Slmlpldty of Truth •I witnessed a abort time ago, in ono of our H h courts, a beautiful illustration of the sim jity and power of truth: A little girl nine years of ago, was offered as a witness against a prisoner who was on trial for iclony committed in her father’s house. ‘•Now, Emily,” said the counsel 4br the pria- er, upon her being offered as a witness, “I desire to understand if you know tho nature of an oath ?” , "I don’t know wlmt you mean," was the sim ple answer.- Except In sin and pain. 1 jlmnrri.' This witness should bo rejected. She does not comprehend the nature of an oath." “lit us see," said the. Judge, “come here, my daughter.” Assured b; Judge, tbecl ed confidently ttpln , ,, , .. eye, and in a manner so artless and frank it went straight to her heart. Did you ever take an oath?” inquired the tho kind tone and manner of the l towards him and look- is face with a calm, clear Judge. The little girl stepped back with a look of lior ror, and the red blood mantled In ablush al over her face and neck, as she answered. “No sir.” She thought he intended to inquire If she had ever blasphemed. “I do not mean that,”- said the Judge, who- saw her mistake. “1 mean were you ever witness before ?’’ He handed her the Bible open. “Do you know that book, my daughter ?', looked at it and answered.-Ye es, sir, it is She looked at It and answered, the Bible.” “Do you ever read it ?” he asked. “Yes, sir—eveiy evening.” “Can you tell me what the Bible is ?” “It is the Word of the Great God,” she an swered. ; “Well, place your hand, upon this Bible and. listen to what I say," and he repeated slowly and solemnly the oath usually administered to witnesses. “Now,” said the Judge, “yon have been sworn as a witness—will you tell me what will you if.you do pot tell the truth ?” “I shall be shut up in the State prison ” an swered the child. s child. “Anything else! „ se?” asked the Judge. “I shall never go to Heaven.” ■ | “How do you know ?” asked the Judge again The child took the Bible, and turning rapidly •r to the chapter containing the commandments, pointed to the injunction, “Thou shalt not boar that,"sue satci, ""as any 01 being a witness “Has any one talked with you ftbciutyduif’ ft*®*mpU^ott’edatPntof in court here against this roan?” Any ftrther information will be p inquired the Judge. “Yes, sir,” she replied; “my mother heart they wanted me to be a witness, and last night she called me into her room and asked me to tell her the ten commandments,- and: then we kneeled, down together, and she prayed t r ‘ iiWli' might understand how wicked it was to father, she kissed me and told me to remember the ninth commandment, and, that, God wo]“ hear every word I said.” “Do you believe this ?” asked the Judge, with a tear glistening in his eye and his lips qui ing with emotion. “Yes, sir,” said the child, with a voice and manner that showed her conviction of tho truth, was perfect “God bless you, my child,” said the Judge, “you have a good mother. This witness is com petent,” he continued. "Wore I on trial for my Leave ct lifo, 1 and innocent of the charges against me, I, Arrivoat would" pray God for such a witness ad this. Let her be examined." She told her story with the simplicity of child as she was, but there was a directness about it which carried conviction of its truth to every heart. She wad rigidly cross-examined. The counsel plied her with infinite and ingenious questioning, but she varied from her first state ment in nothing. The truth as spoken by that child was sublime. Falsehood and perjury had preceded her testimony. The prisoner had en trenched himself in libs, until he deemed him self impregnable. Witnesses had falsified iacts in his favor, and villainy had manufactured a sham defenso,'but'before her testimony falsehood was scattered like chaff. The little child,/or whom a mother had prayed for strength to be given her to speak the truth as it was before God, broke the cunning devices of matured, vil lainy in pieces- like n potter’s vessel. The strength that the mother had prayed for was given her, the sublime and terrible simplicity (terrible, I mean, to the prisoner and his perjued associates) with which she spoke was like revelation from God himself.
