The Savannah Near <ft Herald, of tho 31st, 1ms
tlii'se additional |iarticuhirs of the renewal of the
disturbances on the Delta plantations:
Tho community were startled yesterday morn
ing with u sensational report that the disturbances
at the Delta plantation had been renewed, and
that there had boon a battle between tlie Federal
soldiers stationed there and tlie negroes. It up
pears that a bout Containing a couple of gentle
men with a detail of soldiers, had attempted to
land on Tuesday night and were compelled by
Hie negroes to return to Savannah. At an cnrly
hour they reported at tho Headquarters of Col.
Si dey, and nskod lor a detachment of soldiers.
I lie Colonel with fifty men proceeded on the
steamer 0. E. Potter, about hall-past one o’clock
nnd from what wo could learn from gentlemen
who accompanied the boat, they met but very
few negroes on the place. There were several
small Isiats, nil of which were taken in charge by
theofllcers, nnd alter removing the oars they
were placed uuder a gunrd.
It was found that Lieut. Lemon, lute of tho
rreedmen’s Bureau, had been dragged out ot
[ns quarters yesterday morning nnd severely
beaten with a musket by one of tho freedmen
who afterwards tired at the prostrate olllcer, the
ball taking cflect in the shoulder. Lieut. Lemon
jetting possession of bis pistol tired two shots at
ns assailants, the last ot which took effect, kill-
• the negro.
lie Surgeon of the 10th United States ininn-
try was sent over to attend to Hie wounds of
Lieut. Lemon, and we learn that, although they
are very severe nnd painful, they are not con
sidered dangerous.
Ail inquest was held on the body of the negro

The Great Tobacco Factory of Spain.—
A sojourner at Seville writes:
The change from the fairy scene in and around
the Alcazar to the tobacco factory, is like nothing
on this planet. Put your hand into a pitcher ol
hot water and quickly plunge it into another of
cold, and the change will not he a whit more
strange than to pass from the beautiful Alcazar
to the presence of five thousand young girls all
m oue room and Sevillanas, too, iu the factory
I hey are all old enough to be mischievous and
pul on aim.” I doubt if as many black eyes
can be secu in auy one place as in this factory.
heir fingers move rapidly urnl their tongues a
mile taster. Both consume ten thousand pounds
of tobacco a day, but you must not suppose that
they use tobacco in any shape; no, but they
must talk, aud talk they do with a rapidity that
is ama’/.itig, 1 1
I have often heard that a woman’s weapon
is her tongue, and that the sex were notorious
for using it, but, like many oilier unkind state
ments against heaven’s best, last gilt to man, I
doubted it until I peeped into the Fabrico deTo-
bacos of Seville. TVliat may be the weight of
mischief 'manufactured each day nlong with the
cigare, 1 don’t know, but I feel safo in stating
that it is at least equal with the tobacco. The
factory was erected in 1750; is COO feet long by
63o wide, and is surrounded by a moat It is
the principal factory in the kingdom, ns every
one uses tobacco in some shape iu Andalusia
uot excepting tlie holies, but it is when they are
oil the shady side of forty that they puff ami
cogitate. Suuff, cigars and cigarettes arc all
manufactured here. The best workers amoug
tlie girls earn about tbrtv ceuts per day the
poorest about half that amount. Every night
they aro searched.

Help for the Greeks Abroad.
Butler, Wendell Phillips, Banks, ami the rest
>f tbo fanatical crew, ail valiant champions of
recdom and free governments, bnvc put their
boulders to the wheel for the good of Greece,
tnd, according to one of our New York ex-
ibanges, tbo contributions promise to be exquis-
tely characteristic:
General Butler, lor example, blubbering at the
accounts ot the cruel behavior of a Pacha in
Candia, runs up to the platform from which Mr.
Phillips is setting forth the dozen albatu spoons
taken by him as being pure silver from an obsti
■lately rebellious old lady’s cupboard in New Or
leans. General Bank, scandalized at the confis
cation of several drums of figs by a Turkish Ad
miral, oilers two bushels ot damaged Bed river
cotton anil a bottle ot Portland elixir. Ex-Col-
lector Goodrich, of Boston and Berkshire, sends
a package of counterfeit currency put off upon
hint in liquidation oi fines from a corrupt im
porter who 1ms subsequently migrated to Austra
lia. An eminent Unitarian clergyman, who gave
his son to liia country u simple second lieutenant,
and got him back again a full major-general,
hands over to tlie valiant defenders of Arkadi a
set of coral children’s bells and a damaged piano
obtained in the nursery of a malignant Carolini
an aristocrat. We hope that tlie good work may
go bravely on. And when all that can be collect
ed lias been collected, we devoutly trust that Mr.
Wendell Phillips, General Butler, General Banks,
aud Charles Suinner may be appointed a commit
tee to take the New England contributions out to
Candia, with instructions to remain in tlie East
until they shall have reconstructed not Crete
alone, but all Hellas and Asia Minor, together
with Mesopotamia and Syria, into the exact like
ness of the ancient and fish-like Commonwealth
of Massachusetts.
President Davis.—Tito Springfield Iicpub-
t ,c " n has tlie following sensible remarks on
Jefferson Davis’ condition ;
Mr. Greeley is reported to have used his iulltt-
cncc with the President, while nt Washington
last week, m connection with Charles O’Couor
and Mr. Shea, counsel of Mr. Davis, to procure
«S. r £lSSLS£ U'2. .'.W&H& lirMjvifc'Vr.ii’MU', lie
released, on bail or parole. Mr. Greeley will be
blamed by some of bis friends for ids persistent
efforts to obtain tlie release of Davis, but they
are creditable both to his head and heart. The
President, with all his obstinacy in some things,
lms shown great want of courage in this. Tlie
detention of an alleged criminal without trial
lor more than a year and a half, is in violation
ol the spirit of the Constitution aud the general
sense ol justice, and in this case the hardship is
aggravated by the nature of tlie crime for which
Davis was arrested—that of complicity in tlie
assassination of President Lincoln. Guilty, as
lie is, of conspiracy against tlie nation’s life, that
furnishes nu excuse lor holding him under ac
cusation of a more cowardly and monstrous
crime, without trial and without apparent evi
dence. If President Johnson had been botli
just aud brave, he would have released him on
parole long ago.
Florida Items.—The Ocala Banner contains
the following:
Within the pust ten days several shooting of
frays imve occured in this and the adjoining
county ot Alachua. This would seem to pre
sage a bad state ot society, but we hope such
is the reverse, and Hint these arc only aggravated
eases.
In the Neighborhood ol Waealiootcc, one Mr.
Snowden was seriously wounded, some days
since, by a man known in that section us Yankee
Lee.
At Mlcnoopy, one night last week, Mr. Albert
Dunton was way-laid and shot by a negro, while
going from the stable to bis house. The wound,
we learn, was not a serious one. The negro was
discovered, arrested, and safely confined in Ala
chua jail
On Friday night last, at the residence of Mr.
Zeigler, some ten miles above this place, a dilli-
culiy occurred between the Messrs. Dupree’s and
a clerk of Colonel S. II. Owens, in which the
Dupree's were both wounded—one in tho ab.lo
men, and Hie oilier in tho i:u:e just below tlie
right eye.
Tnr. War not Over.—Tlie Washington cor
respondent of tlie Charleston Courier writes:
It is reported that Secretary Stanton lately de
clared to .Mr. John Covode, of Pennsylvania, tlmt
tlie country, after all its tremendous efforts and
sacrifices for selt-prcservation, was, in his judg
ment, now shadowed witli a darker gloom than
at any crisis of the late war. It is in the sense
oi this remark, probably, that tlie President said
to a Senator lately that Mr. Stanton did not be
lieve tlie war to be over.
The same writer adds in another part of bis
letter:

A Comparison.—At the beginning of the year
they counted tlie number of officials employed
in the several Government departments at Paris,
and the aggregate is astonishingly small, consid
ering the wide extent of their duties aud the
multiplicity of Imperial supervision over the
every-day affairs of the people. Tlie whole num
ber is only 3,150, divided as follows: Ministry oi
State, 17; of justice and public worship, 104;
foreign affairs, 101; interior, 410; finances, 1,307;
