To Chamber of Commerce, Louisville, Ky.:
Gentlemen : Thu umleraigncd have Been ap
pointed a committee by tho Atlanta, Board of
Trado to correspond with your body, in refer
ence to securing, it possible, lowor through rales
lor freight between Atlanta and Louisville, there
by benefitting your city and tho railways lending
from it in this direction.
Tho great chuupuess of ,wator carriage conso
tjuent upon vessels coming South from the Mid-
lo Atlantic ports for cotton, on the carrying of
tchic/t they mainly rely for their profits, Is having
tho effect of turning muoli Western produce
through Hint dhnmiei, the purchasing market for
which must bo North of Louisville. Hence, in
this matter, the Interests of Louisville and At
lanta arc Identical. Wo would respectfully
suggest and request that you use your Influence
with the Louisville & Nnshvillo and Nashville &
Chattanooga Bail ways, while we do the same
with our State Roil'd, to attain the desired object.
Hoping to have a favorable response soon, we
remain, with much respect, your obedient ser
vants, C. C. Hammock,

To Louisville Hoard of Traile :
Gentlemen : Your committee appointed to

through rates of freight between tills city and
Atlanta, iu response to a communication from

Ignorant of, nor indiflerent to, die loss of busi
ness sustained bytlmt road from the competition
of Eastern rail and steamship Hues referred toby
the comnfittee of tho Atlanta Board of Trade.
On the 20lli of December, 1865, the Louisville
& Nashville Ituilrond Company reduced their
through turifi fully twenty per cent, below die
regular rates. Their Southern connections work
ed up to local tariff rates (or very nearly so) un
til June 12, 1800, at which time a reduced turill
was issued by them.
These reductions were so material as to iu-
ducc the hope thut all the business due these
lines from die Northwest could be retained, ntul
much disputed freight gained from points East.
It, however, transpires that this hope is not
realized, and that further reductions are required
to meet the competition.
In order to exhibit to you the relative charges
