Thkre Is do mr.n moro Imlcpomlout thiui tho
owner of a well cultivated farm. Ho is less be
holding to popular sentiment than people of any
other calling. Ho has always a sure support be
fore him, without consulting the opinions or re
lying upon the custom of any one. There la a
constant market for all the surplus ho can pro
duce, and he obtains for it the current price
without any one demanding to know of him his
religious or political faith.
Sidney Smith, In one of his productions,
says: “ If you can throw now light upon moral
truth, or, by any exertions, multiply the comforts
or confirm the happiness of mankind, this fame
;uides you to the true ends of your nuturo; but,
In tho name of heaven, as you tremble at retri
butive justice, and in tho name of mankind, if
mankind bo dear to you, seek not that easy and
accursed fame which is gathered in tho work of
revolutions; and deem it bettor to be forever un
known, than to found a momentary name upon
the basis of anarchy and religion.”
Slkepino in church is a serious crimo in
Rhode Island. Bunday afternoon a week ago,
a poor Irishman went into one of the churches
in Providence, was shown into a seat, took a
quiet nap during the services, and was peaceably
retiring at their close, when he was arrested,
tried, and sent to Jail for ten days.
A Chicago reporter, describing a masked ball,
remarks: “If there are prettier women than
blondes, they nro brunettes. Cleopatra was a
brunette, Beatrice was a brunette, Rachel was a
brunette, and so is Miss B. If one wants a flirt,
take a brunette; if one wants a cook, tako a
blonde. She has no inspirations, but sho is re-
Tr «n« wants a wife, tako neither.”
“ Every one seems to love :j . S cu-
leman to a Utile girl. " Do they ?" sho replied,
miiing- “ Well, I guess it’s bccaue I lovo them
11." Oh! never did philosophy, seeking for
eeply hidden gems of wisdom, strike upon a
ruth more rare and pure; for a loving and
indly nature, like sweet music, awakens kin-
red echoes. There is no harshness that love
annot soften, no anger that a gentle word will
iot disarm.
Bad luck is simply a man with his hands in
is pockets and his pipe in his mouth, looking
on to see bow it will come out. Good luck is a
inn of plnck, with bis sleeves rolled up and
orking to make it come out right.
Tuny hurry up matters in Chicago. Tho Tri-
nine tells of n divorce decree that W88 entered
n one of the courts of that place, within less
laa three hours from tho service of tho sum-
ons on the defendant.
Bomb one computes, wo do not know how eer
ily, that at this moment tho indebtedness of
utheru traders to Northern merchants amounts
the sum of 1315,000,000, $131,000,000 be-
nging to the city of New York alone.
It seems there is to be a new kingdom to tho
irth of ub. Tlio new Canadian Confederation
to be officially known as tho "Kingdom of
nada,” but tho ruler is to hear his old title of
ivercor General, with double the salary of a
lident of the United States. Is not this in
uring of a new kingdom a breach of the Mon-
Doctrine ?

culation among tho negroes in this community,
and who are Irantic with joy over what they
call “do new rebelation from do sky:"
A COPY OP A LETTER FROM JESUS CHRIST,
And found olghtccn miles from Iconimn, sixty-
five years after the crucifixion of our blessed
Savior, transmitted from tho Holy City by a
converted Jew; faithfully translated from tho
Hebrew copy, now in possession of tho lady
Cuby’s family, at Mesopotamia. The letter was
written by Jesus Christ, and found under a groat
stone, both round and largo, at the loot of the
Cross, eighteen miles from Iconium, near a vil
lage called Mesopotamia. Upon that stone wns
engraved, “Blossed is he that shall turn me over.”
All poopie that saw it prayed to God earnestly,
und desired that ho would make known to them
the meaning of this writing, that they might not
attempt in vain to turn it over. In tho mean
time, there came a little child about six or seveu
years old, and turned It over without holp, to tho
admiration of all the people that stood by, and
under this stone was found a letter written by
Jesus Christ, which wns carried to tho city of
Iconium, and there published by a person be
longing to lady Cuby, and on tho letter was
writtou tho commandments of Jesus Christ,
signed by tho angel Gabriel, twenty-eight yeurs
after our Savior’s birth.
A LETTER OP JESUS CHRIST.
Whosoever worketh on tho Sabbath day shall
be cursed: I command you to go to church, and
keep tho Lord’s day holy, without doing any
manner of work. You shall not idly misspend
your time in bedecking yourselves "with super
fluities of costly apparel, and in dresses, for I
have ordained it a day of rest—I will have it
kept holy, that your sins may be forgiven you.
You shall not break my commandments, but ob
serve and keep them, written with my own hand;
writo them in your hearts, and steadfastly ob

words and learn my commandments; you strait
finish your labor every Saturday afternoon by
six of the clock, at which hour the preparation
of tho Sabbath begins. I advise you to fast five
Fridays in every year, beginning with Good Fri
day, and to continue the four Fridays immedi
ately following, in remeinbranco of tho five
bloody wounds I received for all mankind. You
shall diligently und peaceably labor in your re
spective vocations wherein it has pleased God to
call you. You shall love one another with bro
therly love, and cause them that are not baptized
to come to church and hear tho holy sacrament,
viz: Baptism and the Lord's Supper, and he
made members thereof; in so doing, I will give
you long life and many blessings, and comfort
you in the greatest temptations; and surely he
that doth to the contrary shall bo cursed and un
profitable. I will also send hardness of heart
upon them, till I have destroyed them, hut espe
cially upon the hardened and impenitent believ
ers. He tiiat hath given to the poor, he shall not

Remember to keep holy the Sabbatli day, tor
the seventh day I huve taken to myself, and ho
that hatli a copy of this letter, written with my
own hand, ami spoken with my own mouth, and
keep it without publishing it to others, shall be
blest of me, and though his sins bo in number
as tho stars in the sky—and he thut believes in
this shall be purdoned, and if lie believes not
this writing and my commandments, I will send
my plagues upon him, und consume both him
and Ills children and his cattle. And whoever
shall have a copy of this letter written with my
own hand, and keep it in their houses, nothing
shall hurt them, neither pestilence, lightning nor
thunder shall do. them any hurt; and if a woman
be with child and in labor, and a copy of this
letter he about her, und she firmly put tier trust

a few days since, when on examining an old

ligious impulses, (being a darkey distinguished
for ids piety and intelligence among the negroes
of this community) did not wish to be the lone
custodian ot so important a trutli while his
brethren were in darkness, aud accordingly had
somethreo hundred copies printed. These have
all been sold witli tho exception of a dozen or so.
The consequences are that tills portion of negro-
dom is in a perfect ferment.*They have forgotten
what Congress is doing for them, and the in
quiries among them are where is the rock tlmt
concealed this “sacred document! 1 ” Whose
farm or soil has been made holy by its having
been found on it, aud wliat is tho name of the
little girl who turned over the rock ? Where did
she live ? These, and some other silly questions
engage the minds of the deluded race who have
seen and heard of tho publication.
This is an additional evldenco of their super
stitious predilections, and ns indicative of what
their condition will ho within the next half cen

idolatrous superstition. This clement in their
compositions has never been so strikingly ex
hibited until they ussumed their new relations to
the white race in tho South. Here is work for
philanthropic Yankee missionaries—to save their
ideal race from idolatry. M.
Negro Suffrage In tile District of Columbia.
The elections at Georgetown, District of Co
lumbia, on Monday Inst, resulted in the election
of the "Union” candidate for Mayor, Charles D.
Welch, by a majority of 05. For tho Common
Council, 7 Radicals and 4 Democrats.
According to the reports published in thu
Chronicle, there was no disorder during the day,
and tho cqlored voters behaved with great pro
priety.
The following is the account given by tho cor
respondent of tho Baltimore Gazette :
Tho “election,” ns it is called, is “progressing"
in Georgetown. The exhibition is orderly enough,
hut truly disgusting. In tho "lane" leading to the
polls, contrived so as to admit hut a single Hue
of voters, whites and blacks, in every conceiva
ble sort of attire, if, indeed, Borne of the latter
can be said to he attired at all, were indiscrimi
nately jammed into acompact string. No chal
lenges were allowed by the police, that heiug oue
of the rules of Superintendent Richards, which
I accidentally omitted in my idler of yesterday.
It will be easily seen, therefore, that the election
is a mere farce. I am told by those who take an
interest in defeating the negro candidate for
Mayor, thut gangs of blacks from the States of
Virginia and Maryland, thu City of Washing
ton and the District proper were permitted
to vote without a question, and that probubly
their ticket would bo elected. Up to three o’clock
about one hundred and fifty white men—inter
lopers—Imd voted with the negroes. If rite can
didate voted for by thu white citizeus should he
successful, it wifi he owing exclusively to tho
forbearance of the negroes themselves. It is
proper to udd that the rules under which this
inis-called election is being conducted are in all
respects justified by tho law of Congress they
were framed to carry out. The act, in effect, not
only guards the elective privilege of tho hiucks
with the tenderest solicitude, but opens wide the
door to fraud in that direction, and lenders it
positively dangerous for a white man to employ
the necossary means to exercise this right, while
it at the same time disfranchises many, upon
the subterfuge of complicity with the late Con
federacy. Apropot. this morning the Radicals in
the House snecringiy buried in one of tho com
mittees u proposition to elevate the wliito resi
dents of Washington who huve declared their
intentions to become citizens to an equality with
lliu negro in the matter of sutirage. It will be
recollected that a similar proposition was re
jected when the Negro Suffrage bill was under
discussion.
