-Yetri baa mate ailililional particulars of the re-
«r.nl and Lee aner the Surrender.
Generals Grant, Or.l and Sheridan, with three cetlt heavy fire at that place. It says ■
or four staff officers each, went up to the court , _
house, and of our staff there went three, a senior
aid, the chief of staff and the adjutant general.
The town consisted oi about five bouses, a tavern
and a court house, all on one street, and that was
boarded up at ono end to keep the cows out. On
the right hand as we went in was the principal
reside net, owned by Mr. McLean, and to his
house General Grant’was directed to meet Gene
ral Let At the fence the whole party dismount
ed, and walking over a narrow grass plat to the
house, noticed General Lee's horse nibbling
there, in charge of an orderly, who was holding
liis own as well. General Grant entered the
house with one or two of his staff, and the rest
of us sat down on the piazza and waited. Mr.
McLean was out there, too, but so much excited
by his appreciation of passing events that he did
not know where his pump was, or whether he
had any, or if not, couldn't tell us whether there
was a spring. In a moment Colonel Babcock
came out, smiling, whirled his hat around his
head once, and beckoned Generals Ord and Sher
idan to come in. They walked the floor silently
as people do who have the first peep at a baby,
and alter awhile General Lee came out and sig
naled to his orderly to bridle his horse. While
this was being done he stood on the lowest step
of the piazza (we had all risen respectfully as he
luossed down) and looking over into the raiiey
towards his army, smote his bands together seTe-
rnl times in an absent sort of way, utterly un
conscious of the people about him, and seem
ing to see nothing till bis horse was led in
'root of him. As be stood there he appeared to
» about sixty years of age, a tall, soldierly figure
pf a man, with a full giay beard, a new suit of
;rav clothes, a high, gray felt hat, with a cord,
ong buck-skin gauntlets, high riding-boots and
i beautiful sword. He was all that our fancy had
Minted him, and be had the sympathy of us all
s he rode away. Just as he gathered up his
ridle, General Grant went down the steps, and
kissing in front of his horse, touched bis bat to

As to the origin of the fire we have no further
information. We have endeavored to obtain the
amount ot loss, but as yet we can form no accu
rate estimate. The general opinion is that the
loss will amount to about $150,000.
While the fire was raging, and every effort be
ing made to arrest it, a herd of thieves were
gathered aroond. and plundered to an alarming
extent. It Is said that one merchant placed
sixteen boxes ot tobacco in the street, and On
Thursday morniug was able to find but one.—
Nearly a" whole hogshead of bacon was carried
off. It is thought by many that the stealing
amounts to half the loss of some ot the merchants.
Search warrants have been obtained, and a
thorough search is being made. Many of the
goods have been fouod, some eighteen or twenty
persons were arrested yesterday, and their trial
was closed and the oflenders released.
The fire company did noble work, and if wa- [ cotuteang.'in part, oi
ler had been more convenient, the fire might j
have been stopped before it was. Tfie whole I
block ot buildings were frame, and it is a won
der that they were able to stop it at all. The |
sufferers and the citizens generally unite in ten
dering their gratitude and thanks for thair exer
tions upon this occasion.
The negroes are entitled to the highest credit i
for the manner in which they exerted themselves.
They worked like good fellows ail the time, and ,
without their assistance the fire would not have i
been stopped where it did. For their gallant |
conduct upon (his occasion, we hope the City |
Council will purchase another engine and place ;
it under their control. We need two for the |
protection of the city.
