
to an attorney.

H. T. Helmbold, Druggist.
Dear Sir: I have been a sntfcrcr. tor upwards of twenty
years, with gravel, bladder and kidney atfections, during
which tlmo t have used various medical preparations, and
been under the treatment of the most eminent physicians,
experiencing bnt little relief.
Having scon your preparations extensively advertised,
I consulted iwlth my family pyyslclan In regard to using
yonr Extract Bnchti.
I did this because I had used all kinds of advertised
remedies, and had found them worthless, and somcqulto
Injurious; In fact, 1 despaired of ever getting well, and
determined to use no remedies hereafter unless I knew
of the Ingredients. It was this that prompted me to use
your remedy. As yon advertised that It was composed
of buehu, eubebt and Juniper berriee. It occurred to me nnd
my physician as an excellent combination, anil, with his
advice, after an examination of the article, and consult
ing again with tho druggist, I concluded to try It. I com
menced Its use about eight months ago, at which time 1
was confined to my room. From the flrst bottle I waa as
tonished and gmtffled nt the bcncflclal ctfcct, and after
using It three weeks was able to walk out. I felt much
like writing you a toll statement or my case at that time,
but thought my Improvement might only lie temporary,
and therefore concluded tn defer and see If It would effect
a pcrfoct cure, knowing then It would be of greater value
to yon and more satisfactory to me.
I am now able to report that a cure Is iffccled after
nslng the remedy for nve months. I have not used any
now for threo months, and feel aa well In all respects as I
ever did.
Your Bnchu being devoid of any unpleasant taste and
odor, a nice tonic and Invlgomtor of the system, 1 do not
mean to bo without it whenever occasion may require Its
use In such affections.
